Valve removes sexual games from Greenlight.

I would like for us all to grow up and be mature enough to deal with sexuality and have that be represented more in games, but how many times have we seen sexuality tastefully portrayed in videogames compared to the amount of tasteless portrayal of sexuality? I think the problem here is that we are talking about "sexual games" and not "games which contain sexuality". I'm all for the latter, but would rather shun the former.

Censorship, price walling.. greenlight is turning into such a mess. Why not just leave it to Kickstarter?

So much for community moderation.

You do realise that the devs pay for kickstarter too? In fact, they pay quite a bit more than the 100$ Steam asks.

It must be because those games just aren't good enough. Get some AAA production values in that shit and they'd be good to go, DX8-level graphics aren't sexy, DX11 is!
They're not "good enough" because they don't have the same "visibility" as AAA games, so they don't sell enough to warrant a big production in the first place.
Ever wondered why the vast majority of "porn games" comes from Japan? Because they have brick and mortar shops selling them. So there's a market.
If all the actors of a market refuse to sell a certain type of item, then this item becomes niche, and de facto quite cheap because it can't be visible enough to guarantee a return on a big investment.
My point being: saying they are right to do that because the porn games are of low-quality is kinda stupid, because it works just the other way around.

As for the main topic of the discussion, I understand Valve's decision. They don't want to bother with this, and I can easily understand why. Do I find it a shame though? Yeah, quite a lot, but it's more a society problem that Valve's fault.

Valve is doing something pretty awesome with their Greenlight program but even that is not enough to keep that trolls at bay. Now they are expected to lead the charge in a massive societal shift that extends well beyond video games.

should anyone really react to a post that tries to be insulting and is making points up?

Every independent game developer on my twitter feed is ablaze with criticisms and defenses for Greenlight. It's only been like 4 days and it's already extremely annoying.

I don't understand why Valve couldn't have put a touch more thought into this whole process. Maybe the bad press is good.

This hasn't ever been tried before. A few bumps in the road and your ready to write it off?

And... you actually expected sex games to be allowed on this service? lol

What exactly do Greenlight and Kickstarter have in common?

And community moderation of a list cluttered with trash just because anyone can apply for free would not be viable. Just look at the mess with all the mods in the workshop. It is a nightmare to try and find an interesting one.

An age check doesn't block anything. You think the kid who is buying porn off Steam is going to be honest about his age?

no,but by giving false data is committing a crime, and that means that valkve is not going to be considered responsable if he access that kind of content.

siclaimer while useless in blocking anyone, are all they need in terms of legal cover.

Were people actually expecting sex/hentai games to be allowed on steam?

It's not surprising - we have a societal problem with sex. maybe people thought Valve are somehow going to solve this problem and fix it just like they did pc gaming? Gabe, help us out here

It doesn't matter in terms of PR. You just need Fox news getting hold of that story, and it's over.

Yeah, it's a bit weird that they released it so quickly and changed everything 2 days later. I guess they had no idea how it would turn out.

Uh, yeah actually I did. Gabe once said he wants every game to be on Steam. PC is the one place you can go to get that kind of content when other platforms have a family friendly mandate by virtue of being attached to the television.

We need to grow up if game is to progress as a medium.

um no, what's it to stop someone from lobbying against valve on their lack of age check and handling of the situation why do you think other major DD stores like PSN, XBLA iOS and WiiWare have the same principles?

I don't think it really concerns a child breaking a law about pornography.

This.

Again, if there's actually a game which portrays it in a mature and sophisticated way I'll be all for it.

Does a game like that even exist though? All 'sexual games' are just thinly veiled wank material. You really don't see the problem there? That shit doesn't 'mature the medium', it actively distills it. Please enlighten me how 'games' that have no redeeming qualities other than being cheap dirty porn will bring this medium forward.

And the 'oh AMERUICAH THIS WOULDNT OF HAPPEND IN UROPE' comments are absolutely gold. Way to go, guys.

and then we go back to one of the first question raised in this topic...valve already sells hyper violent games...and counting that no reasonable "child-protecting" measure seems to work, why is this more acceptable than children seeing sex-related stuff?why doggy-style and oral are less acceptable for children than decapitation and dismemberment?

