Virtual On SD!

Saw these by way of Insert Credit... seems SEGA/M2's adding a SD mode for the SEGA AGES release... makes me want a DS version! :)

You want everything on DS.

Seriously, though, that looks pretty nifty. I can't say I'm all that interested, however, as I already have VOOT for Dreamcast and I don't see how this will be any better as it is based on the original game.

Virtual On is a very technical game and I can't imagine Custom Robo would even come close to matching it...

I don't know why but for some reason I interpreted the title as virtual console on sd. As for the game haven't played it in a while but I love it and a DS version would be pretty nice.

I did not even know they were making a sega ages version. Now if we could get twinsticks for the PS2 we would be all set. I'd rather have them port VOOT though.

not really, but it is the closest there is to it on DS.

also, just because, the secret best DS mech game is Chousouju Mecha MG.

and I want Virtual On for PSP, they could easily port the Dreamcast or PS2 games to it.

Well, in my defense this one looks like it could be running on a DS chipset already. :lol

Yeah, VOOT's better in basically every way (minus the console pad conversion controls) but I still have a soft spot for the original. :D

Ugh, no. I mean they're sort of loosely similar... in the same way Ico and Ninja Gaiden could be considered loosely similar. ;)

you could just say you don't know.

The answer, coincidentally, is no.

Awesome awesome awesome.

I'm such a nerd for this series, so the Sega Ages release is a pretty huge deal. VOOT is the better game, but it's not a case of SF2 over SF or something; the original definitely has its charms.

Wii version of the arcade version plz.

2 sticks = 2 wii motes!

Go go go sega!

go go no resistance and hyper-analog control for digital input!

What is Sega Ages?

The Criterion Collection of videogames.

Why are the tranparencies messed up?
Model 2 used meshes instead of proper transparencies. Model 3 brought Alpha blending to the fold (5 bit: 32 levels of transparency).

I love the Sega Ages 2500 series.

The most recent one, Galaxy Force 2, is a great release, with beautiful cover art and an interesting arranged mode with enhanced graphics.

Edit:

Only from vol.20 or whenever Sega took it in-house. Until then it was like Simple Sega Series and 95% of the games were dire.

That is true..

Sega Ages 2500 Vol. 06: Bonanza Brothers
Sega Ages 2500 Vol. 24: Fighting Vipers
Sega Ages 2500 Vol. 25: Gunstar Heroes
Sega Ages 2500 Vol. 26: Dynamite Deka
Sega Ages 2500 Vol. 27: Panzer Dragoon
Sega Ages 2500 Vol. 29: Monster World
Sega Ages 2500 Vol. 30: Galaxy Force II

These are all the ones I have, and they're all excellent collections more then worthy of their money.. perhaps the only one that is a bit missing on the features side is Fighting Vipers.

I remember before where they were really nasty 3d remakes, what happened that made Sega realize they needed to fix their act?

It was Vol.15 iirc (Decathlete Collection). Most of the games are still farmed out too (to companies like M2, Sims, Land Ho, etc) it's just that SEGA (not D3) is overseeing it all.

Ok when I clicked on this thread I thought it was going to be some announcement about being able to play VC games stored on an SD card. Sorely disappointed.

It just occurred to me that some kind of crazy mecha game could be done with the Wiimote... first person perspective, transformations, you name it... all using say two wiimotes, one for each arm of the mech and cross pad for movement or something like that, etc.

Someone get on that.

This is based on the arcade version right?
Maybe they're just bad screenshots. =/

If it's the Saturn version though you might as well throw it in the trash. Half the frame-rate, spotty graphics all around, ugh.

And Jiji with the save. Thank you.

Yeah, it's based on the Model 2 version. I haven't played the arcade original enough to judge how close this is, but it's definitely far above the Saturn version.

Saturn (ow, my eyes bleed):

Sony/Sega: if your reading these threads....Please release Virtual On for the psn!!

This game would be awesome over psn considering how great it was on netlink.

So jiji this is rather OT but I'm guessing selectbutton is the new insertcredit forums? I just saw that same comparison while googling, images and all, in the sb forum. Not that I'm interested in coming back or anything.

Pretty much, warts and all. And with more drama! And yeah, that was me over there.

