Valve wants Dota 2 on tablets

Sounds interesting. I can't figure out how the controls would be, but I suppose that having different matchmaking for people playing in tablets and people playing on PC, would be essential.

Only tablet it should really be on is Surface. KB/M is absolutely vital to playing Dota 2. However, a Dota 2 spectator client for iOS/Android/Surface would work fine.

Yeah, I know there is a Steam app. But I mean a Steam market place. Moreso for Android than Iphone. Maybe Valve just doesn't think it is worth their time.

Small company, many projects and limited human resources. There are other things that they're doing right now (wearable computing, steam box, next gen engine, dissecting the digital enconomy etc... and that's on top of supporting their current releases in Steam,TF2, and DOTA2)

This game would literally be impossible to play at a high level on a tablet with touch controls...but sign me the fuck up for a tablet spectator client.

Even though they're non-standard equipment, Android can use both keyboard and mouse. I'd be happy to play Dota 2 on a Nexus 10 with a full setup like that.

Could work, sort of. A competitive player would be crippled by the lack of control, but I don't think casuals would care.

Putting out Dota 2 on tablets would be a huge mistake.

It would get crushed by the real e-sports champion Heroes of Order and Chaos.

I must be the only person in the world, that as never seen dota 2, or even knows what its about.

Spectating client would be neato, but nothing short of a mkb would allow you to play dota 2 at a high level.

Nothing.

I have thought about this a MILLION times. There is a moba type game on the tablet and it sucks.

I dont think a full dota 2 would work at all, the controls would just not work I dont think. But they could definitley make a dumbed down version and I would play it as much as possible.

But I also would settle for a spectator client. I could watch my EuroFriends play while i'm working

It could easily work.

One finger is movement.

2 fingers - one in modifier (attack or ability) the other in target is action.

Bring it on Valve.

Actually start working on it now. You can put out characters once every 2 months for a while, people won't mind.

"We were working on getting Dota 2 running on some tablets," he said. "That ended up being kind of a disappointment. But the good news is that tablets are getting faster very quickly, so I think we'll get the kind of performance we want and other game developers want in the near future."

Sounds like the hardware wasn't there so it's not happening, maybe in the future, but he doesn't say that. I wonder how they will work this out with the micro transaction stuff and if they would be okay with paying for the in-app purchase fees. Maybe try and get around it by technically using a web based interface? Is that how they do it on the Steam app right now? Or is it because you aren't purchasing iOS games so Apple doesn't care? I suppose they could go the route of releasing a separate store app that you would "Side load" for Android like the Amazon App Store and make deals with Samsung and the like to have it pre-installed.

On the hardware front, Imagine's Rogue chip should be sufficient, which would be second half of next year.

As for controlling the game, I imagine it would be a lot like playing mouse only, unless you keep your left hand over where the skills and items are.

There's already a DOTA game on iPad (Heroes of Order & Chaos) and actually it plays surprisingly well! You do not have

I can't even begin to imagine how I'd pull off a decent blink+epicenter.

There is seriously someone posting in the Kotaku comments, saying that devs should stop using UE3 for games, like Dota, because it is so taxing. His laptop can't play Dota, because it is too demanding and they should make games that are not so taxing on the hardware. LOL

If your laptop was made in the last 5-6 years, you can play Dota.

If they wanted a playable form of dota they would have to change it dramatically, the controls currently require far too much accuracy to be played on a tablet. Even "casual" players would find the game unplayable.

They would have to ultra -em it to make it playable and marketable in the on-the-go market I would think. Much higher base gold/sec gain and increased exp gain would go a long way to making it better, but I still can't envision a way that you could effectively target things in a teamfight or around creepwaves without a mouse.

And if you get really good with that control scheme, you might stand a chance in the newbie pool where everyone disconnects as soon as they get ganked.
