(Verge) Next Xbox will take over TV, interact with cable box

Really sounds like MS is trying to shoot the Business to Business gap with the Xbox brand.
Become a vendor, and let the providers deal with customers.

This...isn't a bad idea really, at least, not from a pure business standpoint.
They could get a big pull if they do create a set top box that catches on.

Mind you, I'm not saying any of this as a gamer.

Seems MS is now slowly trickling out info through official sources and so far nothing has really changed from the Edge or VGleaks rumors.

I don't know how these cable boxes work. Here in Germany you just have a receiver with a dedicated remote control. I don't think this will work the 720 then and MS supports only specific cable boxes?

SADLY, I can see MS spinning this and making it seems like this is a must. Control tv with your eyes, say next channel to change channel etc...

Then once people buy it, like a week later 90% of those who brought it for these features end up just using the controller anyway as it's a lot more simpler and some of these features become annoying/ not as good as thought to be.

Just my view.

including the ability to detect eye movement to pause content when a viewer turns their head away from a TV.

Considering how much time people spend on their phones/tablets while in front of the TV. Who would even want this?

that's because it's a fucking great idea.

Great? Not necessarily.

There is a market for it, but I don't know if it is as large as many are anticipating at this time. Currently, I have heard nothing that makes me feel like this is enough for me to bypass the current rumors of mandatory online for games.

I also had a daymare about commercials that just wouldn't go away.

Why would I want to be bothered when I am watching tv

This generation of kids I swear

The tv is not really the center of the modern living room so I'm interested in seeing where this goes.

Yeah, this. They're going after a diminishing market. "CABLE BOX INTEGRATION! Oh my god I have to get one!" How inspiring. If your box will cost up to $500 then it better have something that will catch your attention. No-one even spends much more than that on a TV anymore, let alone an accessory. I will still give them the benefit of doubt, but I just cannot help, but feel that they are going after a market that does not exist, and are risking their current one in the process.

Cable box? Guess this won't work with Freeview/Freesat/YouView in the UK.

Another tickbox against Microsoft then.

Good luck with that, lol.

Believe.

This sounds a bit like Nintendo TVii, which I've only used like 3 times. I don't care much for this, nor do I plan on having cable when I move into my own place ... so useless for me.

Always online streaming is a turn off too, I don't use streaming services that often.

I honestly don't see the benefit of this to a consumer. Can someone explain it to me if possible?

You'll feel safer knowing that Microsoft is watching and tracking your every eye movement at all times in real time and logging that information.

You're welcome.

So does that mean when commercials come on and I look away from the tv it pauses, therefore forcing me to at least look at the commercials? Microsoft has this advertisement thing all figured out.

I'm trying not to laugh, I really am.

But I'm failing :P

was xbox customer support any good to begin with

I think it sounds kind of neat, and not at all surprising to me.
The reactions in these threads are about what I expected.
I feel like MS could say their next console is free and gives out blowjobs and GAF would still doom it.

Now your cable service will be behind a paywall too! Pay for Xbox Live so you can access your paid cable subscription.

INNOVATION.

They are going after a market that will probably be eaten up by apple and google in a few years. But this was always their plan except for MS seems to forget they are not alone here.

Sounds pretty interesting really. I'm just bummed that my TV isn't plugged into anything put the power and a few consoles :(

Give me PGR5 and everything will be forgiven Mocrosoft.

i believe this is the direction the ps4 is also taking. sony and microsoft are taking different approaches to how they market their systems. sony is building up fervor among hardcore video game fans (which is what microsoft did with the 360), so it won't be like they forgot about them when they also start rolling out the media functions and sony advertises the machine as a media device.

microsoft doesn't believe they need the hardcore market anymore, and can appeal directly to people who normally don't play video games. they'll also leverage love of the xbox live friends list and popular games like call of duty and halo to gain initial support.

lol, I like how the comments section on the site is actually positive.

Because this is the part of the next xbox which is actually positive. Always online is shitty and MS deserves hate there, but the vitriol has reached such outlandish heights that its taking down features which are actually quite cool.

Look, this is what consoles need to do if we want to continue to see them in the next 10 years. Plus, watching cable as a user experience sucks, as do cable companies, and I'm all for having something I already own, be it the ps4 or next xbox, disrupt that experience.

There have been no leaks about Xbox being able to play games, so obviously it will not play games.

All Xbox related threads from now on should be moved to OT.

They would be better off there. It has been impossible to discuss anything xbox related

I must be the only one interested in this.

There are some things interesting.

2 big negatives.

1) Get up or move the wrong way and ads pause. You will watch those ads... (The main reason I switched to netflix)

2.) If your internet goes down you can't watch cable. This happens a lot from Comcast. >.>
