Video game art/designs that just upset you.

The poses don't offer much in originality and I find the composition really weak. Aside from showing that it is a shooter, It doesn't really offer much insight into the kind of game it really is. And the back of his helmet looks like a visor.

So this is embarrassing. The back of his helmet looks SO much like a visor to me that I straight up thought that was his front.

This guy. This guy right here signalled the beginning of the end of appealing Pokemon design.

Mr. Mime how I hate thee

He's my favourite pokemon >_>

It's crazy, but you hit the nail on the head. That';s a stylistic issue not a design one, the Sorceress' dress is well designed, just stylistically over the top. Kamitani is a great artist with a very particular style (read: breasts, breasts everywhere!).

Y'all have hit on the majors; Pizza Cutter, Nooj, New Spyro, Putty Squad. I've gotta go with PayDay 2. The mask designs get me irrationally irritated.

Something about them, just infuriating to look at.

Yeah, them. That's one I missed. Looks like that Saw dude.

"Upset" is a bit too much, but I'm still getting occasionally annoyed by Zero Suit Samus. It's not that a strong, independent woman cannot be sexy or wear skintight clothing and high heels, but somehow, of all the strong intelligent women in videogames "eligible" for revealing skintight clothing and high heels I feel Samus was the least suited.

Oh well. It's an established character now, so who cares. Not like it's a biggie after MOM, anyway.
Seriously how can you guys hate this design, it's incredible.

He makes me want to play Angry Birds. That alone is enough to warrant his slow and gruesome death.

I get the point and I agree with it, but some of those don't really belong here. Agent 47? Joel? Altair? Jensen? Not really comparable to Yet Another Generic Bald Space Marine.

And why is Chris Pine one there? He's an actual man that actually looks like that. And he's not bald.

Silent Hill: Downpour. Silent Hill has always been known for its great art direction and especially when it comes to the creatures, Abstract Daddy and Pyramid Head being the top examples. So what happened in Konami's latest butchering of the game?

Yep, that design came straight out of Clive Barkers asshole. But maybe it was just one bad creature?

What the fuck is that? It just looks like a slipknot band member. That's not scary.

What about some starfish with rollercoaster parts on it?

Really there was only one semi decent design in the whole game, and that was the white mannequin thing. Everything else was downright embarrassing, especially with SH standards in mind. Maybe it would have been fit better into a game like Dead Space where the design philosophy seems to be just as bad.

?

The "design philosophy" for Dead Space (at least the first one) was consistent and very appropriate for the type of horror game it was trying to be. The things you posted would also look incredibly out of place in Dead Space.

Over sexualization of women in video games, it annoys the shit out of me to be playing a game, and big breasts are shoved in your face. I can't play Bayonetta anymore, and I can't play Mercenary Kings because of the title screen, and the ridiculous, breast motion in that game, same goes with Scott Pilgram.

It just gets to me.

Bayonetta is clearly more on the A side of the scale than the T in T&A. Same with the P.N.03 main character.

It bothers me in some cases too (like I said in this thread or another, 'heels' ), but really not for Bayonneta, as it is so much over the top that it feels like a parody of itself at the same time.

You know, upsetting doesn't have to mean bad. It could also mean that it makes you uncomfortable or unsettled. There are a lot of designs I don't like not because they're bad designs but because they leave me legit shook.

Danganronpa's art style and designs are the reason why I'm not playing it. It already had the school setting working against it, but the way how the characters look is just too off-putting. It's a shame, because people tell me it's a game I could enjoy.

No thank you.

I haven't played it yet (though I do own it), but the fat guy disturbs me and has done ever since I first saw him. Seriously... Is he like half-bear or something?

Honestly the rest of it is fine though, some of the characters just look a bit over the top to look cool.

The design philosophy of Dead Space enemies is actually pretty distinct and consistent. The artists looked at images of car crash victims (Seriously) for ideas on what the human body looks like when violently damaged. They also tried to avoid using humanoid silhouettes to further demonstrate how the Necromorphs are bodies twisted into other shapes instead of just walking corpses, so you have things like legs twisted together in a tripod structure or babies that walk like quadrapedal animals instead of crawling. There's an obvious influence from John Carpenter's The Thing too.

