Valve Gives Diretide

Tomat

Wanna hear a good joke? Waste your time helping me! LOL!
For those who are just joining the Diretide Drama see here:
"Dota community going nuts over lack of Diretide" thread

All right, tl;dr edition:

For Halloween last year, Valve had a themed update which unlocked a new mode, Diretide. It was all about getting sweets. It was fun. It was then switched off.

As Team Fortress has taught Valve fans, themed events such as Diretide and the Greviling (which happened last Christmas) would be an annual tradition.

October 2013. Not even a peep of Diretide from Valve. So the community threw a wobbler that would get the disapproval of most two year olds. Included is a campaign against Volvo on Reddit for some incredibly dumb reason that probably involving large number of people getting their brains into gear and instead Zerg Rushing into an e-mail campaign.

That's pretty much the long and the short of it, although more details of said wobbler can be found in the thread linked in the OP.

༼ ᕤ◕◡◕ ༽ᕤ Valve Gives Diretide

This is huge news that I figured all of Gaming would be interested in.
Whenever we make a significant mistake, we spend a bunch of time looking at what happened, why it happened, and how we can fix it. Most of the time we do this privately, but in our recent mistake around Diretide, we felt sharing our analysis with you made sense.

First, what happened – we didn’t ship a Diretide event this year, and you were rightly upset about it. That was clearly a mistake, and then we compounded the problem by not telling you what was going on.

So, why didn’t we ship Diretide?

  • We have a huge update in the works that looked like it would be finished in time for Halloween. Stopping that update to work on Diretide seemed like something you would actually be unhappy with us for, because the update is pretty significant. More on that later.
  • Turning on last year’s Diretide event wasn’t trivial. We’d done a year of work on the game which had changed our codebase, UI, and other systems enough that we would need to do some work to resurrect it.
  • We underestimated how much you wanted Diretide.
  • We made the decision a while ago, and failed to employ our usual process of regularly asking ourselves whether we were still on the right track. There were a bunch of people on the Dota 2 team who poked at the decision to not do it as Halloween approached, but due to how busy everyone was with our next major update, no-one really took the time to step back and objectively realise we were being collectively crazy.

First, we're going to ship Diretide with the next update. The rest of the update we've been working on is in final testing, and as each of us finish up our work on it, we've been jumping over to Diretide.
...
And while we always want the community to tell us exactly how we're doing, this is probably a good time to stop cc'ing innocent car manufacturers with your messages.

Oh Valve, you've been failing to ask yourself this question for a while now.

Diretide was shit anyway - didn't understand all the fuss

Moobabe plz

As for the OP, I think all the community wanted was communication from Valve. Honestly, many of us wouldn't have given a shit if we didn't get Diretide if we would have known that they were working on a huge update (which will probably add one or hopefully multiple heroes). It's great that Valve is being open with us now by saying they're working on a large update, and it's cool that they're going to add Diretide shortly, but they could have avoided all of this if they would have mentioned this earlier.

Still, great that Valve is being humble and open even when they make mistakes. That's surely not easy for them.

What is that terrible thing in the title?

You apparently don't go to Twitch that often. Those fuckers are everywhere.

What is diretide, and what's the deal with all these new emoticons (༼ ᕤ◕◡◕ ༽ᕤ ᕤ༽ (◕◡◕)ᕤ༽ etc ) I recently started seeing them on Wednesday, now I'm noticing them everywhere. Is it the official "Give us/take away" emoticon?

This. And what's with the Volvo stuff?

And why are people spelling "doge" with an "e" when talking about call of duty?

just what the fuck is diretide

... it's a stinking tournament. Well that was very anti climatic.

Overview Diretide is an annual tournament event which takes place in the online multiplayer strategy game Defense of the Ancients 2 (DotA 2)

Valve needs a community manager badly.

Amen. I can't believe for how excellent they are in other areas that they completely failed at this one. I don't know who managed the Dota 2 Twitter during TI3, but they should put that person on community management, they did a great job.

Why did you click a thread in a language you don't understand??????????? What benefit is there to this????????? Where is the logic in this????????

Queue for your own language please.

"Valve gives ___" is pretty much click bait, loaded with the juiciest worms.

no diretide = ded gaem

Really though... the updates in the last little while have left something to be desired. It feels like forever ago that Abbadon was added.

Diretide was a supposedly annual Halloween event that didn't happen this year. The Dota 2 userbase was not happy, and started using that emote and spamming "give diretide" everywhere.

Now actually read the stuff in the OP and you'll be caught up.

I guess the big rebalance patch doesn't count for some reason?

It's a no pressure game mode that gives out lots of cosmetics.

most people consider the re-balancing separate from anything dota 2 related given that dota 2 still hasn't achieved full parity with dota 1. The balance is the balance. Hero updates are a completely separate thing

Thanks for this. I still don't get the Volvo thing but maybe that just doesn't make sense anyway.

Thanks Valve, but now I don't give a fuck about diretide.I want that major update you are preparing.

Calling Valve Volvo is a thing I guess. Eventually Volvo joined in on Twitter.
