VG Leaks details PS4's 'dual camera'

People have pretty selective memory when it comes to this.

Some also say Kinetic is totally different than the Eyetoy, even though it's just a Eyetoy/PS Eye on steroids.
Haha, funny you say that. Kinect is the 360 camera, while Kinetic is the PS2 EyeToy game.

They suggest it will be bundled with every system but that seems to be speculation.

No mention about the sensors' refresh rates which would be interesting to know...

I do not want that in the box, as an accessory I don't mind at all. But bundlung it with every console would either mean higher launch price, or cost reductions in some of the console specs -> no way; one Kinect is already more than enough and this "I'm the controller" thing will die with the beginning of the next gen anyway.

IIRC Eyetoy was doing very basic stuff based upon motion detection. Are there any examples of it doing full skeletal tracking/depth perception like Kinect does?

I like it. It doesn't look to be anywhere near as expensive as Kinect, either.

So basically if you get orbis & durango, your living room will resemble a TV studio. In that mini studio you can play games in a motion that resembles having an epileptic fit

Just fucking great...

Please for the love of god dont make this a standard thing for next gen

OPTIONAL

Rite?

Anyway, specs.
Exmor-R sensors at 120fps. Sonys action cam already does 120 fps in 720p (60 fps in 1080p I think) and has an Exmor-R sensor.

Impressive.

How expensive, though?

There's also processing to take into account. Obviously this depends on what you want to do, but getting depth data out of 2 720p frames @ 120fps? I dunno, someone else can perhaps offer insight on that. I guess, though, they don't have to do the processing on full frames...lower res samples might be fine, with the HD feed just for improved visuals.

I can see them having two different refresh modes again. One at 720p, a faster mode at half HD or something.

Microsoft unveils Kinect 2: OMG THIS IS SHITTY I HATE MICROSOFT DISGUSTING PIECE OF CRAP NO WONDER ITS SELLING LIKE SHIT!

Sony unveils movenect: Oh this is exquisitely good, i cannot wait for it, it'll be pure joy.

Guys, please.

Sony always had ancillary controllers to Dualshock as an option. This just seems a natural evolution of their own current camera body tracking technology. It never publicized those options as a huge paradigm shift with Steven Spielberg stage cameos, or staged insane tech demos promising AI behavior only science fiction could imagine possible at todays technology levels (of course those were proved to be deliberately smoke and mirrors cheap tricks afterwards).

Orango APU has dedicated video processing block, maybe it will be tasked to work with this new EyeToy.

The PS Eye did some of this at a novice level. Some people just like to convince themselves otherwise..

It's like saying Move is the first of it's kind because it was more accurate and used better tech. Lol. It's bullshit.

Ps eye had 120hz mode, vita back camera has 120hz mode.

Pre-Oculus Rift, I would have been pissed to hear about such rumors/news. Now, I wholehearted welcome this addition. Bring on Kinect 2.0/Eyetoy 3.0 baby. This paired with VR, would be phenomenal.

Not to Kinect's level, no. EyeToy Antigrav tracked arms and head to steer the hoverboard. That's about as complicated as it got. It also didn't automatically recognize them like Kinect does. You would put your arms and head in a certain position, so the EyeToy knew what to track.

This better not be some standard shit that gets in the way of my games and takes up first parties' time to work on gimmicks.

and the processor overhead needed to cover it - will those lovely 4CU be available to developers or reserved for OS overhead?
According to the same source those 4CUs are free to developers to use as they see most fit.

Now the government can watch you when playing games.
Ron Paul 2016. Research NWO policies!

I know what eyetoy could and couldn't do, I still have one. Kinect is not eyetoy on steroids. What is interesting is that Sony thinks it needs to counter Kinect!

Holy grail VR gaming. One more thing, omnidirectional treadmill.

Sonystyle says $199.99, but it has lots of fancy features like Carl Zeiss optics which you don't need on the PSEye 2.0 :P

That's no good. They need to run at 240fps ;)

They could always upgrade to the sensor from the NEX-FS700.
4K resolution, records up to 960 fps in 1920x216 interpolated to 1920x1080 (only for 19 seconds though :P ).

Sony-NEX-FS700.jpg

Want! Only $9900!

I hope SONY makes a cheaper SKU with no camera and none of that crap, win win situation for people who are interested in this plus cheaper price.

Only thing is, when you jump from 30fps to 60fps or even 120fps the amount of light coming into the sensor is cut down significantly. Let's hope Sony doesn't skimp on the sensors in this camera.

Personally, even though I own the PS Eye and even Wonderbook (got it for my sister who is a Harry Potter fanatic) I'd rather not have the new camera as a pack-in.

At least they should offer 2 SKUs.

The PS Eye was able to track faces, and the body.

Eyetoy could only track your outline, and not particularly well at that (especially if lighting was an issue). Depth was impossible without the addition of glowing spheres (move).

I'm hoping this new one will be able to handle psuedo depth via stereoscopy. Time will tell though.

Of course they would, Kinect has been very successful in getting the casual crowd. It was a really smart move by MS.

It all depends on how they market/intend to use it.

I like the idea of voice chat and a microphone built into every box. I think their intention with this is to grab hold of the less sophisticated Kinect 2.0 games.

Isn't there a Sony patent about dual depth sensing cameras? If so, we could find out what they hope to achieve with this by looking at the patent and the capabilities of the product.

Why does Sony continue making things like this when no one likes it/ wants it?. You rarely see people excited about motion controls, doing gestures to the camera. It's all gimmicky crap.

So controller free gaming was never possible before Kinect?

Okay.

I guess we can act like Sony didn't release a camera peripheral for it's last 2 consoles. So when they release it for this one, we can act surprised and complain about how we don't want a Kinect clone.

I still don't think it should be bundled, but oh well. Like one poster mentioned, at least every will have a mic, for those who like that stuff.

Pretty much this

having this unified across two major systems will be a good thing. at least now developers can give critical thought into how such a thing might improve the game experience. if it doesn't, leave it out! it's just as tool.

i dunno, for me this is the first really interesting thing i've heard about the ps4 aside from the share button.

Haha, holy fuck.

Theres another one of these that made me shit my pants.

ANYWAYS, fuck this external camera horseshit. Put a front facing camera on the controller. That would be atleast useful, ie video chat, taking pictures, recording video and uploading it somewhere (mind you, this one doesn't seem that useful but fuck it)

It would be better if they bundled every system with a headset like MS does. Using the camera's mic means it would pick up all other sounds around your house.

Head tracking could be awesome. I'd love it for FPS. That's one of the things I was really hoping for when Kinect was announced but it never happened.

Also, there better be something to compensate for background noise if this is the voice communication solution. I fucking hate hearing echos of the game through other people's mics.
