Videogames: A Woman's Touch

Yeah, speaking as a female-type, pre-zero suit Samus was pretty much the pinnacle of all that is good and female for us to look up to in video games. I still love her, but sometimes now I want to hand her a blanket or something.

I still love the fact that when she's in her real suit, she's just the suit, and gender ceases to matter.

Zero Suit Samus' boobs are pretty small. I don't see what the problem is.

+1 Maybe it was just the 2D thing, but I liked Zero Suit Samus in Fusion a lot. The transition to 3D made her another generic blonde. Sure at the end of the games depending on your speed you unlock various pictures of her, but it's something "rewarding" in a sense.

This, not so much. I just feel wrong even thinking about using her, Samus was my first character in the original Smash Bros and I used her for the most part in Melee but switched to Marth and Roy/Shiek.

Now Samus is just another "sexy' character :( I want Nintendo to be kiddy again.

Have you seen the way she moves? Shiek moved the same yes. But with what Samus is wearing it's just awkward.

I think the strongest objection is that you can take her measurements from a mile away. She was fine in MZM, but she's preposterous in Brawl.

And this is a good thing.. why?

?

Because it's pretty ****ing demeaning, dude. And it makes people involved in the industry and people who like the industry's products look bad. Seriously - you think most people think of Alyx or Jade when they think of typical game females? Not even close: it's all based on, like, the boobs of whoever the girls in DOA are.

Look at teh b00b pysix, and high heels?. Another sense of the situation if you will is just typing in "Samus" in your web browser, it was never like that.

DOA, Soul Calibur, Ninja Gaiden...The last two are actually games. But almost all their female characters are portrayed as being nothing short of whores. Even Itagaki himself said "The girls are meant to be looked at...do whatever you want. But I think people who get off to that are...creeps" or something along the lines of that.:lol

People talk about the "violence" and the "graphical nature" of M rated games and try and boycott them. Yet the way females are portrayed are not even a big deal, the industry still has a long way to go before anyone can think of putting nudity in the game as some suggested.

Do you have eyeballs in your eye sockets?

If she were a porn star, they would be tiny. But Samus isn't a porn star. She's an athletic badass. That's not saying she can't have boobs, but they have sexed her up a bit with this whole new version. It's not the Samus we have loved for years. This is new check-out-my-ass Samus. It might not be as gratuitous as most video game heroines, but it's not a black and white issue.

Hopefully most would agree with me on this one.

A VG woman shouldn't wear skirts, metal thongs(Nariko needs one,Ivy should lose it) ,high heels,or thin pieces of strips for clothing.Unless they are just sipping tea.

A VG woman should wear some kind of armor,Suitable shoes, and a average breast size.Unless they are just sipping tea.

Even though these games are fantasy like,It shouldn't mean a man's fantasy.

Edit:I worded that wrong

But why do they have to be "average"? Or "average breasted", anyways?

Why do you want to deny them their individuality? Condemn them into the mediocrity of averageness? Do you hate women? DO YOU HATE FREEDOM?!

omg. :D

Noriko is not a progressive female character in any way, shape or form.
Having some female staff amongst the developers doesn't change the fact.

The best and most believable female in games is here:

How is she different? She's thin, attractive, strong and out to save the world. That doesn't sound the opposite of any other characters in this thread.

Green lipstick?

Jade looks like someone I would know in real life, not some stylized doll. It's the clothes, the fit but not pornstar look, and just general vibe.

But what if more women were directly involved in the development of games? How would this affect the female form in gaming?

*Shudders*

Considering the state of the BBC I don't really want that to happen. Don't even want to think about it.

Think Kat Slater as the standard for grace and beauty.

Cate Archer? In the first NOLF a major part of the story is how nobody thinks she is capable because she is a woman (it's the 60s) but she ends up proving her superiors wrong and the amount of sexism towards her pisses her off heh. (although saying that they did have a steamy bathroom scene)

Jaheria from Baldur's Gate I & II is a great character, these two games have overall an excellent cast. She's the strong, intelligent and proud type and is sometimes overly self-confident... something that conflicts with her being a druid because druids must observe balance in life.

And the opposite of Jaheria must be Safana. She's a sultry thief that uses her feminine wiles to manipulate men into doing her bidding.

No, I won't mention Imoen. She's just whiny :(

So this thread is dedicated to the women in games' development. The producers, the development heads, the composers and everyone else.
Why is everyone then posting pictures of characters? Jesus, does nobody read anymore? :)

Well I did, but since everyone else was doing it, who I'm I to rock the boat?

Like I've already said it would get worse.
The last thing I want to see is a feminised game industry, it certainly hasn't improved TV at all, if anything it tends to be misandric in nature thesedays the UK, which is what happens when you let feminists be in charge of anything.

Top Gear is probably the only TV show directed towards males here. The amusing thing is you cannot be in the studio audience unless you bring a female with you. So it has to be 50/50. That is the BBC for you. Heck I used to work for the buggers.

The majority of males like action and adventure in their games, not drama.

To see a similar thing happen in the game industry would probably kill it where male interest is concerned. I'm not saying women shouldn't be involved at all, I'm saying that it shouldn't be at the cost of replacing males who generally direct their work towards the male consumer..

Women are more than capable of starting businesses, if it was profitable more of them would of directed their attention towards the gaming industry, and produced games for women.

Anyway we have the Wii now so it's all good.

Hmm.

I've been curious about Nintendo as I've always had the impression that they seem to be more "open" to having foreigners work in their company -and- get promoted.

How about women? How do women fare at NCL?

Alyx is better but it's still obvious she's created for a male audience. All the female rebels are running around a battle zone in combat gear but Alyx looks like she's going to the mall or something.

Not this shit again.

Samus used to be a pretty good female lead but now that they've sexed her up with her zero suit doppleganger she's as bad as all the rest.

She has ALWAYS been sexed up (well as sexed up as a girl can be in metroid 1's case).

Samus was and still is an awesome female lead.
