Verizon starting tiered data plans July 7

I generally use less than 1GB per month (even though I have unlimited) so I guess this really won't affect me that much.

edit: or maybe it will now that the Netflix app was released... :p

Why? Unless you have ISPs that aren't assholes it doesn't matter.

Because some people would be happy getting a voice only plan and using the wireless component of the phone at home or the office.

The only reason you have to get a data plan with those phones from the big carriers is for the subsidy. Some people would rather pay $600 for the phone if it meant they didn't have to pay 50/mo. in data charges. After a year you would be saving money.

ATT forces data plans on any smart phone connected to it's network, whether it's bought from them or not.

Verizon must activate every phone on it's network, so you can't just use any phone you want with whatever plan. Same with Sprint.

T-mo is the only carrier you can get away with it now...but goodbye T-mo. Local GSM carries like Simply Mobile too, but they piggy back off T-Mo so who knows what's gonna happen with them.

Well that sucks.

I get 6GB for $30 which includes tethering.
This is closer to what I think is fair.

I don't understand why they want to charge people extra for tethering. You are paying for the data. You should be able to use it however you choose. Oh wait, it's because they can. Just like every other item they overcharge for.

B-b-b-but if only government would get out of the way! Consumers decide the price in a free market!

To my libertarian/tea-party friends: This is what comes of your ideology, monopolies buying out all their competitors and charging you more for less. Enjoy!
Yes, i hear the government monopoly in Canada is a real treat.

Absolutely true. This is why unlocked phones are basically pointless in the US, and will be totally pointless once Tmobile is bought out.

I don't believe that's totally accurate. From what I understand it requires data plans only for AT&T branded devices and not unlocked ones.

Some GAFers here have went 20GB and even replaced their home internet with it.

Don't abuse the privilege I suppose.
Wait, what? I can get an unlimited data plan and use tethering and replace house internet? Sounds great to me. Would kinda suck if person with the phone is out of the house, though

It cracks me up seeing all the "HUR I CUM, SPRINT" posts. Clearly none of you have every USED sprint. I live in one of the biggest metropolitan areas in the country, and my wife's Sprint coverage/reliability is no joke 50% of my Verizon service.

You won't know what you have till you give it to Sprint. Godspeed, you naive fools.

Depends on what it is. ATT needs the IMEI on their database. I don't know which phones are exempted, but I know the Samsung Vibrant won't get charged, and neither will any Nokia phone, which is why I'll probably get another Nokia phone, or the T959. Screw $30/month for internet.

If this kind of thing results in people acting less like smartphone-addicted asses in public spaces, then I'm all for it. Everywhere you go, people are hunched-over as they walk, typing on their tiny little smartphone keyboards, not paying attention to the world they inhabit, where they walk, how they drive, etc.

Let's jack-up these prices higher! Giddy-up!

No one is stopping you from living in the forest.

If I have unlimited data through Verizon on my HTC Incredible and my contract is up in November, if I buy a new iPhone or new Android at MSRP... Without moving to a new contract, can I stay on my unlimited data until I decide to cancel service?

Happier than ever that I switched to Virgin Mobile when my Verizon contract was up. Sure, the coverage isn't quite as good, but I get signal everywhere that I frequent, and I save $50/month.

Can't wait to see what the Triumph costs, if it's ~$300, I'll be all over it.

Nope, they require it for all smartphones.

all my friends with Sprint near me have great signal all the time. I guess it just depends.

Most nokias are considered feature phones to ATT.

If you try to use a Nexus One, ATT will push the data plan on you. They actively scan what phones are on their network.

I was going to get the 300 dollar PS Vita with a hopefully decent data plan from AT&T but if the rates are what they are then I may be saving my 50 to get something else. I'm not paying more for less.

I had Sprint for 10 years before going to Verizon. I notice no difference in my city in signal, other than Sprint 3G usually tested slightly faster.

You can't use your one story and write off everyone who says they're switching.

Looks like you can keep your $30 unlimited plan Verizon folks. New customers must sign up before July 7.

http://www.androidcentral.com/verizons-new-data-plans-broken-down-complete-detail

Having a hard time wrapping your head around the upcoming changes to Verizon's smartphone data plans? We just got all the dirty details dropped in our laps. Charts, e-mails, the whole kit and kaboodle, folks.

Let's start with what you see above. That's the official chart from the official training document (which you can see in full after the break.) As previously rumored, smartphone plans will start at 2GB for $30 a month, with $10 per gigabyte if you go over. There also are 5GB/$50 and 10GB for $80 plans. Unlimited plans are dead. These rates apply to 3G smartphones and 4G LTE smartphones.

Mobile hotspot access will cost $20 a month for 2GB of data.

Other points to note (many of which are detailed in an internal e-mail we've posted after the break):

If you have Verizon's $29.99 unlimited data plan, you'll be able to keep it after July 7.

You'll also be able to keep the $29.99 unlimited plan when you upgrade to a new phone. (No word on if there's a pricing difference or when that policy could change.)

If you add a line to an existing account, you'll not be able to chose the $29.99 unlimited data plan.

If you're a new customer between now and July 7, you'll still be able to choose the $29.99 plan.

So if you're in the market for a Verizon phone and want to get in on the current unlimited plans before the major changes take effect, you've got two weeks, folks.

Now continue past the break to see the full documents and e-mail.

Then why not just keep the $30 unlimited plan around?

I see no reason why Verizon and AT&T couldn't keep their unlimited plans as is and then just offered lower priced tiers with data caps below that.

It looks like I'll have to get my phone sooner rather than later now. I want that unlimited data plan and I can only hope that Verizon gets horrible business through the tiered data plans. Unlimited plans should be the standard now, not the exception.

Looks like ill be with verizon forever with my new iphone and unlimited data plan

it's only a matter of time before they make it difficult to hold on to the unlimited plans by "disqualifying" models, etc.

This is what ALWAYS happens.

Hmm, looks like I'll have to go grab an unlimited data plan before i get my new smartphone, can't upgrade yet I don't think. Although that article says I'll be able to keep unlimited data with upgrading, so shouldn't be a huge problem.

Has anyone had success adding the $30 unlimited plan without a smartphone attached? I'm planning on getting an Android phone soon, but I'd prefer to wait a month or two for a different device. I could stomach paying for the plan a little early if I knew it would guarantee I didn't get shafted later, though.

Is there still a good chance it will be announced today? If the new plans cover multiple phones, my Mom would get an iPhone and we'd share the 2GB.

I don't believe it covers multiple phones, you'd have to pay at least $20 for each phone that is using data.

I think Sprint is the only one that lets you have one family plan cover data for multiple phones.

It really was a sad day. Actually thought about (and visited) a Verizon store to get one of the plans. If the carriers are SMART, they will use these grandfathered plans as a lockin vehicle - particularly AT&T. Since I can't migrate unlimited to Verizon I have more incentive to stay with AT&T for the moment and get another form of WiFi sharing/hub device from Virgin or Clear.
