(Verge) Next Xbox will take over TV, interact with cable box

Will it be like nick arcade? That show rocked. Could even use kinect to dodge virtual fireballs

Holy crap I'm not the only one that remembers that? Wow.

...yeah, this is about all I got out of this topic. Many people are worried tv itself is kind of going away with people flocking to the internet, so MS decides now is the time to have a device that's big feature is using a cable box...

It is funny to see the overall tone of comments here versus The Verge. It is surprising to me that so many of you guys don't seem to give a damn about technology that isn't directly related to playing games.

WiiU has something similar with Wii U with the TVii but it seems like nobody really uses it. Cable access is just getting less and less relevant and necessary. I'm not writing this feature off because it could be cool but I really don't see it as a big feature.

Actually wouldn't be at all surprised if PS4 also had HDMI passthru. PS3 already made some moves in this direction with PlayTV and Nasne. Sony hasn't talked about PS4 media features yet.

I find it strange that people here seemingly want Microsoft and Sony to make the exact same machine. If the idea of non-gaming features appalls you then don't get one, but you don't have to ceaselessly crap up every Xbox thread with your negative opinions. There is obviously an audience for this product.

To be fair, this is a forum.

Detecting eye movement? Yeah right.

Sounds cool but I hope that you can turn off the pause for looking away shit. Will likely be finicky and sometimes I'm still listening while I'm attending to my phone, etc.

Not that I'm ever going to use any of this TV stuff, but in case they apply it to games too.

Your PC does a lot of stuff but Steam is mostly gaming. Valve isn't the one handling 150 different things at once on your PC, they focus on their gaming platform. MS is the one that's going to have to focus on all of these different areas and keep everyone happy at once, and they haven't shown they can do it all.

Microsoft is a little bit larger than Valve though, and they already have their fingers in a bunch of these pies. They're large enough and experienced enough to where they can focus on multiple things at once just due to the crazy amount of resources they have to back it up.

sneak peek at the new xbox 720 controller :P

I laughed at the 'turn your face and its pauses' thing the Kinect will implement, anybody who's watched 50 Million Merits (Black Mirror) knows what I'm talking about :lol

It's tiring tbh. I've no idea why they comment in MS threads, it's clear they don't intend to get the next machine. I hope the mods take firm action for the actual reveal otherwise it will just be full of trolls.

I think it's more that we each already have a dozen or so devices that can serve up Netflix or Hulu without the need for a paywall. Is it that shocking that gamers want a box that is focused on playing games?

Well... that's nice for the people who want it I guess. Personally I think I'm going to pass on this if the rumors of the media functionality are true. I don't actually have cable and I don't care to watch tv either so it seems like a lot of what they're targeting with the console is going to fly right by me.

Yea the majority seem to love this in the comment section on the verge.

If MS focus a lot on this AND make a gaming console comparable to the PS4 with such an advanced kinect, I cant help but feel it will be expensive.

I've been pushing for this kind of in-between device for ages. I always thought Nintendo would do it, with their whole "Wii Channel" interface, make gaming on the same level as television, accessible through one interface. No more "turn on and switch inputs to gaming," rather fully integrated and no longer a second-class citizen. Clearly they went a different direction with the Wu, instead making them equals by providing a second screen you can use while watching TV. It's neat to see that one of the other major players is going the other way, though.

Still can't imagine GETTING one, since the PS4 will have exclusives I want and I really don't want to own two machines that are identical bar a few exclusives on either end, but neat nonetheless. Maybe if they sell me a super-cheap one later on I'd get it just for the TV functionality.

Because I know how to read? It's a fucking pass through. It's not a media service.

You didn't read the part about partnerships with content providers?

How would the features work exactly if the system isn't working along side the streaming. Are you suggesting this is just an HUD overlay? Seems a bit pointless doesn't it?

Sounds pretty cool, but I seriously doubt it's for me since I barely watch TV anymore. This is obviously highly anecdotal, but based on my experience, a lot of you people (around my age, late 20's) don't spend much time in front of the telly anymore, though I have no idea how this would change anything. And as some have already said, it sounds like a US-focused box, right out of the box.

NEOGAF: gaming section

filled with gamers who want to game .

I don't get your point.

Luckily this doesn't happen everywhere in the world.

You can set up gaming parties, send messages, party chat etc. while still watching TV(although all of that should be possible with Smartglass).

That's it? :S I guess it might be neat to have but I don't personally see that as a big benefit to consumers. Especially depending on what 'features' they will lay on top of the current ones.

Speaking of which I'm surprised Sony hasn't pushed for something like that with the ps4...surely it must have crossed their minds. Correct me if I'm wrong in thinking this but wouldn't this be a potential big revenue stream for the maker? (in this case MS)

The next Xbox will play 98% of the games that PS4 plays. And this story isn't about Netflix or Hulu, but rather new features that other set-top boxes don't have.

To be fair, this is a forum.

It's traditionally been one that's heavily moderated in order to encourage actual discussion. Instead, anyone that wants to actually talk about the story is driven away by a sea of scorn and disdain.

People still watch TV besides sports?

European here and I couldn't care less about this. I'll buy both an Xbox and PS4 next gen but Microsoft is not really making me excited with all their stuff. I'm guessing the new Xbox will mainly be used for exclusives by me while PS4 will become my main goto console. WiiU just for the Nintendo stuff.

Better implementation + Microsoft marketing push behind it means that this is going to probably be a huge hit just like Kinect.

You know how it's easy to spot fanboys? When they start crying for everyone who has a bad thing to say about a company's machine to be banned.

Too bad the market is saturated with GoogleTV, AppleTV, etc. I don't need another media box to add to my other media boxes.

Games or GTFO.

Microsoft has proven they're in touch with the pulse of what consumers want. From Windows 8 tablets, Windows 8 phones, to windows 8 OS, their feature-rich products have been making huge splashes in their respective categories to the point where Apple and Google are running scared.