Of course, it looks ugly and nasty and gross, but that's kinda the point.

Hugo from Street Fighter has been mentioned in this thread, but the irony is that it's actually one of the more realistic SF characters, given that it's basically a carbon copy of Andre the Giant from 1978, via the Andore bros design from Final Fight.

Jet Force Gemini character designs as mentioned previously, are well worthy of disdain, they are sub par to the even the kind of character design you'd expect to see on supermarket own brand Rice Krispies from 1983. They're so badly designed as to be cringeworthy.

I'm also inclined to agree with many regarding Japanese RPG character designs; especially effeminate male characters with Japanese facial features but with Nordic hair and eye colour wearing convuluted and ridiculous outfits with zips, complex looking fabrics and gimmicks aplenty.

Also, almost all female characters in fighting games are bad, excluding the classic vanilla Chun Li, either being hyper sexualized or grossly underpowered looking waifs, yet quite capable of fighting huge Zangief types with 'girl power' alone. It's just an irritiating and overdone concept that stretches even fantasy based games to their limit of credibility.

I really hate claymation looking games. Creeps me out something fierce. I think the Sober music video scarred me as a child.

Whaaat? What's wrong with other SF female characters?

I just don't like any of them except Chun Li, the rot set in for me as early as Cammy, the second female character ever in the series - to this date one of the most ridiculous female character designs in any fighting game, though, granted a good cosplayer Cammy is an amazing sight to behold.

Yeah it's a sexy design, but nothing more than that in a fighting game context IMO, the rest have all been much the same, either hyper sexualized or looking like they couldn't punch their way out of a wet paper bag, though I did think Mika was at least an original looking design.

In fairness there's been plenty of terrible male SF character designs too, T Hawk, Gill, etc.

EDIT: I have to admit I'd forgotten about a few of the roster and in hindsight I do also think Ibuki and Makoto are great female character designs in SF, but because both, like Chun Li, are primarily dressed in a functional martial art style, and not trying to be deliberately cute or sexy, it just adds so much more integrity to their characters.

Too many fighting games have vapid, 'sexy' and totally unrealistic female characters, I just prefer more grounded and legitimate characters in fighting games in general.

The never dead monster ( boss? ) design was kinda interesting and make a rather lasting impression. That's okay in my books.

If anything he should have posted U8.
Yeah, UVIII art style is somehow weird. It's almost the same as UVII, but darker, grittier and just off (the whole game is also bad but that's another story). I also like UVII art style, and the perspective. I really miss games with such perspective (and freedom to interact with the world) :(

The original design for her had a darker shade for her hair, a bigger nose that pointed down and wasn't perfect and more fierce eyes that were slightly too big for her face. She had a touch of wildness to her look that was better and had more character. Your average gamer seems to hate it when women in games don't look like dolls so they changed her look.

Look at these pics:
tenuestokioties.jpg

Edit: Just realized her arms got smaller and less muscular than the original. lol SE.

The final design is very (poor) anime inspired just like the story.

I'm going to guess that it is all Motomu "A rose by any other name would smell like Lightning" Toriama's fault.

I really don't like this trend when indy developers try to do some crazy art style, it's disturbing and it doesn't look nice.

I'm struggling to find anything offensive about these. What do you think Don't Starve should look like instead?

Chun-Li's getup isn't particularly functional or suited to martial arts, when you really look at it. Yeah Cammy's high riding leotard is an obvious attempt at sex appeal, but it also happens to be a more practical outfit than Chun-Li's.

I see your point, but I still disagree, Chun Li at least has a traditional kung fu style outfit on and massive spikes on her wrist bands that would be pretty useful. Cammy has a piece of string covering her ass and a hat, it's about as good a fighting outfit as being naked would be.

Although having said that the women's UFC outfits are somewhat minimal too, but if they wore something like Cammy's outfit, things would get X rated in a hurry.

There might even be a market for it.