It makes business sense why Valve wouldn't want to cross this particular line, although the posters equating any sexual content to ANAL ANIME ANGELS 18 are pretty obnoxious.

I really hope these guys are still able to make their game and do so viably elsewhere. The medium could use something fairly new and possibly strange, and hopefully help shed some of its aversion to sex.

But what irks me most is the comment about 90-95% of a game's revenue being generated by Steam. Even for off the cuff numbers, it still shows that we need more platforms that can compete with Steam. I love Steam and sunk plenty of my money into it, but it needs some serious competition.

so you define what is relevant and whats not? good for you.

so there is none, but you are only accepting sex games if they are done well?

so be it then.

If you can show me a specific game that Valve shut down due to this policy then there can be a debate.

It's up to the developers to prove everyone wrong. Make a game that is good and features sex as the main story/gameplay/whatever and make people demand that it be on Steam.

We accept violent games not because they have violence, but because they are fun. It's fun to play Gears of War, TF2, Dota 2, CoD, etc. If you can have a sexually themed game that has the same additive/fun qualities as those, then there is a war that can be fought and won. Until then this whole argument is pointless because you are asking Valve to wade through thousands of shitty sex sims because 'it's the right thing to do.'

Irrelevant. Show me a good sex game I'm missing out on because of this policy.

Irrelevant? Why do sex games have to go the extra mile to prove themselves again? AGAIN (cause i've already answered to this) the game in the OP seems decent enough to be on Steam, especially considering some the crap they've accepted.
And moreover, as long as everyone keep turning off everything centered around sex, there never will be anything with good production values.

No.
It's one thing to refuse a game based on its quality; it's another to refuse it based on its sexual themes.
Nobody is asking them to accept every crap sex game there is, just not to refuse a decent game because it features sex as its main theme.

So you don't have a specific game you can point to where I'm missing out on a good sex game.

Also, Minecraft, CounterStrike, Dota, Desert Combat, etc were games/mods made with minimal budgets. Where is this indie sex gem I'm missing out on?

so you´re really not getting it? so be thankful for daddy valve to protect you from sex games.

I think valve sums it up pretty clearly:

"Steam has never been a leading destination for erotic material. Greenlight doesn't aim to change that."

like I said before the big 3 also feel the same way as this, if people or developers really do feel that their missing out on some Hentai, then what's to stop them creating their own DD platform?

Surely this would be a better solution for all, after all this is a niche genre, just like pinball games.

? I've already said the game in the OP is decent enough.
Also you are missing the point it seems, i'm saying Valve shouldn't refuse a game based solely on explicit sexuality being the theme, what is the lack of great sex games has to do with this?

Still no game to point me to huh?
Still not getting the point huh?

Still no game to point me to huh?

so you´re thankful or what you are trying to prove? they remove sex games not because they are bad. they are removing it because they´re comfortable with violence but not with sex.

but to play in your league: show me every game with killing humans that has been removed because of shitty quality.

Still not getting the point huh?

Your opinion differs from Valve. Their company, their choice.

Because in order to break down the wall of allowing sexually explicit material, it's going to take a great game. The shitty game in the OP isn't going to cut it.

That i agree with.
I respect their position, i just don't agree with it.

Because in order to break down the wall of allowing sexually explicit material, it's going to take a great game. The shitty game in the OP isn't going to cut it.
Why is that? As i said i don't think there's anything immoral with sex, so a game that is even silly and fun about sexuality is nothing to get up in arms about or incredibly taboo (it shouldn't be, anyhow).
If we're talking about Fox News type of outrage though, great game or not they won't give a shit, they'll have their outrage.

censorship always needs their "i meant it well" defenders.

yup. and its our choice to say their choice is shitty. get used to it.

Absolutely it is but saying it isn't going to change anything. You want things to change? Put your money where your mouth is. Boycott Steam and any other company that refuses to stock porn games. Start buying porn games from places that sell them. Wank your way to freedom!
