This is strange from Microsoft. Almost like they think digital TV is the future of entertainment.
This is not 2001 anymore. Haven't felt this until I read this but they may well fall flat on their arse with this.
Man GAF is so shortsighted, you guys really don't see the potential for this.
DopeyFish has been the only reasonable poster in this whole thread.
Think about it this way, the Xbox will display your cable signal but through that you will also be able to access the console dashboard to download demos, chat with friends, post to FB/Twitter, etc.
So during a commercial rather than switching TV inputs to check on my demo download I can just press a button and find out the status right away. another idea would be to split the screen (PiP) and watch a Youtube video during the break only to have it pause the Youtube video and resume the show once the commercial is over.
There are endless ideas for implementations for this but again GAF only thinks about ads, or how Kinect is terrible.
Based on their recent pattern of reviving old product names (Surface, Outlook.com, etc.) for new products I'd predict they will call it Xbox Media Center, but someone already took that name and URL.![]()
My guess is they will create a Durango compatible sticker and program like they did on the original Xbox for routers when Xbox Live launched with UPnP. They will certify devices for HDMI CEC compatibility and let users know if their TV devices are ideal for Durango or if they will have to use an IR blaster setup.
Is the response to anything MS does going to be "ads?" They are far less of an ad company than Google (MS actually makes money by selling software/services). And Sony is the company that holds the patent on forcing you to watch/interact with ads on your TV.
What happens if you plug a PS3/Wii U hdmi cable into it, does it mean I can play them and be sighned into Xbox Live aswell? lol
Also , does anyone know if paying to play online is still gonna be the norm?
Why do you need and Xbox for doing the same you can do now. No offense but you believe Microsoft will make an special agreement with your provider in Croatia? The did not even cared for doing it in France or Germany.
But.... Does. It. Play. Fucking. Video. Games. Without. An. Online. Connection.
We won't know till May 21st.
If it doesnt, I dont care if the damn thing shits out gold bricks. I don't fucking want it.
But'll be fair... Ill wait for confirmation first.
So, you will be able to record TV on your xbox?
Sounds very interesting.
Yes believe it or not I actually enjoy Games & Movies/TV Shows. Holy shit right?
Sadly, high chance to be true.Don't worry, none of the features will work over there anyway I suspect
Sounds very interesting.

so what about the games? :/
Presumably.
And then you'll have to delete all your shows when you get a new game to install!
Once they announce the console we will see if these new studios are going to be able to keep up with sonys first party. It's not like we knew about the games for ps4 before they announced. Patience.so what about the games? :/

I have access to over 30 apps here in the UK, including SkyPlayer which gives me live satellite TV channels through the console. It's available in Germany too. France has a similar thing via Canal+. Australians have Foxtel. MS have been adding apps to the 360 at a pretty rapid rate and not just in the US.This. the xbox is really turning into a USA only product
LOL, TV.
My TV needs are sorted by my Apple TV box, thanks MS. I just want to play games.
The only way I see myself using this is if the Xbox 720's boot time is practically non-existent.
Otherwise waiting the typical 30 seconds to boot the console seems a bit silly, especially when my cable box is instantaneous.
Sad that the OP forgot to include the part where MS said they were no longer supporting games on Durango.
It will likely be "always on" like your cable box is. You don't think your cable box is actually booting each time you power it on do you?
CRAZY!!!!
You can only like one or the other... not both!!!
I couldn't be less interested in this. I don't get who Microsoft is even making this for. I'm easily in the top 10% of heaviest TV watchers on GAF and I can't imagine using a game console like this. My Tivo works fine and does everything I want it to with regards to cable/television watching. Why would I mess with something that works perfectly?

Exactly. Brb watching cable tv through my cable box.
Given Microsoft's MO when they entered into the game industry, I can understand this move. However, given the state of TV in 2013. I was expecting them to completely replace cable boxes and have a pay-per-content model kinda like what Intel is supposedly going to do in the fall. Either way, it'll be fun to watch an see how this pans out. I'd be much more interested in the Intel model where I can cancel cable and pay for The Daily Show or all Comedy Central content, Game of Thrones & Homeland. Or some other service where I can package a number shows for a set price rather than the over $270 I currently pay for cable. I also think that Sony will have something like this in store that they are not yet talking about but not in the same vein as MS.
I agree, replacing the box is much more attractive than simply slapping on some extra bells and whistles and calling it a day.I'm not convinced the public at large gives a shit about adding "interactivity" or web apps to their TV experience. Google Tv promised that kind of integration, with new video services and search built in. it's practically dead.
If this nextbox could replace a cable box, then it might be a worthwhile investment. But I refuse to believe that a large number of people would buy this in addition to a cable box in order to get skype on their TV or get an overlay with imdb info for show that's on (or any of the stuff they demoed with smart glass, as an example) they'd rather just use their own tablets and phones and read their private facebook/twitter/web/messaging stuff in private instead of having it on the TV.
I don't think it's a compelling reason to buy a new (expensive) box and I think most consumers will agree.
if this thing doesn't have amazing games for the hardcore willing to plunk down $500 at launch - or if the always online, no used game stuff is true - it will fail.
No I know it's always in a hibernation state because of the fact that when you unplug the cable box it has a very long boot time.
But nowhere in this article does it say that the Xbox 720 will have this feature.
I'm just saying, without that - it seems rather pointless to be switching over to your Xbox if it has a significant delay until you can start watching something.
Durango will implement different power states so that it can always be powered on, but will draw minimal electricity when not in use. The console will be ready instantly when users want to play, and will always maintain a network connection so that console software and games are always current.
Interesting decision by Microsoft as we are seeing more and more cord cutters.
Durango is rumored to have the same low power state for instant boot.
