Why dont we start a petition for the PS4 with 4GB of GDDR5 for games only and maybe even 1 or 2 GB system memory?
If Sony wants bandwidth akin to what GDDR5 provides (in the said amount) but chooses not to go with GDDR5 (or can't) -- what other alternatives remain? How many different ways can you achieve the above and, subsequently, which seems the most viable?
So how much of that 4 GB would be reserverd for the OS?

I would guess 1GB. TBH, though, I'd be fine with an OS like Vita's in PS4, more or less...which uses 512MB. But I guess Sony might have more resource-aggressive plans in mind for PS4.
Sixteen channel DDR3 would offer the same bandwidth and much better latency. Though board and memory controller would be insanely complex I guess. If Sony wants bandwidth akin to what GDDR5 provides (in the said amount) but chooses not to go with GDDR5 (or can't) -- what other alternatives remain? Wide IO2, 2.5D RAM, 3D RAM, some form of Hybrid Memory - but its all unproven and unreleased tech.
Needs to be able to use the web browser though (at least I'd like that) and any other apps while a game is paused. Whatever additional OS memory's it takes to make the happen that's what they need to aim for.
Is this even possible? What difference does it make if it's retail or PSN? If they can emulate one, it should affect the other?I have a feeling that Sony only releases games on PSN that will also work on the PS4, maybe they have already compiled them for PS4 or at least ran checks to make sure it will work, at least true for the last couple of years. My bet is that most PSN games will work with PS4, even games like Bioshock 2.
Disc games, forget about it.

If it's too good ot be true, it probably will not happen = Sony
I'm not getting my hopes up yet.
What are the other additions they could be making to the system, I assume bluray is still in.
Will they try to push 4K through the PS4?
I don't see people jumping on 4K like they did HD, unless the price of 4K comes down so drastically that HD is phased out.
In other words what will be their "gimmick" for want of a better word, besides "how powerful" this console is.
Will the HDMi cable finally be standard in the box?
It certainly is going to be a long wait to E3 riddled with more and more rumors.
None.So how much of that 4 GB would be reserverd for the OS?
None.
Needs to be able to use the web browser though
The PS4 will contain a SSD.
Really? No more twitter trick necessary?Vita can do that now, post FW2.0.
I can guarantee you every Orbis and Durango game will be 20-30 gigs, minimum.
Meanwhile at Sony HQ...

Question is how much of that 512MB is actually reserved for OS?
There is 1GB of main memory in Vita and 512MB is reserved by the OS. Probably a wee chunk of the VRAM too.

What Im thinking to. Other ram on the board for this.None.
Why would they reserve extra VRAM for OS aside from a few MBs.
Question is how much of that 512MB is actually reserved for OS?
For movies, likely. For games, not likely.
Yoshida is probably dying of laughter somewhere. While playing PS4.

Early reports of GT6 indicate it will not be a completely overhauled physics/game engine, but more an evolution of the current GT5 build (albeit with better graphics and performance)
.
Or completely agreeing. Sony and Microsoft made their design decisions surrounded their successor machines in 2011. Changing any thing at this stage would mean throwing away a billion dollars and an entire year worth of work.
I don't think Sony ever believed in their wildest dreams Microsoft would opt for 8 GB of RAM. Hence, the September Devkits approaching 6 GB of RAM.
Lets just wait and see. I doubt they will use 1gb of precious GDDR5 for os functions.
What Im thinking to. Other ram on the board for this.
No need for a petition either. Sony is reading this thread.
Ugh I hope not, I don't want to deal with SSD until capacities go up and prices drop. Basically I don't want one until they've made regular hard drives totally obsolete, and until 1TB+ SSD's show up at very affordable prices that hasn't happened.
Consoles aren't designed in vacuums. If you change one part, the entire board becomes useless. You cannot make last minute alterations without spending 500 million dollars. If Sony were to add an extra GB of LPDDR (Which is stupidly cheap), it would cost another billion dollars to engineer, test, tape out, and put into production. Things aren't black and white. Sony made a concious decision whenever they created target specs for their machine. This is what they wanted, and this is what they are getting.
Sony's been showing off GT5 in 4K running through daisy chained PS3's at CES (and before). This could be an indication of things to come. Early reports of GT6 indicate it will not be a completely overhauled physics/game engine, but more an evolution of the current GT5 build (albeit with better graphics and performance). I don't think its out of the realm of possibility that Orbis will be able to push some games at 4k.
Sony loves pushing the envelope. Unfortunately its not always financially successful. There are plenty of critics of 3D, but i must say, i am personally glad games like Uncharted 3 and GT5 have a 3D option. Both those game make great use of the effect. Based on Sony's track record of adopting new tech early, i think 4K is a possibility (even if limited).
On another note, everyone's been talking about 4 GB of GDDR5, which would be excellent... but lets not get ahead of ourselves. The final system specs could very well only have 2 GB.
The PS3 has a 2x BD read speed, and the most common Blu-Ray drives nowadays have 6x, so if Sony uses a 6x drive in the PS4 it would stream about twice as fast as the current 12x DVD drive in a 360.

Source?
You can forget about 2GB I think, 4 is minimum. Probably 6 or 8.
4GB Vram with insane bandwith and 2 for for Main. (512mb reserved for OS)
I'm confused. I just checked on wiki and it states that it has 512 MB system ram & 128MB of vram.
VGLeaks says 2GB is the current target, and it might be raised to 4GB. Or not. With absolutely no improvement in IQ (no higher res textures, assets, special effects etc). All it is is a resolution bump.
4GB is the target amount for final spec, not in devkits.

Is that still the case, the PS3 has been a success because of Western philosophy to tech.Seriously? Not even Sony US/EU have much to say when it comes to decisions made in Japan...

Doesn't the Vita also have a 4GB flash storage for OS and updates?
