It's really cool that they put a fan in the system but there aren't any vents so there's no way for the hot air to escape.

DRILL YOUR OWN VENTS! IT'S OPEN! OUYA!

There are vents on at least one side.

The base has like 24 small slits and the top of the case has 4 edges where there is a gap, I doubt they designed it with a fan to leave it completely shut like that.

Shadowrun online?

From the Kickstarter page:

What is Shadowrun Online?

Shadowrun Online is the second Kickstarter video game project set in the unique world of Shadowrun. The first project, Shadowrun Returns, focused primarily on providing a great single player adventure experience, while Shadowrun Online - like the pen & paper version - is all about experiencing the awesome world and gritty atmosphere of Shadowrun together with friends. Fluid co-op gameplay and intense player vs player faction wars set in a persistent and evolving world - this is what Shadowrun Online is about!

And the best part is: In Shadowrun Online the collective actions of players will not only determine the fate of the online game world, but our unique player-driven plotline will enable you to determine the future of the whole Shadowrun Universe! Events players trigger will also cross over into the pen and paper storyline - so you can shape the future of the Shadowrun Universe!

At its core SRO is a full Unity3D online game, accessible through Windows, Mac, Android, iOS- and Linux and on Ouya, with high quality graphics and great effects. It is fully cross platform, meaning you can play it on your tablet in the train, then go home to sit down at your PC to continue with the same character. Highly individualizable characters and a turn based system, which balances fast-paced action with deep tactical combat, make it a true Shadowrun experience.

The hate is ridiculous in this thread.

It truly is. If people don't like the console, don't come into a thread about it and shit on it. There's nothing stopping you from sticking with your X360s and PS3s, so keep that shit to yourself and let the people that are looking for genuine discussion have one without your clutter in the way.

This is great. Now I can experience the SNES/NES-era again.

A lot of those titles have really old school sounding names.

So is this thing about as powerful as the newest iPad?

http://www.dailytech.com/Report+App...+Not+in+Pure+CPU+Performance/article24255.htm - compares A5X from ipad 3 to the tegra 3

Though don't just go by raw numbers, best to see people recording their games on youtube over the next week to see how different stuff runs.

The ipad 4 and iphone 5 clock slightly higher in geekbench 2 but you could say it's very similar in gaming performance, and rather good too.

Yeah, if only we could apply that to Nintendo threads.

Anyway, just saw the SDK video walkthrough. Very cool :)

Yeah, the iPad 4/iPhone 5 will be quite a bit faster, however, few games will take advantage of that fact, because the largest majority of iOS owners have iPod Touch 4's, which are QUITE a bit slower, with far less memory. That's the advantage to a game console, developers know that everyone playing their game will be playing on the same system, so they can push it as far as it will go. Which is how the XBox 360 remained competitive for so long, though when it launched its GPU was basically a two-year-old architecture already.

Those comparisons aren't terribly useful given the fact that OUYA devs have said that the Tegra 3 is getting a lot more power than it would in mobile devices as there are no battery life concerns.

I was about to say the same thing.

People forget that not only does OUYA have the most powerful version of the Tegra 3 (the model T33) but there will be no screen to power and no battery life to hold back performance. Add to that the OUYA team making note of further hardware optimisation carried out in partnership with Nvidia and (as Dreamwriter above already stated) a stable platform that will allow devs to push the hardware for all its worth, and you have potentially a machine that will outgun many tablets and smartphones equipped with what appears on paper to be better hardware.

Even then, I ask, purely on a visual scale, does art not outweigh graphics?

Thanks.

It would be awesome if it had the same chip from the newest iPad. You could run games at 1080p with plenty of eye candy to boot.

I suspect the Ouya will be running most games at 720p.

The one thing that would almost guarantee a purchase from me would be a slick SNES emulator that could add a lot of anti aliasing like we see in those PC emulator threads. I don't have a good PC for such things, but I'd gladly buy one of these if it can pull that off.

Prototype does look a lil el cheapo but I like it overall

Well, it is going to sell for $99.

This is the developer version. The final version won't look like this and won't be plastic. They made the dev version like this to get them in developers' hands' faster to get them going.

Okay there are vents. My mistake, sorry. But those vents are literally just venting into the enclosed space between the system and whatever it's sitting on.

Doesn't the 360 have vents on the bottom too? This thing isn't cranking out a ton of heat either, so it's not like airflow is a huge problem.

The 360 has vents all over so that no matter what position it's in -- upside down, sideways, floating in some dark void in the middle of outer space -- hot air will be able to escape and dissipate. Also all electronics emit heat. All electronics are vulnerable to heat. Remember this thing is overclocked beyond factory specs.

Well of course, but I think these vents will be fine considering the amount of heat it'll be emitting.