WHOA!! What platform is this sega Ages release on?! Is it going to be released in the US?! I MUST have this!! <drool>.

Yeah, too bad many missed out on one of the greatest series ever created. I'd kill for a XBLA or PSN release with Twinsticks and online play...but that'll never happen!! We're just now gettign a new Sega Rally. :(

Thanks for the info, it looks like this release and Sega's Fist of the North Star fighting game or going to make me break the bank and buy an import PS2. <shakes fist>.

Good to know. And yeah I won't be coming back. Had enough of the place when James told me not to post anymore. ****ing drama queen.

Entirely OT of course..my apologies.

Anyway it's a shame I'm cutting back on gaming or I'd be totally on this remake. The more recent Sega Ages releases have been nothing but absolute class.

my memories fail me then, I only got to play the arcade game once in my life, but I own the saturn version and played that a whole lot.

Hmm, interesting. I had a lot of fun with VOOT.

On a related note, what was so bad with Marz? And did the dual analog sticks mimic the Twin Sticks very well?

Marz:

Dumbed down control scheme.
Lots of characters but most of them were clones and suffered from balance issues.
You were pretty much screwed if your partner was killed during the round, 1 vs 2 is near-impossible to work out.
Graphically not much of an improvement over VOOT.
Embarassing story mode that goes on forever and just sucks bad.
Really isn't cut out for any sort of competitive play. A total mess.

Also it's impossible to really mimic the Twin sticks with dual analog. One of the mainstays of competitive Virtual On play is the jump cancel(Which as a VOOT player I'm sure you're aware of this move). Doing the jump cancels or any of the more difficult maneuvers on the analog pad is just asking for your thumbs to lose control and thus there goes the round.

Also unlike the analog pad the Twin Sticks actually have the triggers ON the stick. Adds a ton to playability/atmosphere.

On paper it sounds like a great idea but the execution leaves something to be desired(still better than playing the VO games on the Saturn/DC pads at least).
Marz is just worthless. Best left ignored.

Too complicated. Wii Fit

Definitely looking forward to this release. I'm a sucker for Virtual ON, and anything I could do to both get more of it in my life, as well as possibly give Sega an incentive to make a new game? Sign me up! :D

LOL, that would be nice, if they just basically went back and brought back the whole "Kids" thing that Sega used to do back in the day, and use it as the basis to create a new VO for the DS.

Plus, thanks to SRW@3, we already know that SD and VO can work together well enough...

psh, better home port of Virtual On >>>>> Anything Nintendo will do with VC. Believe.

It really is amazing how ahead of their time Model 1, 2, and 3 were. I first saw VO in arcades years after playing the Saturn version, and I was floored that it was released in 1995. Top of the line PCs in 1995 weren't even doing Quake yet. Can't expect anything less given how much the hardware cost, I'm sure.

I've always wondered about Marz. Yeah, it's a pretty bad game. Still, it's based on Force, and I'd imagine that if you could get a four-player version of Marz, it wouldn't be terribly different.

Basically, I'm wondering if Force really sucks in the first place, or if the blame should be pointed at the half-assed effort to port-tweak the game into something it isn't.

I never actually played Force but I did find a review of someone who has.

A snippet:
In 2001 the newly formed Hitmaker took over reigns of the series. gDennousenki Virtual On Forceh was a very large shift in focus for the franchise. It was four player. To facilitate this new dynamic, the dash attacks and general movement around the arena was modified. To clarify, you the player could move considerably quicker than the projectiles that were fired upon you. Instantly this negated almost any of the tactics and strategy that made Virtual On so special. Moreover the general game speed and controls responsivity was considerably lower than in previous incarnations, again not all that great considering the franchisefs historically high-speed nature. It is also important to mention that Virtual On Force runs on four Hikaru boards.

Actually that's part of his review on Marz.

Guess one could consider this the "Isuka" of the Virtual On series.

Google is a mess for trying to find info on Force. "Virtual On Force review" gets me thousands of links to Shining Force on the Virtual consoles reviews. There is a wikipedia page at least but it doesn't really have any in-depth explanation of it's good and bad points(except for the fact that it is really dumbed down)

Yeah, that's what it sounds like from that review.

But I've heard pretty positive impressions of it elsewhere, and I think it's still pretty popular in arcades these days, so who knows? :/
