Valve Gives Diretide

Awesome. I'm glad I'll be able to play it, and it's great to hear that they have been working on something big.

It sucks that they had the backlash they did, the lack of communication really did them no good. It's really good to see them realise their mistakes and update us fully.

The Volvo subreddit was also swarmed by Dota 2 fans. Pretty hilarious (albeit annoying if you just want to talk about Volvo's :P )

Was talking to my friends about this but I'll post it here.

I don't think anyone really wanted DT so much as they just wanted the usual big holiday content update that Valve is now synonomous with. Its great they're gonna release it as well, but if its just the same old mode its going to be completely eclipsed by whatever huge content is coming that I assume will be awesome.

All they had to do was just say "Soon guys just a little longer" and none of this would have happened.

I enjoyed it quite a bit because it gave me the chance to try out a bunch of heroes I had never played against human players and play around without worrying about screwing over the rest of my team. More fun than playing bot matches.

Hats were a nice bonus of course.
 
Fuck yes, power to the players! Diretide is back, can't flipping wait. Hopefully they catch the ball and release it Halloween for next year, but hell yeah, Diretide! All hail based Volvo overlords!

I don't really care about this game, but it seems to me like they really should have just said "guys, we don't have time to work on and ship Diretide this year" rather than just keeping quiet about it while fans were scratching their heads.
 
Funny thing is I played Diretide last year and it was pretty nifty, but if it weren't for all this drama over it not happening it probably would've come and gone with me being none the wiser this year.

Thanks for the heads-up, spammy emoticon people. I'll make sure to do some candy theft again when it comes out.

On the Bombcast they mentioned that Cyborgmatt, a prominent DotA player who has ---nothing--- to do with Valve, got dox'd and received angry phone calls at his home from people about there not being a Diretide.

Well, no... sort of maybe?

Valve is working on a big update and wanted to ship it before Halloween. It got delayed, and they didn't really have Diretide on the mind so it kind of got brushed off. Also over a year a patching, last year's mode was broken and basically has to be remade, so they couldn't just turn it back on. They decided to work on the big update, rather than Diretide, assuming the community would want the major update.

Trouble is, nobody knew this at all, so everyone just assumed Valve got lazy or something.
Ultimately I think a major issue here wasn't the lack of Diretide specifically, but the lack of communication from Valve about what they're working on. 4 months without much communication about the future of Dota is a little disappointing and not seeing much new content in all that time makes people nervous or impatient.

Had Valve just said "Hey, we're working on this update for 4 months, it's planned for Halloween, so no Diretide" and then later mentioned it was delayed, this wouldn't have even been a big deal at all, and honestly, they probably wouldn't have had to bring back Diretide this year. They kind of made their own problem there with a lack of communication.
 
Valve are so sincere. Even when they don't really have to be.

Well that's going a bit far, but I think it's fair to say that people assumed they were working on other things. ie. Left4Dead 3, Scream Fortress, whatever.

Same problem is seen with Half Life. We hear about what Valve is working on except for Half Life and the community assumes they have been forgotten about.
 
Meh. The mode sucked last year (aside from the frequent cosmetic item drops). I kind of wish Valve didn't give in to the whiny ass self entitled community, but whatever. Looking forward to their big update.

Haha wtf. People are now asking Volvo if their next car is Half Life 3, as if they have some magic power to make Valve wishes come true. The best comments are the ones sucking up to them, claiming they will be buying a Volvo car next.

This only really works if the babies and/or children are nebulously-connected agglomerations of tens or hundreds of thousands of people capable of precise motor function on the scale necessary to play complex computer games and who financially support their hypothetical parent or legal guardian.

Which is kind of an awesome mental image, actually, now that I stop and picture it for a second.

Yay! They now had to put resources on giving the Dota 2 community a shitty game mode that was never fun instead of giving us the real update earlier. Thanks, you premature ejaculations! Diretide sucks dick and they should've just upped the item drops in the real game for a week or two.
 
Man I really need to get back to my process of learning Dota 2. Already had played like 20 hours and was slowly but steadily grasping things, but then I took a break because of lack of time and that feeling of being overwhelmed by all of it set in again, and I haven't returned. :(