But what do I know, I'm not an engineer or anything lol

$99 isn't exactly very much, some people might find the extra $39 worth it for the controller and possibility of the OUYA having some interesting exclusives.

Considering the Android controllers I saw at the store yesterday, the extra $39 is definitely worth it just for the controller, especially knowing that everything on the store is going to support that controller.

Yep. This controller also looks extremely comfortable. I wonder if it'll work on PCs as well.

Most of the android sticks out there will support blutooth via a cheap usb receiver letting you use a dual shock 3, and any compatible mice and keyboards you want. You can also just plug in a wired 360 controller.

And by the time the Ouya is actually for sale these Android sticks will probably be under $40, while ones more powerful than the Ouya will occupy the $60 price point. Tegra 3's GPU is pretty shitty, after all.

There's also the issue of software support. Does that big-publisher game you want support controllers? Are you going to be stuck using a mouse with games that use touch (hopefully not multi-touch), then switching to a controller for others?

A better question is if you're going to want to play any touch-based games on your TV with or without the Ouya controller. Besides, most of the promised "Big-Publisher" games are on the Google Play Store right now. Lots of them do support a controller right now.

In any case, I was speaking mostly to the sentiment that Ouya would be a good choice for people who just want XBMC and emulators. There's no sense in waiting for those people. They can buy today and get everything they could from Ouya for those needs, potentially cheaper with a controller they already know they like.

Reading the reviews on Amazon make the sticks sound more than a little dodgy. I also have to question how a device solely powered by the TV outlet and with no sort of heat dissipation can be comparable to something powered by its own power supply and with a fan. Sure, eventually they should be able to shrink it so it generates less heat, but not in 3 months.

Beyond that, it's like consoles - you can pretty much build a PC that will outperform a console (except maybe at launch) for less if you shop right. So why buy consoles? Partly for the ecosystem, partly for the games. In this case, they sold 1200+ development consoles. Even if it doesn't get exclusive games, it should get games optimized for it, as opposed to simply running tablet or phone games

Most draw power via a mini/micro-USB cable that can be plugged into an included AC adapter, or into any USB port the TV might have built in. These chips are all designed to go inside a phone, even the Ouya's, so heat and power isn't a tremendous concern unless you're overclocking it for some rapidly diminished returns.

Sure, these Android devices are of more interest to tinkerers, but if you want emulators and XBMC on the Ouya you're already in the realm of jailbreaking, sideloading and other non-official uses. If you're up for that, you could get started today. Hell, if the Ouya App Store ever goes anywhere you can probably sideload that on your Android stick, too.

Actually XBMC is making an official Ouya version. It will be listed on the Ouya store.

You don't really need a good PC to run SNES9X, I'd say you don't even need a decent PC. IIRC, it was running perfectly on my two years old MacBook Air, under OSX, so that would mean it would run on Windows with even weaker hardware. Hell, I'm pretty sure I was able to run that thing at 60FPS on some old Pentium 4 that I had years ago. You can't do real antialiasing to SNES games though, you can do various post processing filters, which again all run fast on just about any hardware.

The OUYA will probably be an awesome machine to tinker with and use as an HTPC.

Most of the criticism comes from the fact that it'll be an absolutely awful machine for any third parties to make any significant amount of money on selling their games.

I actually have a old Pentium 4 with the sole purpose of being a X Link Kai and emulator machine. I even use my retrode and xbox 360 controller with it.

SNES9X looks awesome on the old 720p HDTV I have it running on.

It is looking like Days of Dawn will not make its Kickstarter funding goal. Though a multi-format title, they were intent on releasing it on OUYA too.

The main guy needs a haircut but otherwise I love that art direction. Here's hoping the developers regroup and take another stab at it. Maybe as an OUYA exclusive?

Thanks. The appeal of the Ouya goes further though. The only computer in my home is a 4.5 year old iMac, so while I'm sure it could emulate old 16 bit games with ease, I can't easily play them over HDMI on my HDTV, and I'm hoping the interface on Ouya will make all the little stuff easier. I'm a total noob when it comes to the emulator/hacker world.

So being able to download an emulator already tweaked to run perfectly on Ouya, and probably having a nice interface to make it all easier, that excites me.

It looks better in motion though. I guess i exaggerated abit but it looks better than Shadowrun.

No, it doesn't look better than the 360 Shadowrun. Shadowrun has a noticeably higher poly count.

It looks like it could be a quality title but this is how kickstarter work :(, just not enough interest and tbh asking for 95k is a fair bit no matter what sort of game it is. If they resubmit maybe they will aim for half and limit it's release to one dedicated system to start with, a shame though.

I didn't know that the T33 was quad 1.6, that is much more power then I was expecting.
