Valve announces a new portable, Steam Deck

I wonder how a game like arkham knight or witcher 3 looks running on this. I wanna see graphic intensive and open world games stretch its capabilites to its limits and how long the battery will last. Also they should do alternate colors. White would look really good on this handheld, as well as light blue, lime green, and orange.

As anyone who has payed attention since the days of Gameboy knows, that the #1 most important thing for a portable is the battery life.

I watched but I didn't put that much faith on it. He said he played a couple of games, but it would be better if he showed all of them on portable so you could see how it fairs. Also it didn't look that good playing using the analog(visually unconfortable), at least thats the impression I get from the video.
Since this is all not final I hope they make those things better at least in terms of control. The idea itself is great imo and having backbuttons does really make it interesting.
He literally said it felt good in the video. and what do you mean ALL OF THEM?? every steam game what are you on about.

I think just based on the fact that you can install Windows on it........... and can be "docked" via USB-C? Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

This is like a replacement PC for work (at least for me where I'm connecting to a remote desktop as opposed to doing stuff locally).

If we can have dual-boot it would be perfect. Use it for work during the day then boot into SteamOS in the evening and play your games (on the toilet).

I can't wait to see all the Youtube videos of people running Excel on this bad boy

I see everyone spamming the fact that it can run emulators(which would be great), but do you guys ever got word if this gonna be possible? Don't you guys think this plataform could have any kind limitation or anything?

Thats the impression I get. I watched the video and from the look of him playing Portal for instance, it didn't look that great(he even tested the touch, didn't particullary impress).
And I mean all the games he tested. He only show a few of them on handheld mode, I wish he had show all he had tested. Easy on the caps lock lad.

I guess there wasn't a TV around? This picture is hilarious with the two huge fighting sticks.

Anyway, they'll get my $5 tomorrow to reserve one. I'm actually really excited about this. It certainly isn't for everyone, but man, I am going to really love this thing (unless I can't deal with the button layout).

Better than on xbox one?
Anyway competition for Nintendo is nice

Series S is looking like a smarter and smarter move by the day. Better price, better specs, though not portable.
People were seriously arguing that the XSS was going to hold back gaming! Every game MS releases will run on the Steam Deck but on the XSS there will be trouble!

Omg what are you doing step deck?

I got two ps3 matching madcatz TE1's fuck.. this is dope.. i want it even more now

1.6 TF and these cats are talking "latest AAA" games LMAO
It's more powerful than a PlayStation 4 GPU wise with obvious architectural improvements. Its CPU is much, much better than any 8th generation CPU. It's only 1200x800, it has the capability of taking advantage of VRS and AMD FSR.

It will have no issues with current generation games.

Nothing that releases on the PC has to run on this device.

On the other hand every game that releases on the Series X has to also run in some capacity on the Series S.

Nice try though.

Lol is that an ad?
Trying to beat Nintendo on their hometurf seems naive, it's good enough that they're showing what could be done and that they're stirring up some emotions among fans and get some noisy talk in the gaming community and social media. Maybe it can get Nintendo to wake up and try a bit harder with their next system.

Every real man carries their fighting stick around at all times ready to be put to good use.

Price and performance. That price is absolutely ridiculous for what you're getting in in terms of specs, and the portable nature of it doesn't make up for it imo.

Then clearly you don't value the portability aspect enough.

What's the alternative to this? The switch? An ipad?

Just noticed... 16:10 fucking aspect ratio ?! fucking what the actual fuck.
Good luck having fun with all these 16:9 only games and having to edit ini files on linux...
16:10 was always a pain in the ass. Even in 2008 when it was most popular
It night have a Taskbar or something.

Apple still uses 16:10 I think.

Those bathroom/parking lot Melty Blood tournaments are still on deck.

It's about time Nintendo gets their teeth kicked in
Well they have, several times. But they always come back, mostly because they're well aware, what the fabric of the gaming industry is made of. When you are a innovator and you are a disruptor, you're gonna get your teeth kicked in eventually. If you don't you're doing it wrong.

You talk like you didn't even watch the video, they say to treat like a portable PC you can install whatever you want on it of course it can run emulators. you're impression doesn't matter the impression of someone who has held it matters. I caps locked THREE WORDS. that is easy on the caps lock.

Portability fetches a premium, not much more to say. There's a reason a decent smartphone costs 2x a PS5.

There have recently been 3 successful crowd funding campaigns for very similar devices that are double the price of this thing.
It's not for everyone, certainly, but for the people who are interested in the niche of modern handheld PC gaming, the Steam Deck is offering far more value than anything else on the market.

If someone wants a handheld PC, what is available that offers better performance for the price? Or perhaps it's your opinion that technology hasn't advanced enough for the handheld PC market to be worthwhile yet? If that's the case then fair enough but I would be curious at how much performance you personally expect.

I told you I watched lol, dude whats wrong with you?
You sound triggered, relax a bit will yah.

When you thought PC gaming couldn't get any shittier. I'm shocked by this decision. This is going to flop harder than the Ouya.
Valve just shot themselves in the foot.
I don't know how much the rest of you know about PCMR culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in Nintendo-land where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over on Steam, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.
What this means is the PCMR public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase the Steam Deck, nor will they purchase any of Valve's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Valve has alienated an entire market with this move.
Valve, publicly apologize and cancel the Steam Deck or you can kiss your business goodbye.

It's the PC of portables.

It's funny how fast the looks grew on me especially after seeing its functionality.

There were a lot of things I would have preferred to have on Switch that I will now purchase on steam because of a device like this.

Come back when Nintendo can achieve such performance or even get the games that are supposedly going to run. Don't be a sour puss.
I dont think he brought up Nintendo though. And even if he did, this has nothing to do with Nintendo. This handheld is releasing a year into this gen and they are going to sell this as a next gen portable machine.

And at 1.6 tflops even at 800p, this thing is not going to perform the way they think. You look at just how much Series S is struggling to run games at 1080p 60 fps at 4 tflops. Plagues tale benchmarks came out today and it runs at 900p 60 fps. This 1.6 tflops GPU will only be able to run it at 560p at best. And thats a current gen game.

We have already seen Epic's UE5 target 1440p 30 fps on next gen consoles. 1/6th of that is again 560p.

Metro RT dips to 512p on the 4 tflops XSS. Are we looking at sub 360p games? Lets assume they drop the framerate to 30 fps, you are still only looking at a 500p 30 fps game.

What this thing will do is run PS4 games at base PS4 quality. Maybe even at 60 fps and 800p. But as soon as next gen starts, this thing will quickly become a 560p machine at best.

I reckon you could emulate Switch games and still get better perf on this :messenger_winking_tongue:
No need for sarcasm smilies, there are similar handhelds out since 2020 that can do so already.
Valve is just making the configuration more affordable.

Price and performance.
Portability carries a premium. Get on with it or vote with vallets(starting with the most popular mobile devices, not least). Pointing out mobile devices are lower hw/price value than stationary is 40 year old fact.
