Valkyria Chronicles 3 [PSP] Fan Translation

I cannot figure out why this isn't working for me.

Installed windows .NET
Installed latest Java

Still nothing. Something something path not found.

Fairly certain you need software running on the PSP itself to perform the decryption.

EDIT: Or not, see post #287.

Hmm. I'm happy to have the PSP do the decryption, so long as it dumps the output to a memory stick as opposed to the USB port (I have CFW running on the thing just fine), but I suppose I'll give the other advice a shot if I can find the tools. Worst-case scenario, I do have a UMD version coming to me eventually, so I can probably just use that, as I've been able to dump UMD ISOs to the memory stick just fine.

Is there a stupid-simple guide for this whole process? I mean like "step 1: download this file, step 2: put this file into this folder, step 3: etc. etc"

I've never done anything like this before but I love this series and am more than happy to buy the game on J PSN if the process is really easy.

My friend is buying the game and I hope to be able to play it after him.

No way am I buying it myself because I don't support publisher laziness.

If only there was a way to reverse engineer this whole thing onto my Vita...

It doesn't get much simpler than the instructions here: http://vc3translationproject.wordpress.com/2013/12/25/patch-download-and-instructions/

They leave it largely up to you to figure out how to get the ISO, but they do offer links to instructions on ripping it from your UMD or converting it from the PSN store EBOOT.PUB. The only real proviso not mentioned here is that you should put everything (the VC3 ISO file you prepare and the conversion program CMD file and folder) in a directory with a short name at the root of the drive you're working on (eg: C:\vc3\ ) - that gotcha screwed me up for my first attempt. It's really very simple if you just follow it through one step at a time.

Taking a stance is one thing but you should morally follow through. Why would you still be entitled to playing the game if you admit to not be willing to purchase it? Your moral compass needs some calibration.

Why should you not be able to play a game your friend has loaned you? Since when is it a morally "grey" zone to play a borrowed game?

Goddammit. Is there any way to grab a PSN game off the memory stick WITHOUT a USB connection AND without Media Go? Media Go won't connect to the store, it just gives me a "No content was found." error and references a Flash file in the Media Go install (PSStoreUI.swf). Searching for "media go" and that file brings up only Japanese and Italian results, and not many at that. I've tried re-installing Media Go (both 1.6 and 2.6, since I have both installers) multiple times without any luck.

Christ. If I'd known it'd be this difficult, I wouldn't have bought the thing off PSN. I'm such an idiot for being so impatient...

you dont need media go to get the iso from the psn version and also im not sure how you planned on putting the iso on your pc to patch it without connecting your psp to the pc without a usb cable. the translation site gives instructions and links to all the files that you need to apply the patch. i bought the game off the jp psn store yesterday and it worked fine for me.

look in the comments section on the site if you have any trouble with incorrect file size.

How does tax and stuff work on the japanese psn? Is a 1000 yen card enough since the sale price is 980 yen? Or will I run into problems?

i believe he is talking about how playasia charges $15 for a 1000 yen psn code.

Yeah I know, I just wanna confirm that a 1000 yen card is enough.

Oh my god I can't believe I finally have this running. Had to buy VC3E2 then rip it, and patch it. Finally got it running on my Vita through TN-V7. It's amazing.

I will say the ONLY way I got the patcher to run was from a folder on the desktop. Running it from my Downloads folder or from the C: root didn't work.

Take it there isn't any better places to buy a 1000 yen card than PlayAsia? In other words, somewhere which isn't charging 150%.

I would've been happy to use the USB instructions but my PSP's USB port is busted, always has been (stupid refurbs). Also, like I said earlier, ripping UMDs onto the memory stick worked just fine, so I assumed I'd be able to do the same with a PSN download. Luckily, it does seem like the copy I download from PSN works with an EBOOT to ISO converter, so I might actually get to see this work tonight.

And yes, 1000 yen is enough. The card was $15 for me, hence my exclamation.

So after 4 hours of messing around with this, and now having to be up in 4 hours for work, I'm at my wits end. I bought the game off PSN, added CFW to my PSP and made the appropriate plugin file. There was no game.txt so I just created one and added the location they mentioned on the website.

However, I follow the steps where it says to boot up the game and then press the "note" button and it'll create the ISO for you, well I'm not getting anything after that. Is this because I'm using a mac?

I'm just thoroughly confused as to where the problem is.

Also, will I not be able to play this on my PSP once it's patched?

Ahaha, I bought Extra Edition a few weeks ago off ebay assuming someone would do a translation eventually. Had no idea one was already so far progressed. Great stuff

They weren't kidding with how rough everything is.

Text goes off their boxes, missing words, misspellings, COMMA SPLICES EVERYWHERE

That's why I'm waiting. I want to play the game, but I'm not interesting in playing an early beta version of the patch. I'll wait until it's more finalized.

I couldn't wait anymore so I'm going through with this patch. It's good enough but everyone's threshold for "good enough" is different.

The game is so serious tho. Everyone, lighten the fuck up.

Be careful what you wish for, AaaaahhaHAHHHHAhahahAHAhahahahhahaaaaaaaaqhahaaaaaaa!!!!!

Fuck you, Avan.

I managed to get a hold of a Windows PC to use this and yet I'm still having issues. I just can't get this damn ISO on my computer. Nothing at all happens when I press the Note key. All the issues mentioned at the actual website seemed to be related to after the ISO has been dumped. I wish there was a video tutorial :(

EDIT: Fixed it. SEPLUGIN needs to be in the root folder, not inside the PSP folder.

