Video game cartoons in the 80's, 90's and maybe present time

The only thing I remember about the super mario cartoons is that mario constantly made italian food related puns.

I don't understand why they did that. It'd be like having a black character constantly make soulfood related puns, mexican character having chimichanga related puns, etc....

Was Mario even Italian in the cartoons? He seemed to have a really thick Brooklyn accent

for the longest time i've believed he was an italian american originally from brooklyn, retcons be damned {yoshis island}

Yeah, most of the backstory for Mario I knew about was taken from the cartoons.

There was a Japanese movie produced in the mid-80's that depicted Mario and Luigi as shopkeepers or something. And they didn't originally live in the Mushroom Kingdom, they arrived there through a warp pipe. I thought that was interesting.

What more could you want from a cartoon......Belmont, Zelda, Megaman, Kid Icarus, GameBoy, Samus, Motherbrain, King Hippo, Donkey Kong, Doctor Wily

Thought i was never too sure on the direction the Belmont character took, he was soooo damn vain and a right chicken!

I really like Captain N. Yeah, it's a hokey cartoon, but it's so toyetically cheesy, I can't help but enjoy it for what it is. I was all right with the fact that the characters didn't always resemble their game counterparts. That sort of thing never did bother me.

I remember Darkstalkers. It rightfully came on at like the pre-7am Saturday death hour that they put all the ultimate crap cartoons that could maybe generate more views than running an infomercial at that time but was so terrible of a time slot that a network wouldn't dare show anything of quality.
Eh, Darkstalkers may not have been a good representation of the game, but I found it pretty funny and entertaining. How can you not love Lord Raptor's demo tape?

I'd also like to defend the second season of the Street Fighter cartoon. It had a new team of writers, and started moving from episodic to continuing story arcs and drawing in characters and plot elements from the Alpha games. It was still poorly animated and kind of a mess, but had some redeeming qualities.

Belmont, Mother Brain and Eggplant Wizard were pretty funicus.

Are we doing all cartoons or are we being weird in here and pretending like anime isn't just Japanese cartoons. If not I have some shows if so *sighs*

Earthworm Jim he's such a groovy guy. Earthworm Jim. A hero for all time.

Back in the day I thought the Earthworm Jim game was based on the cartoon. Also Earthworm Jim had the best intro music ever.

Retronauts did a podcast on Captain N.... God Mega Man, Donkey Kong ... Simon Belmont. Mother brain.... oh god!

I always thought this show was better than a Sonic the Hedgehog-related cartoon had any right to be.

And you are correct.

Western cartoons based on Japanese IPs = always terrible.

Western cartoons based on western IPs = not too bad.

And don't come at me with that Sonic SatAM garbage. Shit was terrible.

pls go. SatAM was grate. It's okay to admit that there is an exception in your theory, because otherwise you are just going to look foolish.

The only thing worse than video game cartoons are video game films!!!

Bob Hoskins probably still has nightmares about doing that awful Mario Bros. film lol

If you talk about anime, the first prize should go to the Ys anime, especially the first part.
you feel as if you are playing the video game itself!

I found the Dragon Warrior anime that aired in the US recently.

It was based on Dragon Quest III and had character designs by Akira Toriyama.

Plus, its all on youtube in one playlist.

Also, everyone seems to forget that there were two Mario cartoons in the US. The first one with the Mario rap at the end, and the second one based on Super Mario World.

Finally, maybe its nostalgia, but I don't remember the Mega Man cartoon being too bad. Discotek Media just got the US rights to it, and the full series is coming out on dvd later this year.

It's based on the comics and not the games AFAIK.

Not really. The show added a female character who runs a lab for them because you obviously can't have a kids show without a quirky wiz kid!

She's not that bad, but she's pretty much pointless.

The comic doesn't have a linear plot anyway, every story is a new case.

There was the Earthworm Jim cartoon, and it was actually pretty good.

I remember watching that all the time. It was pretty solid.

I also remember watching a Sonic cartoon. I really liked it at the time. I remember that Mutant League hockey cartoon as well. There was a skeleton with long hair and sunglasses (I think) and some lizard guy. Only two things I remember from that show. Used to watch it before school.

Just imagine how amazing a proper New take in Captain N would be, with actual characters and a plot and good design and animation and stuff.

Just imagine.

It only would work (money more than anything) if its a show done for Nintendo and probably helped or done by Nintendo. So only Nintendo properties.
Basically Super Smash Brosh the Animated Series. Still Captain N and the princess would have to be in it (and I would like that), becuase you need a main character that kids associate with having adventures with famous Nintendo characters.
It could be great if they made the villians threatening if they have to be (Ganondorf, Mother Brain and Ridley...) and funny if they have to be (Bowser).

Doesn't get more 80's than the Pole Position theme song. (Wait, if those three are supposed to be siblings, how come they all have different colored hair?).

such a kick ass intro. Too bad the show sucked

I honestly thought this was a cute show and was a decent adaption of it's game franchise. Even if it was about Foghorn Leghorn and Paul Lynn attacking the Shmoo from Lil' Abner.

The show actually lived up to it's intro at times and that's quite a feat.

Lousy intro. The show?.....Meeehhhh. It has it's moments. Mostly horrible groaner kids jokes but I've seen a lot worse. I do like some of the nods to classic Namco like "Maze 256", Pac-Man's Galaga toys or the fact that their cafeteria has a Pac-Man/Galaga arcade machine. That's just weird. While the Hanna-Barbera Pac-Man was a part of my childhood, take off the nostalgia glasses and this new one's about equal if not better.

At least the CGI quality is a lot better than this.(To be fair, that show's like 10-12 years old.)

Megaman and Simon Belmont look appalling. I played Megaman 1 before that show came out and Castlevania, Simon's Quest. Belmont was such a little bitch on Captain N. EVen back then, I thought so.

I'm very, very surprised nobody mentioned this yet.

Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie

This is the first and still best Sonic cartoon I saw, fuck everything else.

Land of Darkness scene

I love everything about it. *_*

It's price is insanely high for a DVD on Ebay, but I managed to get one some years ago for a descent price. EDIT: Well, I found this one which is not bad at all.

You can watch the entire thing on youtube anyway. :P
The voice acting is awful, but everything else looks solid.
