Valve wants Dota 2 on tablets

I was considering buying a Surface Pro if it meant being able to set up anywhere for a game of Dota. Give me Dota on everything, Valve. I'll play it on my iPhone and lose a lot.

Dota2 would be fucking awful on a touch device, contrary to whatever the fuck Kotaku thinks.

And Dota 2, a game that is fast-paced, but not quite as demanding on your fingers as an eSport like StarCraft, could be a very good fit for the touch-screen interface on an iPad or Android tablet.

lol, clearly has never played Dota.

Anyway, probably wanted to get it running for spectating.

How the fuck am I gonna play Chen/Enchantres/Visage there

DOTA anywhere, anytime. Would be cool.

This info bridges to a much larger point. Where is Steam on phones and tablets? Why hasn't valve made a bigger push? Especially on Android, where it seems the platform is just waiting for someone to figure out how to sell games on it. The user base there to purchase content. Just need a better delivery method.

I think it will work well on tablet actually, considering the point and click nature of the game. Cross platform play is probably not a good idea though.

Steam is already on iOS and Android...

I think it's better to clarify that they aren't actively working on it and for the very least waiting for faster tablets.

Now all we gotta do is wait several decades until someone makes a tablet where there are intuitive inputs to still not achieve parity with console/kbm in terms of functionality and ergonomics.

I think it's good to note that it seems like Valve is simply playing with the idea of putting it on tablets. I don't think they'd seriously consider it unless they figured out a few big hurdles.

You can already connect a keyboard to an iPad, and other tablets like surface have some keyboard options. What if you had mouse support too? That would be perfect!

Like others have said, spectator client on tablets/smartphones would be fantastic

They'd have to design a completely different game to actually be playable on those interfaces though. I think there are more inherent problems in the transition to tablets than consoles for this type of game.

If this happens I imagine less people will call me a retard and I will hear more along the lines of "Are you playing on a God damn tablet?".

"We were working on getting Dota 2 running on some tablets," he said. "That ended up being kind of a disappointment. But the good news is that tablets are getting faster very quickly, so I think we'll get the kind of performance we want and other game developers want in the near future."

Sounds like the hardware wasn't there so it's not happening, maybe in the future, but he doesn't say that. I wonder how they will work this out with the micro transaction stuff and if they would be okay with paying for the in-app purchase fees. Maybe try and get around it by technically using a web based interface? Is that how they do it on the Steam app right now? Or is it because you aren't purchasing iOS games so Apple doesn't care? I suppose they could go the route of releasing a separate store app that you would "Side load" for Android like the Amazon App Store and make deals with Samsung and the like to have it pre-installed.
