Vsync on or off?

So, I was playing Spec Ops just now, and was hitting 90-100 frames per second, although the game was tearing here and there, and diluted the experience. Had to switch Vsync on, and was then getting constant 60 fps. What do you people prefer? Vsync on or off? I'm new to pc gaming so I don't know much about this tech. Does it hamper the performance of the game in other areas other than frames? Also, how does one get rid not this menace that is screen tearing?

Keyboard and mouse = off
Gamepad = on

I think it has to do with the fact that controller inherently have a bit of delay in the sticks - the time it takes for the stick to move from the center to the edge - but I just don't notice the delay as much when playing with a gamepad.

If your GPU can hold a FPS constantly over 60 in the game, turn Vsync on. Otherwise, turn it off.
You don't want to lock the game to 30 FPS if you can get 45-50 FPS wtih Vsync off.
I've just played through FC3 and Blood Dragon with Vsync off, getting around 50FPS maxed out with my GTX 760. Tearing wasn't an issue, but I realize it can be very prominent in some games when Vsync is off.

Since my earlier days I noticed massive lag/input delay with it on. With that said, I've always kept VSync off for that reason. Gameplay response > No tearing screens

I've also noticed that VSync On/Triple(Double) Buffer options in some engines give the best of both worlds as it "feels" responsive and less screen tearing so I'm torn if I should change my ways.

OFF + D3Doverrider, usually.

ALWAYS OFF

I use a 144Hz monitor though. The lag is terrible with v-sync (db and triple buffered) and screen tearing is barely noticeable on my screen anyway

Always on, especially with tripple buffering.

And I have to wonder what pc specs you have if you get noticable lag with v-sync on since I don't notice any with my high end PC.

Can't wait till both vendors have a widespread solution to this madness. Someday, we'll look at VSync issues much the same way we do blue screens.

off.
Input delay is the WORST.

On, on, on, ALWAYS on.

Fuck screen tearing.

I hate screen tearing, but also hate input delay.

I've started to turn it off more but I really need a better solution. Gsync could do it.

Input lag on or off is the better question, bit of a no brainer unless it's a turn based game or rts or something.

Disabling vsync doesn't magically give you an infinite refresh rate, frames are still only being pushed out at 60, 120, 144Hz, or what have you. With vsync they're just whole frames.

Can't wait for Gsync.
Well, can't wait to be able to afford it as a luxury, more specifically.

Depends on how badly it affects mouse movement. If it's bareable/unnoticeable, I'll have it on. If tearing isn't noticed, i'll leave it off.

What I'm getting from this thread is that I should turn Vsync on for games where my framerate is consistently over 60fps and leave it off for everything else.

Outside of some extreme cases like in Dead Space I think it was, the actual input lag with vsync is negligible.

Oh my god you have awakened the worst input lag memories with the Dead Space PC port. I thought I have forgotten, but NO. That experience was soul crushing

It's like choosing between the devil and the deep blue sea
I can't wait for VESA adaptive sync to free us from this predicament.

Holy, I thought it was just me.

THIS was the game that forever cemented me in VSync Off. It was SOOOOO bad, like how could you NOT notice it.

It's pretty much what's going on with me. Some of the games I mentioned are giving me 60 plus, and in the 100-120 range. My monitor's refresh rate is 60 hz I believe, so it cannot stand it, which then results in tearing during cutscenes mainly. It's very annoying.

If, however, the frames get locked to 30 fps, we might have a problem. Hasn't happened yet as Spec Ops gets capped to 60 fps which is more than enough for me.

I have 120hz monitor and I prefer it off at all times.

I tend to have framerates where it is more important for the game to be smooth rather than have the top 20% of the screen occassionaly show a line.

V-Sync definitely always on, but always with triple buffering.

If game does not support either or both, then I force it via D3D Overrider, drivers, or by playing in borderless windowed mode.

On. Tearing is a nightmare, the should be a law that made it illegal to release console games with tearing (at least on PC you get to fix it).

All three DS games had horrible VSync implementation (=lock to 30fps console style), but all three played perfectly with vsynced 60fps forced through drivers.

Console-style vsync with a 30 FPS cap would have been playable, but they did something that had ungodly frame pacing issues and an enormous amount input lag. Calling it console-style is an insult to consoles.

Depends on the game.

I have adaptive v-sync enabled globally via the NVIDIA control panel and then I essentially just add exceptions to specific games, where I may disable it, or force triple buffering, etc.

Games like Counter-strike, I have vsync completely off and then cap my framerate at 131fps, just because I found that to pretty much eliminate visible tearing (i'm sure it's happening, but I don't notice it).
