VITA NEW MODEL Announced with built in 1GB memory!!

I'm talking about when the screen goes black in a game, there's a big stain on the screen.

Are these going to be present on the new LCD vita?

I think that's that "mura" effect. Which again, even at their lightest is still darker than LCD lol. Imagine the light part being even brighter and just covering the whole screen. It's not a "good" thing to get rid of. Better OLED displays actually shut off the pixels, but for cost reasons Sony went with cheaper Samsung OLED panels.

Still not sure exactly what shade of pink this is. Hoping it's more neon, but I'm thinking it's going to be softer than that.

You guys think it will be $200 dollars here? I would hope it would be slightly cheaper than that since they got rid of OLED.

Ahh. I see. Will probably pass on this then.

You get gray blacks instead. Yay.

Plus motion blur.

OLEDs are awesome, but with any ambient light all blacks are light blue.

LCD uses less power, can't burn in or have colors fade and give a very natural image while OLEDs tend to have an oversaturated image (though the Vita is tuned MUCH better than Samsung phones with their cartoony image and horrible whites). My Vita is also unusable in sunshine yet the lowest brightness is still way too high in the dark. I love my Vita OLED and it looks really awesome indoors, but for a general consumer I think an LCD makes more sense especially when you're not Samsung.

third picture had a purple sky on HTC one... so yeah more natural....

Well, you never know how those artistic panorama shots are meant to look but I bet it was still closer to the original vision. That widened color room is just imagination, they are adding colors because of lala so people look at it and say "wow colorz". And then they but it. It's like the McDonalds of TV, looks great, maybe even tastes great, but in it's essence and the thought behind it, it's shit.

It won't be using a Triluminous technology LCD, the thing in the new Vita will be some sort of cheap thing they could source. Just remember the varying quality of LCD used in the different PSP models.

I'm pretty disappointed until we find out what type of LCD they are putting into these things. As for now, I am considering this as a cost-cutting measure for Sony.

Isnt the patch for Killzone Mercenary bigger than a gig? Wouldnt that mean that the game would still require a memory card?

Honestly? I think it's because the technology has the word "organic" in it, it sounds cool. I mean, it's high quality but does it make that much of a difference on a such a small screen?

The big differences are

1.) Contrast Ratios. OLED gets vastly superior color spectrum compared to regular LCD's.
2.) Refresh rates, again, because of LCD's poor ability to jump between colors, you'll get this really awful blur anytime the color shifts (which is frequently in video games especially). OLED and Plasma don't have this issue.
3.) Black levels. LCD's are typically crap in this area due to the constant need of a backlight. Again something plasmas and OLED's don't have.

LCD is rubbish for gaming.

bait and switch by Sony. Not sure who they think they're going to fool, but it will not be a lot of people

With max brightness setting on both, my iphone 5 has a better display and is easier on my eyes than my vita. So I don't see what the big deal about OLED is.

Welp, glad I've got an OG White Vita. Dat OLED. ;)

Considering the button configuration is the same, I see no reason to upgrade/switch models.

I mean the retail version. So if I got this new vita model I would still require a memory card to patch and play the game.
Yeah, the patch was either 1.1 or 1.3GB. It's the only game with a patch that large though, even the WipEout 2048 update that adds the HD & Fury packs is smaller than that.

It is a step back though, new models shoud try and improve the feature set not get worse.

They improved on everything except the screen, while lowering the cost of production. I don't see the issue. If you want OLED buy a OLED model. It is just like the PS3 they release the gangbusters high quality all features built in model, then reduce cost and release a more average user model.

Yes and the 1Gb is just a piss take from Sony I don't even know why they bothered to advertise it. It amazes me the Sony can get the PS3/4 right with a non-custom HD and something the end user can swap no less to the Vita with its fucking stupid and expensive memory cards.

Finally someone who has looked at a modern LCD.

I kind of hate the tech too, but it's super mature and looks great on modern devices. An OLED is only black when it's dark and in regular light has worse contrast than an LCD because it's so reflective. AMOLED has advantages and can look really nice, but are far from perfect.

Moto X, Samsung GS3 and GS4 all use AMOLED (Active Matrix OLED, same as Vita)

I wouldnt say that LCD is rubbish. I also prefered my LCD TV for PS3 compared to my sister's plasma TV (it was an older model though, so maybe things have improved. She now has a LED TV instead). Maybe OLED and plasma is better though, but i have no complains about my LCD TV and i use it 99% for gaming.

That said, i'm very curious to see the difference in screen quality on the new and old Vita models. The first thing i thought of when i saw that the new model was going to use a LCD screen was to buy another Vita model as backup, in case my current Vita gets damaged or worn out (mostly thinking about the analog sticks regarding wear).

Man I wish the OG Vita had that ability to charge via USB and those Home, Start and Select buttons, other than that it's fine as it is.

That remains to be seen, and you will only be able to buy a OLED Vita until stocks last.

I see this a lot. What does "natural image" mean? Can it be measured? Are you talking about Rec. 709? Because any type of display can be be accurate to that standard. Has nothing to do with whether it's LCD, plasma, OLED, etc.

A deep, true black level has two benefits: one is the reproduction of black colors themselves. The other is that it allows all other colors to be more pure, more "saturated" and rich. With the LCD, colors are washed out because of the backlight.

Having said that, ditching OLED was the right move for Vita. Clearly the majority of customers don't care. And that goes for phones too. Only Samsung is using, and I suspect they wouldn't be hurt if they switched to LCD either, as evidenced by the popularity of the Active model.

Huge lose in quality, but does it matter?

3DS users seem to get by just fine.

It's a flawed comparison, the 3DS screen was never good, the awful screen is the only watermark. Imagine if they took the current 3DS, and made some revisions that dropped how many colors it could display, made it blurrier, and really brightened up the black levels.

Mang colors better come to the US
Red/Pink and Black better make it out here.

The Yellow/White is also tempting but I'd have to hear accounts from white Vita users on how theirs look after a year. My white DS lite was a nasty looking thing.

Pretty much. OLED trumps LCD in exactly those metrics most relevant for gaming.

It's so obvious that you don't have a vita lol.
People is already saying that when they'll buy a 64gb they will complain for the lack of a 128gb one, and you want to survive with a 1gb? Trololol
1gb will be used only for emergency saves when for some reason you don't have a memory inserted, that's all, dd is one of the best thing that vita can offer, there are many great dd only games, if/when you'll have a vita you will complain how fast you fill your memory card(not because all games are big, but because you'll buy many! It's the vita's curse!)
