150DPI is the minimum, so roughly 150*24 x 150*36 (3600x5400). Image mosaics are kind of a different story.

Image I'm working with is bigger than that but its gonna need some heavier editing to look good at that resolution. Thanks answering quickly though!

However if it's just line art with a low color depth you could easily have the printing software resample the image without any noticeable image degradation.

Unfortunately not the case for me.

You might try using photoshop to reduce the image size to either just under 24 or just under 36(23 or 35, whichever reduces the image size least) then increasing the canvas size to exactly 24"x36" with a black or white border. That way, it won't crop the image any.
