Valve announces a new portable, Steam Deck

Might be 12u compatible but think the storage size is still technically too small for direct storage. I don't think the current Microsoft store is supported in proton as well
Makes sense. Will be interesting if they've taken I/O into account.

Also for those wanting to install Windows I would think atleast the 256GB SSD version is a requirement. Windows 10 requires like 32GB of space if I'm not mistaken.

That's not something to tout as a good thing in order to excuse the piss poor resolution (if it only does 720p).
In what twilight zone universe you expect a small battery powered device to run for more than 5 minutes, if you expect it to play something Doom Eternal at mid/high settings @UHD?

C'mon bruv, your argument isn't based in reality.

I mean, okay, sure, when compared to current-gen top of the line hardware, this isn't very powerful.

But it's an open platform that can run essentially PC's entire catalog + emulators + anything else a PC can do, all in a portable form factor. It's honestly incredible. At $50 more than Switch OLED at 4x the power and 100000x the library... I'm not sure how this looks outright bad.
Yeah people seem to forget people where happy buying Witcher 3,Doom Eternal and Dragon Quest 11 on Switch if your already invested in steams library you don't have to make a choice between a switch version or your pc version if you get one of these.

So it looks like this will run Half Life Alyx.

I know a lot of you aren't really into VR, but for those of us that enjoy it, the SteamDeck makes PCVR gaming portable for the first time, and playable anywhere. This will be a big deal for the VR community. You'll be able to run PCVR games with the SteamDeck carried on you, wirelessly connected to your headset.

So... this is more appealing than a laptop because...?
And before you say "It's $400." I can actually do meaningful work on my laptop and get paid for it.

Anyway that'll be my two cents! Clearly I'm in the minority so I won't piss on yer parade! :)
A screen with a higher resolution would mean less battery life and bigger price.

its a pc, you can do the same on it, install anything you want, connect keyboard and mouse also. any usb based peripheral will work, you can even install windows if you want

It's another way to play Steam games in a handheld form factor specifically for gaming. Not sure what's confusing about this vs a laptop.

If you don't want a Switch-like setup, just use your laptop that you can also work on and get paid for. ;)

Would 40$ be a better price for you? WTF man, pay to play fucker. Lol 😂
That would be a great price tag. :P

I just don't want to drop $650.

I am totally pre-ordering this btw. I think Valve supported the Steam Controller & Link well (I've had one of each since launch with 0 issues). Never bought a steam machine since I build my own PCs but the crux of that was SteamOS, which seems to be living on well.

Luckily I live in a first world country so my employer provided me with my work laptop and mobile.

This video seems to imply they are making a pretty substantial loss on each unit, but going for it anyway:

As expected. They probably only make money with the high-tier model.
Amazing that they still go for it.

I'm a little skeptical of the OS proposition. It's a super locked down version of Arch, yet they claim you can install any PC software on it.

That being said, I'm going to try to snag a reservation.

If you have a established Steam library, the Deck makes more sense than buying a Nintendo Switch. the PC/Switch dual gamer are effectively dead with this thing coming out.

Now I need more info on ergonomics and performance, but this thing is crazy.

Word of advice if anyone is interesting in this don't buy the 64GB model until it's confirmed it can be easily upgraded to a SSD or you'll regret it. It's eMMC rather than a SSD so we're talking SD card speeds.
Oh dang, you're right, I've been shopping for a beater laptop and keep having to stop myself from a decent price because of the eMMC. I can deal with flexible specs and scaling graphics here and there to be livable, but the waiting on a slow storage drive would drain my lifeforce.

I always thought Microsoft could take the Xbox Series S (or something similar) and create a portable console to play Xbox and Gamepass games.
Valve got there first...

BTW, Half Life 3 confirmed... (just kidding)

Having your Steam library on the go is qualitatively different than buying a dedicated Steam console to put next to your other dedicated consoles and PC. On the other side, having the dedicated controls is also qualitatively different than purchasing a laptop to play your Steam library on the go (even with a controller hooked up to it). I agree that there is a sweet spot that could lead to success here.

Super interested, but also hate the button layout and the 16:10 aspect ratio. If I did go for one it'd be the middle priced on.

It would be cool to have, but I also don't use my Switch portably very often and rarely game on PC.

How is the PC/Switch dual gamer effectively dead? Is this thing going to play all the Nintendo exclusive it's as well?

I don't get that impression, just that it was difficult to keep costs down and that they don't care about making money the way a normal console manufacturer does. People are surprised at this price because every competitor is ridiculously overpriced, especially the switch.

Form factor probably more appealing to some. A laptop form factor is like being forced to play a Switch in table top mode all the time.

You can install windows on this.
Let's see:
A laptop with an XBOX controller VS a Windows Switch with separate keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
Decisions, decisions...
