Video of Black Mesa: Source gameplay leaks

Does bailing out involve continuing to watch videos and commenting on them? What does staying onboard consist of?

I was a member of the team for a brief moment back in..2005-2006? I don't remember the exact date, but back then the only new thing we had implemented a Grunt with very limited AI. VA hasn't improved since then, but that's the quality you get with practically no $$$

This actually looks pretty cool, especially for a source mod. That said this really needs to get released soon.

Life's too short, guys.

That voice acting....

1. This is obviously not the final build. This does NOT excuse the long wait, but people criticizing the sound design need to familiarize themselves with the concept of polish.

2. This is how Half-Life 2 plays. If the game looks clunky to you, or bland and slow, you're probably not a big fan of Half-Life 2 mods in general. Already, this mod looks like it can stand among the ranks of MINERVA, Mission Improbable, Precursor, Nightmare House 2, and Research and Development. And this being an HL remake, it will be three times the length of all of those. Don't know what any of those are? Then I'd recommend you something more along the lines of Portal, L4D, or Team Fortress 2.

3. The voice acting is no worse than the original Half-Life.

You, I like you and these words.

There are problems with the lighting in this build, I think. Namely, there isn't really any. Lots of areas were far too dark and needed some light design guidance for the player I think.

But otherwise, I think it looked alright. Overdue, sure, but decently if not well made. If the final version will be a bit more polished (it will) then I'll probably play it!

Oh, I wonder if this leak was actually a planned 'leak'. Not 100% sure, but some elements of that playthrough looked a bit... thought-out. Planned-ahead, if y'know what I'm saying... but I guess the leaker could've wanted it to look good...

If they're disabling shooting while sprinting - this could be because sprint was canonically only a suit power in HL2 and after that - then it doesn't really encourage the same kind of play as HL2 at all. That's kind of a hard line to draw though, they can't replicate HL1 movement perfectly in Source anyway because of bunnyjumping not existing anymore and some tweaks to jumping in general, and HL2 movement builds on sprint which can't really exist as a suit power.

Ah I see. I shudder every time I think of the development this has been through. Reminds me of another black mesa reimaginging that went belly up. All that potential, looked crazy for goldsrc.

Wow this looks amazing, very nice. SMH @ the negative nancy's in this thread. Crow will be served for sure when it comes out.

Well... at least the skybox looks better than the first game =.=

The rest is rubbish. Every change they've made has been for the worse.

The video looks good aside from the soldiers' voice acting. I don't mind the addition of iron sights, they seem to work well in my opinion. If people wanted everything exactly the same they should just play the original game.

Why?

Unless you're just jumping on illogical hate bandwagon then nevermind.
Because there is no reason for this to exist. The original is perfectly playable and by the time this comes out, it's going to look dated just like the original does. So what does it offer over the original? Iron sights, campier voice acting, and rgb splits every time you get shot? It's a project that was horribly mismanaged, devoid of creativity, and way too large in scope to ever be completed in time and still look visually relevant. Valve at least has peerless art direction to carry the Source engine this far, these guys have nothing.

The only thing to survive a video game over the test of time is its game design. Everything else gets outdated.
I hope they included a classic mode or something that takes out all of these sad but lulzy changes. If not, we might see a mod of a mod!

Cut them some slack. This is still a fan project. That does not mean it should be void of criticism but some of you are being way too destructive.

Are you actually trying to convince people that there were changes that could've been made that you would've been okay with? :lol

Besides, Valve beat them to the punch!

And charge real money for it!

Seriously. Buncha sensationalist bastards up in this thread.

Game looks fun. I'd play it in a heartbeat.

A ton of people would love to play a full remake of HL1, enough so that a small group of people have spent years of their life trying to make it happen. Just because you don't want to doesn't make that invalid. There's no reason to hate something like this as much as you do, I really don't understand it.

Yes, why not? Sprucing up the graphics was just about the only thing they needed to do. The problem starts when they start thinking that they're better than Valve at game design and Half Life. You can argue that iron sights make for a better game, but they sure as shit do not make for a better Half Life.

Awful voice acting. Didn't like the music, will replace it for the original soundtrack as soon as this damn mod gets released.

You really can't tell that the newer voice acting is fucking terrible in comparison?

Agreed. They just need to add a shit load of voice modulation and it'll be up to the original's standards.

Is there a Half Life HD project being worked on anywhere? I really just want it ported to a newer engine with slightly better graphics.

No you don't. Whoever in charge of it would probably make shit decisions like adding zoom to the magnum.

The problem starts when they start thinking that they're better than Valve at game design and Half Life.

So what does tying an iron sight animation to the magnum's zoom change about its functionality?

I don't understand where people are getting this from. It's really mind blowing the vitriol people have for a remake of HL1 done by modders for free. If you don't like it don't play it but why are people filled with so much hate about it?

Well put. This is why I don't really understand the point of the Black Mesa mod. They've put so much time and energy into making something that, while impressive IMO, is going to have no lasting appeal.

So where exactly does the "it's free so you must love every last thing about it" argument end? Would it be okay if they added killstreaks from Call of Duty into the game? I mean, since it's free and all, it should be a perfectly legitimate and acceptable evolution right?

My guess someone had this on their show reel, sent it around to companies trying to get a job. Said company staff knew this was a highly anticipated mod, with no legal repercussions and leaked the would be game maker's work.

Given how tight lipped the team have been so far there's little reason to think it's an internal leak. Looked fairly decent I think.

It's a mod/remake of HL1 done by modders. They could do whatever they want I don't care I'll play it because it's not canon.

If Valve were doing this and added iron sites kill streaks etc THEN i'd be pissed because it's Valve doing it not random people. When Valve does it it's canon and effects the rest of the series.

So much hate. Y'all should be amazed that they're still working on this, (a mod made in their own free time) not bagging on voice acting and iron sights.

The voice acting made me think of Idle Thumbs when they do mock video game voices for some reason.

Anyway, looks pretty terrible. They probably shouldn't even bother anymore.

The HL1 magnum never had a zoom, that was in multiplayer. You can argue how much of a change adding it to single player and then changing it into an ironsight for some reason is, but it's a design change.

played through half life this year the first time. I really didn't mind the grafics, but for someone who wants to experience half life for the first time this might be a good mod/game to look out for.
