I love love love the atmosphere in this movie. They did a brilliant job contrasting the wide-open vastness of the sea with the cozy warm feeling of the well-loved bath house (the girls sleeping area being my favorite).

A Prophet

Has a gorgeous palette, and that wonderful deep focus effect, stunning depth of field. And that's before you even talk of the wonderful imagery conjured up.

Sucker Punch

Seriously. The movie is questionable (I actually really enjoy it, mainly because of the visuals, partly for the hot girls in cosplay doing VG fantasies) but I think it looks gorgeous. The 50's look of Lennox House, the dream sequences each have a wonderful coherence that still feels relevant to the setting of the movie.

Speed Racer

Again, questionable movie, but the visuals are jaw dropping. So colourful! So sharp! Looking forward to Cloud Atlas.

Kick Ass

I love this movie. The comic book aesthetic is perfectly implemented. Notice all the splashes of primary colour on a lot of the frames; red sign, yellow cab, blue bin, he tries to thread these three colours through each scene as much as possible. It looks fantastic.

I went to see Dredd in 3D recently and I was really surprised how beautiful the slow motion effects were. They really complement the violence and gore in the film so that it isn't grotruetous.

Instead of mentioning more modern films with stunning cityscapes and architecture, I though I'd give props to the one that may have started it all, at least in sci-fi. Aside from being massively influential, Metropolis is still stunning and its designs, part gothic and futuristic, holds up very well. I can't look at films like Blade Runner, Dark City, The Matrix, Akira, or Ghist in the Shell without thinking of this film.

I agree. My mom hates 3D films, and this was the one where she walked away saying, well I do not know what the fuck she said but something along the lines that they used 3d correctly. She enjoyed the 3D and it was not distracting. It is a great looking film. At least my mom says so.

I recently got around to see Alien in preparation for Prometheus and I really couldn't believe how good it looked. You could take any frame from Alien and it would make an amazing wallpaper, poster or what have you.

Anyway, speaking of visuals, in a recent thread about the Matrix trilogy someone pointed that the sequels were lacking in "iconic" or memorable visuals. Speed Racer has got to be the complete opposite of that. Nearly every frame in this movie is gorgeously composed to deliver maximum awesome:

Like this scene. There, the camera pans in a way where finally the drawn gun points directly at Brody and suddenly you hear a bang. Which was just the metal door the other character slammed close.

I know, movie snobs will laugh at me for this, but I loved Monsters. I thought it was a typical alien invasion movie, but it was much more about the two charcters building a relationship and I love the really close-up filming with a blurred, soft paletted backdrop of jungles. I've seen it twice so far and that was on DVD, I recently had to pick up the blu-ray and I can't wait to see the beautiful filming on that format.

Totally agree, saw it recently on blu-ray. Stunned by how well it has held up. I've just gone through a lot of Ridley Scott movies. He really should do more sci-fi. I just love how much time is put into the enviroments in them, it feels real and not just like a fancy movie set.

I really wanted to enjoy Monsters, I'd heard great things. It bored me to tears. Barely anything happens. Such a shame. It's like it was trying to hard to be the cool indie kid, being subtle and understated. It was just too much, so fucking dull.

Scott Pilgrim vs the World-- It's layers upon layers of hyper reality stylization. It's already beautifully shot with some great camera work and framing. Then there's shifts in frame rate, mixed in with semi-transparent onomatopoeias, distortion, light effects, and so on. It's insane.
