Its not going compete with Nintendo or their demo at all but this is gonna make a great companion device for people into handhelds and already invested in PC gaming, hopefully it sells enough to stick around.

Just noticed... 16:10 fucking aspect ratio ?! fucking what the actual fuck.
Good luck having fun with all these 16:9 only games and having to edit ini files on linux...
16:10 was always a pain in the ass. Even in 2008 when it was most popular

So sad this won't be able to run anything properly due to being build on Linux and Proton. Will be a total shitshow once this gets into actual consmers hands. Will be nice for emulation I'm sure. But playing the latest AAA Windows only games on this? Yeah, forget it.

Agree. The Switch comparisons are normal due to the form factor, but this is not targeting the same type of gamer at all.

Word of advice if anyone is interesting in this don't buy the 64GB model until it's confirmed it can be easily upgraded to a SSD or you'll regret it. It's eMMC rather than a SSD so we're talking SD card speeds.

This apu is more than capable considering the 3400g from 2 years ago can. Also you can install windows.

This might also work for console people who don't want to deal with a desktop PC. Having the entire PC library portable is amazing + being able to install Windows on it, and with that Game Pass, Netflix etc. etc.

A portable PC, fucking brilliant. I can see it doing very well.

That's a lot of money, plus I don't need one. I'm gonna buy it!

$399 could be an impulse christmas presents :pie_roffles:

too bad valve should have use zen3 apu instead of zen2. Meh. zen3 would give a 5-30% performance uplift in games at that resolution!

I guess valve is buying the leftovers as amd transition to zen3 apu....

The button layout seems a result of cramming those touchpads on there. Not a fan of that. Somebody influential at Valve must be horny for those trackpads. However, there appears to be 4 buttons on the back that can remap the face buttons, so if those are comfortable I can live with poor face button placement.

The real question is can you install Windows? IGN claims in the article that you can. I'm going to reserve the 512GB model if possible. In reality, these things will probably be perpetually sold out. I'm still going to try!

Switch has 1tf of performance.... but a shitton of optimization.
This will be running windows games most likely emulated on linux... and I cannot get over 16:10 aspect ratio and no oled

I'm starting to get really interested in this little thingy but the analog sticks look really uncomfortable, I mean look at this:

The person playing in their ad loses the grip of the left analog stick. Or am I missing something?

I honestly don't know how they could have made this better, it has everything I've ever dreamed of in a handheld and more besides. For me it's going to be a dedicate XCOM machine for sure :D

So you would need to install Windows for Game Pass?

I wonder if this would be DirectX12U compatible? Also with the nvme ssd option would it be compatible with Direct Storage?

I think the concept is fantastic. If only PC games came compatible with Linux per default... Valve can't do shit about it.

Seems similar to the WiiU gamepad which was actually quite comfortable. Dpad and buttons I'd have to try for myself.

The Nintendo Switch is amazing for it's portability but the only time I ever played it in handheld is when I was in a situation I really never wanted to be in and that was the best resort for gaming.

99% of the time I'm playing docked, hand held sucks, and trying to play the switch from a distance also sucks. This is a fantastic Idea for somebody who likes to be portable but more or less redundant for any hardcore gamer, can only image the battery life....

Design looks horrible but sounds impressive under the hood. Need more hands on previews to know if I truly want this, having said that I feel like I need this in my life!

Now i wish i had a big Steam library and was rich because this Valve Boy is impressive 😁 💗portables

But only ever played on the big 3 consoles 🤔, the cost is high,i would never get this instead of a Nintendo, but may be an option instead of PlayStation one day depending on how it evolves.

1,6-2 TFLOPS is fine for 800p, I agree. At least for a while. Yes, you should be able to install Windows on this thing. But the two of us know exactly what kind of user experience that'd be, right?
You need to remember this is a pc, so yeah next gen games wont run at 4k, but pc has no generation. You'll be able to emulate super mario galaxy at 1440p/4k and you'll be able to play games from a few years at full hd and you'll be able to run older games at 4k etc etc.

Looks very interesting.

it seems valve have done a lot of work on steam os and its desktop mode which looks much prettier than in the past, proton experimental builds on steam (win to linux translation system) are super impressive.