Whaddaya expect, it's a fuckin' war for survival, not one of those cutesy moe animu games with magical flying girls, life and hometown that're a dime a dozen in Japan. /s

On topic, finally got the game patched properly after doing it at the root of the drive and using a short name for the iso. Didn't take long, and it was more HDD intensive than CPU intensive, except for the first part, when PGD decryption was taking place using jpcsp.

Game is sweet, text formatting could be better but I ain't complaining, it's VC3 in ENGLISH. I've endured worse to play through obscure ass SRPGs like the Super Robot Taisen series in Japanese with a translation FAQ on the other screen.

lol whatev.

This game is mad srs. More than VC1 and hella lot more than VC2.

So far there's only one comic relief character. Out of like 15 good lawd.

SO i have the ISO...After that I attempt to input it into the windows cmd. prompt via dragging and dropping but as soon as i drop the iso the window closes on me and I have no clue if its converting the patch in the background or what....where should the patched iso appear?

If it's more VC2, I'm not sure I want to play this. How does it improve upon the series mechanically?

Off the top of my head:

  • Three characters, Kurt, Riela, and Imca now have unique special abilities that can be triggered at a cost on the battlefield. This uses up points that are separate from the main command ones, but since they're all powerful in their own ways, you're limited in terms of how often the can be used.
  • Story progression is back to a linear format a la VC1 instead of the calendar system that 2 employed.
  • Emblems or whatever you needed for unit promotions and class conversions are gone. Instead, you can change classes for all characters at any time and instead level them up just by playing through the game normally.
  • If you do change classes for the units and have them stay there long enough, I believe they'll unlock potentials that you can then apply while having them fight as other classes, essentially carrying over the perks of other class types to an extent and letting you override certain weaknesses.
  • Branching mission objectives and story sequences. Most of this is superficial until the very end, where you do have your choice of two endings, even if one of them is very clearly canonical over the other. It does mean that you can choose what sort of mission you want to engage in at different parts of the story to achieve the objective at hand. Beating the game also lets you play through any alternate paths you missed out on the first time.
  • The game does not take place in anime high school.

None of the changes have super dramatic effects on how the game plays out, but I would argue that it does arguably make 3 the most mechanically refined entry in the series, hardware limitations affecting battlefield sizes and whatnot notwithstanding. It's been a while since I've played the Japanese version outside of some light postgame stuff here and there, so I might be missing on more minor details, but those are the big ones from what I remember.

Also, to those people remarking about the tone, the game is darker than the previous two installments, but it does have a lot of lighter moments, especially if you engage in the side missions for every character. Just get to
the inevitable beach scene with Imca and Riela in bikinis
several chapters in and you'll feel like the balance has been restored.

Playing it right now. Just started the mission where I need to claim a city in 72 hours. Very fun so far. I highly recommend it - especially over VC2. Can't wait to see what comes from this all.

I'm having this same issue. There's a whole lot of path not found, then it disappears.

Borrowing is one thing, copying is another. The Vita quip makes me think he would do the latter.

Don't assume, it's not nice.

I just want a way to play this on my main handheld, there's no way I'm giving the lazy fucks over at Sega any more of my money (haven't given them a cent since Anarchy Reigns).

It's pretty long, 60-90 hours.

When you copy the patched ISO back into your PSP, where does it go? Do you replace the file that you ripped during the umd dump mode?

On most CFWs ISO go in the ISO/ folder , possibly ISO/(Game)/ if you're using one of the fancy categories plugins

OK, I got it to work. The trick was to put the Valkyria 3 ISO in the VC3 Patch folder. Then I made sure that folder was close to the root of my C drive instead of buried in a bunch of directories. Once I did the drag and drop onto patch.cmd it started processing correctly.

Okay I'm having a lot of trouble on this part:

If you have a PSN copy:
Must have umd_dump_simple.prx copied into your plugin folder ( ms0:/SEPLUGINS/) and add this line to GAME.TXT: ms0:/seplugins/umd_dump_simple.prx 1

I have the SEPLUGINS folder but there is nothing in it. There is no where to add the GAME.TXT. line.

Okay so here's what you do:

-Put the SEPLUGINS folder on the root menu, which is the very first screen it takes you to when you open up the memory card on your computer.

-If you've downloaded that plugin from the website, you need to drag the umd_dump_simple.prx into the SEPLUGINS folder.

-Make a blank text file in the SEPLUGINS folder. Name it GAME. Copy ms0:/seplugins/umd_dump_simple.prx 1 into it and save.

Thanks Cheska, that helps but I'm still having a little trouble.

Edit: Okay I have the completed 1.64 .bak file. I just need to find where to copy the completed file too.

You'll want to make sure the one you copy is the .iso file. I followed Elaugaufein's advice and created an ISO folder within the root menu and then copied the file into there.

Okay I created an ISO folder in the PSP's memory card's main menu page and inside that folder I put the completed patched .ISO file. When I boot up my PSP in the game section their are two VC3 files. The first one is in english but the game doesn't boot up and the second one is in Japanese but plays fine.

Uhg so close.

Awesome thanks worked finally! Now i have to solve the smaller file size output problem ;(

As mentioned earlier on, make sure the original ISO file to be converted has a short filename, e.g. vc3.iso and the path to the iso has no spaces, symbols or anything strange.

Best place to put it in would be something like "C:\temp\" or "C:\VC3Patch\"

I couldn't really go back to the PSP's screen after playing my Vita so much for the past month so I copied the jpn version that was on sale on my pc and then loaded up ppsspp. Rendering it at 10x and 5x the textures with AA on, it looks fantastic, rock solid 60fps as well. Hard to complain. Bless these gentlemen(and any ladies) for their work. Formatting doesn't bother me, so long as I can comprehend what everyone is saying I'm just dandy.
