VITA Newb/N00b Q&A

Does anybody else have an issue with their USB cable? I can't seem to get it working with Content Manager on my PS3 or my computer at the moment. It's driving me crazy.

My PS button seems to be stuck on orange even though it's not plugged in. Is that normal? I didn't notice it before. Does it mean something like low battery?

Does the retail version of Uncharted: Golden Abyss REALLY come with no instructions or inserts? Are most of the retail games like this?

What's with this brightness bullshit? Why when I play demo of Fifa or Lumines, brightness can't be set to more that something like 80%, and when I play Uncharted or Little Deviants Demo, I can set it to 100%?

Yep. All instruction manuals are digital that can be accessed from a game's LiveArea. The only insert in some games are for online passes.

  • Plug cable into Vita and PS3
  • Turn on both consoles (Or have them both on when cable is connected, I dunno :P)
  • Go to one of the game files on your PS3 that you want to copy over. Press Triangle.
  • Select 'Copy'. PS3 should now say 'Connected to PS Vita'
  • Select Content Manager on the Vita
  • Choose what media you want to copy
  • ?????
  • Profit

I took a pic last night for compaison. Here ya go.

Technically the 3DS is bigger.

Do not use the cradle when trying to content manager. It didn't work for me.

How does receiving messages work? Do I need to have the group messaging app opened and minimised? I remember seeing an option there to sync every 15 mins/30 mins/1 hour/switch off, so does that mean there may be a delay in me receiving the message because it hasn't synced yet?

All I want is to get messages the moment the other guy sends it like normal :(

Can someone explain exactly how the whole region free/lack of region free works? Can I play Japanese games on the same card as my US games without getting DLC for the Japanese ones? If I want DLC, does that mean I need another memory card? It's confusing...

How common are dead pixels and other screen defects?
Dead pixels are pretty much nonexistent. from what I know. but some people have told me their touch screens are defective. Like menu popping up without going there or not responsive.

Is there a way to stream content to a PSVita via Wi-Fi?

I use PS3 media server for my PS3 all the time to watch video content and listen to music, streamed off my desktop PC. It would be pretty rad if the Vita could do the same thing.

2 questions:

1 - this has been asked before and I'll be asking again; do PSP games have better framerates on the Vita?

2 - can the Vita play 720p MP4 videos? I tried playing a couple and the Vita said they werent compatible so I used a re-encoding program to put them at PSP resolution and they played fine.

Yes, must be something related to the way the original video was encoded. Put on an Uncharted 2 trailer earlier and plays as it's supposed to. (obviously downscaled)
1080p is a no-go though. Personally I re-encode 1080p videos at 960x540 for vita retaining the same bit/pixel ratio.

fine.
Can't help you on that one but an answer would be interesting if someone like digital foundry could do a frame analysis.

1. How to take in game screen captures.
2. OLED blotches
3. How do I get my free month of 3G and SSD?
4. Blue PS button but black screen.
5. Can't update firmware at start up with PSN account.
6. Screen protector application.
7. Can near be used without activating a 3G plan?
8. My near is broken, what can I do?
9. How do I get and play another region's game demos?
10. Is VITA an acronym? :P
11. When does Gravity Rush come out?
12. How do I delete unwanted bubbles and game demos?
13. How big is the Vita? Can it fit in my Club Nintendo DS pouch?
14. Are screen protectors really needed?
15. Transferring files and games between PS3, Vita, and PC?

How do I add wallpaper?
How do I move my apps around?

OP can you update to answer these issues.

Is there a better way to transfer music to the Vita instead of using the system to do it? Because it only gives me the option to go song by song instead of by artist. I don't want to sift through 16k songs to find stuff to add.

How are saves handled / Where are saves located?

Are they on the app like on the iPhone? in that case, does deleting them to make space erase your save data?

Didn't seem to work so I decided to reformat my system and the memory card. Now it's working. Don't know why it just stopped working when it was working yesterday :/ Thanks for answering though.

My friend had a dead pixel but they are near impossible to see. Amazon is expediting him a replacement, and sending a return code. That way he can get the replacement before having to send the original back.

Damn, so glad I ordered from Amazon as well. Dat service.

1. Is there any way to manually set the system to the start/lock screen? Or do I have to wait to see it?

2. This is a tad OT and it'll make me sound like a noob, but I'm looking to get Wi-Fi going at home. I have wired internet, but as you can imagine, that does me no good. Is something like THIS all I need if I have a wired/ethernet set up at home?

What kind of router do you use?

In for answers.

1. I'm not sure what you mean by the first question.

2. No, that is for if you have a device that only has ethernet and no wireless, so you can connect it to your wireless network. You want something like this.

Not entirely sure, it's just what the cable company gave me. I'll have to check it out when I get home. I really hope it works since I feel left out being offline only most of the time :(.

In the end it doesn't really matter anyway what you need is this to replace your old router.

edit
You don't actually need this particular model but it's great router. It's not hard to replace you own with a new model. You can pm me if you have any questions.

Okay, I was pondering this earlier - you can browse your PS3 trophies from the Vita, but are there plans in the future to enable you to do vice versa?

Make sure PS3 is turned on and at menu before you plug it in. I had this multiple times but making sure PS3 is on first always works!

Dorfdad, good idea for a thread.

I know this thread is all about the Vita, but you might want to make a small edit to this Q in the OP:
Q: How Big Is The Vita compared to the Vita?
;)

I put some awesome art on the lock screen, and I was just wondering there is a button or a touch gesture that will activate the lock screen, or if the only way to see it is to let the system idle for a certain amount of time. Not really a big deal, just curious.

JP:released UK:TBC/TBA US: May 29th

That's not confirmed though, the US Sony site still lists the US version as TBA; it's Amazon that put the May 29th date on it.

And I don't believe Sony is gonna release Gravity Rush (which is still TBA) AND Resistance (confirmed for May 29th) on the same day, that just seems stupid.

Well, I mean, you can just tap the power button and then tap it again. It's pretty much instantaneous.

Some people on my friends list have cool images in their profile bar thingies, how do I add one to mine?

Settings/Playstation Network/Account Information/Panel

When/how can I use my Macbook to put videos and music on my Vita?

Go here and download the Mac Content Manager. Plug your Vita into your computer. The Content Manager app on your Vita will begin bouncing. You then transfer to and from your computer from the Vita.
