Valve delays Steam Controller to 2015

It is actually getting a bit embarrassing how Valve can have so much money yet be so bad at meeting their deadlines.
 
True. Not sure if the machines will be more meaningful later down the line when pricing of components has changed, but to me it would have seemed crucial that they get them out as early as possible to demonstrate how viable they are and start building support for the OS. The controller only makes sense if it actually works for older games and is supported natively for future titles, but that still remains to be seen and is probably the biggest point of contention. If they fuck up the first version the whole thing sinks in the living room context.

My opinion would be to have the OS worked out first and to get people to really put it though it's paces and push for adoption that way. Gabe Newell has made the suggestion that they think people will move their laptops and desktops to it as they continue on the OS plans, which would then mean that the advertised "living room OS" angle is wrong anyway. Either way adoption of the OS on desktops and laptops has lots of issues making that tricky in itself
Yeah, I certainly agree with needing the controller to be right out the gate. I think the whole project is either two years late, or four years early.

If the point is to disrupt the consoles, you have to strike when the consoles are at their all time low. "You could wait two years for a PS5, or you could upgrade right now to a SteamMachine that blows PS4 away for $300!", that kind of thing.

Gabe, like absolutely everyone, was under the impression Apple's TV refresh with gaming would have shipped by now, and he wanted to make sure they didn't create an overwhelming hold on the living room PC market. That's an important move, and he was right to put so much company focus on it, but with Apple still having not announced it (maybe this week actually), and the new consoles taking off to an insane start, the situation for the SteamMachine this generation has gone from very bright to a wikipedia footnote.

I think they either need to shelve it till the current systems are really dated, or can the project entirely. If they shelve it, next time this comes up, they'll have had a few years to push Linux development and the major support will be much stronger too.
 
Good, another year respite before a bunch of pc exclusives get crippled controls/gameplay/design trying to cater to this controller before everyone decides it's a terrible idea and ignores it.

Isnt the point that you can just build your controls around mouse keyboard and be done?

Anyways more time to bake is probably not a bad thing.
 
Who cares about the controller?

It's the planned in-overlay gamepad-to-keyboard mapping that is exciting.
 
Ok, this pretty much ensures I just get a PS4. I was holding off to see the Steam Machines with controllers.
 
I don't like that button placement on the front. I think they should have took a page from Sony. Trackpads at the bottom, buttons above them. Maybe add a touchpad in the middle also.

Wouldn't the steam machines being delayed be much bigger news? A lot of those had pretty firm hardware specs and prices that would not be mostly meaningless. Even if they launched, not automatically having the controller would make any existing announced models possibly obsolete for their original advertised purpose.
 
Oh.

The controller has been near the top of my most wanted list for some time, it's a little disappointing to be honest. There is now also a nagging doubt creeping in that this will never see a public release.

Sure. I mean, unless you want to actually use it as a goddamn d-pad.

I guess there aren't like four-hundred thousand 2D platformers on Steam though, so no harm done I suppose.
 
Controller never impressed me too much anyway, so hope this extra time goes into really making it a better controller for any and all types of games. A friend of mine who has laid hands on it say's it for him won't replace a traditional gamepad anyway. "Not enough tactical feedback".

Anyhow, sticking to my Genuine Saturn USB controller and Pink Scuff Hybrid controller for PC games. Occasionally the PS4 controller, especially once the drivers get better and/or Sony releases official ones.
 
Sincerely though, this news pisses me off way more than it should...
I know Valve time yadda yadda and all that but ffs is there something that this company can make into established deadlines?
Why even present a product when it is so far away to completion?
This is one major downside of a private owned company, they can pretty much do whatever the hell they want and no one will ever tell them anything.

Seriously fuck Valve... i was hyped for Steam Machines but now.
 
Valve time predates Generation 8. Hell it predates Generation 7.

The only company near enough in tardiness to compete with Valve is Blizzard (Soon™)

It's the structure of the company in my opinion, though I could be wrong. They should rethink it a bit so things are a little more organized (dedicated Steam customer support section, etc).

The fact that our fellow gaffer jshackles hasn't been contacted by Valve is also ridiculous, he could really lead the charge on working with the Steam client in particular.

I'm still struggling to understand why the "Dpad" would even be relevant to any significant extent. I can't even remember the last time I used a d-pad for anything other than menu navigation.

I would be far more concerned about how well those touchpads actually work, generally speaking.
 
That's unfortunate; I've been wanting to get my hands on one ever since the announcement. I wonder if it was due to the largely negative impressions from a while back.
