Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | August 2013 | Divekicks & Dragons

I said this in Vita threads many time before today's 2DS announcement, Sony need to offer a cheaper version of Vita.

they need to make a 2nd version of Vita with smaller and regular ass LCD screen and cheaper form factor for $150 or less and Sony will reach many news people with it and if someone want the better Vita then they also can, not sure why Sony didn't went with this already since Samsung offers tons of version of Galaxy and Nintendo know that price is the most important thing for the handheld market.

What are they going to do to make it cheaper besides the screen change? The OLED is only a small percentage of the price, and it's not like they can downgrade the CPU/GPU.

Spelunky is damn hard, but it's a lot of fun. The replay value makes it perfect for the Vita.

Get my 32GB card in the mail tomorrow. Will be cool to actually be able to fit some music on the system. You can play your own music over a game's regular soundtrack, right?

No it doesn't.

I dunno, the new version just looks too much like a Flash game to me.

well oled/super amoled+ are still very expensive type of mobile screens, so Sony can have smaller sized (lets say 3.5'') tft lcd, beside that cheap materials all over (no plastic coated, glossy stuff) one speaker, smaller battery..ect this will do for an alternative and cheaper version. just called it Vita Ace ;)

you be trollin'

you hate pixel art now?

Whaaaa? Really? That's great, does it have to be in some strange format or does mp3s work?

MP3s work. During my hours of Soul Sacrifice grinding I downloaded and listened to a podcast in the background, it's great.

Although for a lazier method I grabbed a male to male 3.5mm audio cable, plugged it from my vita into the Mic port on my PC and can listen to both my Vita and PC audio at the same time.

Sweet! Dare I hope it work on PSP and PS1 games too?

Just tried Jak & Daxter collection on Vita. Never played a Jak game before although I did quite like Daxter for PSP. Anyway I had a go of Jak 1. Worst Naughty Dog game ever. Hate it. It seems to run ok though, although I obviously don't know how it compares to the original version or the PS3 collection. Very bland platforming, it's pretty boring so far and I generally prefer my platformers to be more linear than this. I miss when Naughty Dog made Crash Bandicoot. Now that was a good focused platforming series. After playing this I have more of an urge to play one of the Crash games on my Vita than I'm ever likely to want to play more of this game. This game will probably be deleted from my Vita very soon.

i agree - played J+D on ps2 and couldn't stomach it. thought it was clunky and bland platformer. ugly art direction.

So I have 12.39 in my wallet....

Do i get Splunky or Dragons book and Skull girls ??

i don't own any of them. but just based off hearsay, spelunky - unless you prefer fighting games.. then skullgirls.

If you think Jak isn't linear, I hope you never touch Jak 2.

Real Boxing works well but stays quite basic. If you're a boxing fan you can buy it, other may as well wait for a sale as 10 euros is probably expensive for what it is. If you have question, I'll try my best to answer.

>Using bilinear filtering on a 2D, sprite based game

You're killing me here.
Depends on what you mean by sprite based games.

Games with pixel-art sprites (like Tactics Ogre, especially with the camera zoomed out)? No. I actually had a similar discussion about this with another GAFfer a year ago: link

But on 2D games, or 3D games with 2D stuff (i.e. Persona 3 Portable characters during cutscenes) it does the job.

Of course it's not comparable to a proper antialiasing for 3D games.

Great idea, maybe Sony can call it la poveri vita, sales would just skyrocket!

I'm not trolling. I legitimately think the sprite version looks better.

I like sprites and all, but having played both now I like the look of the Vita one way better. It's very charming.

An option for the sprite version art style would be cool though.

Thanks for the impressions. How's the framerate?

I guess different strokes for different people. I don't think you are trolling here. As for me, i loved the new art style and don't think the old one is bad. It would have been cool to have the old one available in this new remake though.

How is one supposed to deal with the piranha plants in the jungle of spelunky?
Also any general tips for the ice caves?

Yeah, I'd like some tips for stuff too. Having trouble with the piranha plants right now.

Edit: WOW, I just realized that the developers of Vita version of Spelunky (not Derek Yu himself) disabled custom soundtracks for the game. This is one of like less than 5 games total to do this. Morons. For games without a story that I'm planning on just relaxing and playing for awhile, custom soundtracks is invaluable to me. Can't believe they disabled it.

Vita has a very feature rich OS. It would be the best if each feature wasn't hampered by some form of odd implementation. See below; they're generally minor grievances but they're enough to fragment the experience (this has been fixed to a degree).
Yes, except for streaming music when games shut off the internet connection (I still HATE this).
That's not too bad--a shame but better than nothing. I'm just glad to have the custom sound track feature.
