Videogamer: Microsoft alters statement on Xbox Play Anywhere support

It was probably because that would mean if they released Halo people would assume Halo would then be coming to PC on release.

Does this mean that Microsoft are no longer pro-consumer because they might choose to have some titles that are console exclusive?

Not at all! It just means they need to stop treating their PC gaming initiative(s) as experiments. They need to make a full asterisk-free commitment to the platform, because frankly, they need gamers on Win 10 more than gamers need Win 10.

PlaysForSure except when it doesn't, and your fault if you were stupid enough to believe us or invest in our software or hardware platforms at any point in time. -Microsoft

So they reserve the right not to put every game on pc.

Did anyone actually think that halo 6 would be on pc??

Why not? It's not like Halo is still the monstrous system seller franchise it once was. Would bring in quite bit of extra revenue on PC.

I think this is just a move to cover for the few exceptions.

probably to cover their asses if some kinect game launches. or maybe they dont want halo 6 scorpio to be worse than on pc who knows

They understand that in a competitive consumer market clarity of proposition is vital right?

It's been a serious flaw of MS this gen that their communications have always felt unclear and too often they've re-worded or flat out changed their take.

This often doesn't actually clarify things in an open consumer market: it just generates impression that whatever they say may change hence trust nothing.

They need to really sort this out. Whatever they publicly declare has to be right and has to remain consistent.

I guess MS is going to have to decide very carefully which titles to keep as a exclusives, and which to bring to both platforms because how else are they going to sell the Xbox One.

Wow, you can't really trust anything that Microsoft said at that E3 press conference. Below are some of the statements they made where my BS detector went off...

  • no scorpio exclusives
  • we can render fully uncompressed pixels. these are the highest quality pixels that anybody has seen

I highly doubt this has anything to do with MS keeping Halo off PC. I'd guess it has more to do with not forcing some of the smaller studios they work with to do multiplatform development. I'd say it's still highly likely that every game developed in house by MS Studios will be console and PC.

Too good to be true, I suppose. I'm happy about Scalebound PC at least, and all the Forzas from here on out are still confirmed.

I mean, they gotta leave some exclusives for the Xbox.

I would imagine the next mainline Halo will be one of those, at least timed.

Yusef Medhi, you really should learn how to market yourself before an entire company because youre terrible.

I don't see the point in putting Halo on PC. Console shooters don't typically do well on PC. Counter Strike and now Overwatch have the platform locked.

I honestly think it's worth more as a console seller. Everything else should be fair game though

I believe they did this to either...:

1. Make "play anywhere" announcements get more buzz for future first party games instead of saying that all titles will be "play anywhere" (especially this early).

2. Cover themselves in advance just in case a future game doesn't have it for whatever reason(s).

3. A mix of both 1 & 2 (which is what I'm thinking).

I'm shocked Microsoft is backpedaling. Shocked.

I imagine it's just ass-covering for the almost inevitable Microsoft PC gaming backtrack. If it's really because they're going to do something like hold back Halo 6 then I think they're crazy.

Actually a bit annoyed by this one. Genuinely had nothing bad to say about this announcement at E3 and I thought MS had indeed turned a corner for PC gaming.

But they've confused their audience and backtracked again. Shame.

They never were.

Everyone is happy to line up to continue singing the praises of the most anti consumer company in the industry, which enables them to continue those behaviors. Good stuff, I don't get it either.

PC gaming is an afterthought for Microsoft which is ironic since Xbox was created to promote DirectX and by proxy support pc gaming. They created a platform to promote a standard to help PC gaming but now they don't put software for that platform on PC. They don't want to undermine their console but now they can't support PC gaming directly either.

This sounded like Microsoft was trying to bridge the gap and bring Xbox and Windows together but now I don't know anymore. Xbox doesn't make sense to me anymore. Sure it makes money but it doesn't fit with Microsoft's core business anymore. I hope Microsoft makes a strong move here and either folds Xbox in to Windows or spins it off because otherwise Xbox is in limbo. Its so frustrating to see Xbox languishing as Microsoft trys to appease both sides. As it stands, Microsoft is Xboxs biggest problem.

I thought that all future games being on play anywhere was announced at stage at E3, but if it really wasn't than this change is probably so they don't announce anything before its time rather than a backtrack.

They probably still want to have the news highlights when they announce more play anywhere games.

Maybe a bit off topic but can anyone explain what Microsoft publishing DR4 actually means? Like are they the ones assessing milestones etc or does that still fall to Capcom? Do they get the standard publisher cut of a game sale or does that go to Capcom? Is it just paying for marketing and nothing else?

I had the same question for them publishing Tomb Raider.

Probably 3.

I mean it was already not true since Dead Rising 4 wasn't part of the program. I'm guessing they are covering their ass for situations such as that. Also games they are bringing to PC but not Xbox One such as Mahjong, and hopefully a new Age of Empires

Gears and Forza is already coming and Frankie strongly hinted Halo was also. I don't think there's some conspiracy :P

Microsoft communication is a mess again ? it's maybe time for this corporate to have a real PR for once, just allow one guy to talk about one thing.
