Valve announces a new portable, Steam Deck

It's PC gaming... there are literally a shit ton of variables.

Yeah i understand, but still for latest games with big graphics, the 2 hours window is very small imo. A 4-8 hours window would have been a sweet spot. And claimed 2 hours, will it reach than even for sure? It got my interest, but a bit dissapointed seeing 2 hours.

$400 for a 1.6TF machine when I can get a PS5 for the same price.

Terrence Ross Wow GIF
Can you play your entire steam library with it in handheld mode though?

Bring along an external USB-C battery pack then?

no dlss, stupid 16:10, no oled. eeeh.
Also, knowing valve, it will be months long que... which is crazy that they cannot just mass produce them. They are a huge company
It's using AMD GPU so yeah, no DLSS. Could support FFSR though.

Man I wish they'd get a hardware designer to work for them. This looks as ugly as the Steam controller.

I don't get the appeal of portable gaming at all. Aren't most o you NOT traveling ?
Haha everything is opening back up. My office had people start traveling a few weeks ago.

I expect I'll be traveling a lot soon and this thing will be perfect for gaming at the airport. Also I can't wait to play pc games on my 75 inch tv.

portal 2 gets 4 hours, or 5-6 if you limit it to 30fps.

Just noticed... 16:10 fucking aspect ratio ?! fucking what the actual fuck.
Good luck having fun with all these 16:9 only games and having to edit ini files on linux...
16:10 was always a pain in the ass. Even in 2008 when it was most popular
This dude knows

I'll get this and it will never leave my home.

It's for chilling on the sofa next to the wife while she watches her trash TV so I don't get accused of locking myself away in my man cave/office while she's doing it.

At first I thought it was a very nice idea.
Then I realized that, just like Stadia, games have to be converted to Linux (SteamOS) in order to run.

Good luck.

EDIT: I see it natively support Proton for Windows games, so compatibility should be wider. That's better.

Nah he calls the pricepoint 'critical', and it being secondary, so they didn't set out to make a '399' machine.
They set out to make a machine that performs well first, and then because the price point being critical, they are clearly making a loss, because the price makes the most "sense" (as in selling a lot of them).
He's even talking about this about just being a test of the assumption that there is market for these devices; they expect to lose money it.
That just means they were first and foremost concerned about the experience then dealt with price constraints after. The price constraints were hard to deal with hence the "painful" descriptor. Nowhere does he hint that they are losing lot's of money only that they would like to see the PC form factor expand and that this is a first step on a long term plan. Losing tonnes of money on every unit is not a sustainable long term plan.

I wouldn't be surprised if the cheapest model was a slight loss leader, but there's no evidence of it yet.

Who's gonna be that absolute madman that gets Yuzu and BotW running on this thing day 1 just to shit on Switch fans? You know somebody is going to do it, why not be that somebody yourself?

Even if I love Steam this seems another product that will flop like the Steam Machines or the Steam Controller (I have one of this by the way).

No they don't. Proton is built in. It runs thousands of Windows games. If you don't like it, you can install Windows on it and squash compatibility issues you might run into.

This is a cheap gaming PC in a controller. A cheap gaming laptop in a new form factor. You can dock it to get the full desktop experience.

He literally says they aren't even looking at how many units or software they need to sell for the pricepoint to make sense, they are losing money bruv.
He also literally calls it a test to see if there is a market for this, so the point of this test is to get others to enter this market, use their "free steamOS" and have the users pointed to steam for purchases.

Most steam games (90%) will run perfectly fine in linux already due to Valve investment in proton.

So every Windows game on Steam runs on it?
Without the need for the developer to "convert" it?

Bo please, you know if Sony announced a PS Vita 2 with similar specs which allowed you to play your PS4 library you'd be jizzing your pants posting Khaled memes.

I'm only seeing a flop. Also the only handheld I bought was Sega Game Gear in the 1990's, I'm not a fan of handhelds.

Honestly I don't think valve care how many of these they sell, they've never really been like that with their hardware.

It's an added option for those who already own games on Steam.
