I'm a project manager on graphic design stuff and we work with a lot of Scandinavian companies.

This is very accurate.

There is something magical about Sweden. Not even sure why, I've never even been there. But it has an aura of the Promised Land. Everything is cool in Sweden.

Unfortunately the language is total garbage or I'd consider moving there.

Social justice in lagom amount!

"That's so very nice of you! That's so good for her. My mother hasn't had a very active sex life recently. I thought you were angry with me."

lol

lol

Also Sweden is a very racist country, but almost all countries (probably all?) are.

Very racist? Not really. As someone said earlier, there's -some- casual xenophobia, mostly among the older generations, and in some parts in younger if they've grown up in a very "segregated" Swedish only community.

Holy crap they are like they are like Europes Canadians! They seem like cool peoples.

Aren't Canadians, more like North American Swedes then?

Wait, even working?

Because I seriously want to move to Sweden eventually and my slow shitty learning of the language is the biggest barrier.

It will surely depend a bit on the profession, but where I work we essentially only speak English since we have many international workers.

You will be able to communicate just fine with pretty much everyone you meet in English, but of course the "official" language at workplaces is typically Swedish. This probably depends on what field you want to work in. Many places I'm sure wouldn't mind hiring someone who only speaks English.

lol

Nah, that's bullshit. There's some of that, sure, but it's not what's typical at all.

Same here, and if you live in a major city like Stockholm I'd be very surprised if you could find anyone where a conversation in English is too difficult to handle. Maybe some older people, but even then it's more pronunciation and a lack of vocabulary rather than lack of understanding.

You can't work in Sweden if you can't speak Swedish, though (outside academia of course).

What? Outside academia i.e. the entire job market? I'd say 40% of the company I work at can't speak Swedish, and they do perfectly fine in Stockholm.

Ironic how people that speak English gets a pass while people from Africa, the middle east, Romania etc don't.

If you're planning to stay: learn the language.

I'd say the most important thing is to be able to make yourself understood. And pretty much every Swede under the age of 70 or something understands English perfectly fine. Not so with any other language (except Swedish, duh). But yeah, if you're planning to stay here, you should of course start working on your Swedish.

What a load of bullshit. Hell, it seems even half the waiters you get at popular restaurants in Stockholm only speak English.

Stockholm isn't a measure of how Sweden is as a whole though, never encountered an English speaking waiter in restaurants in Gothenburg.

- A party with a racist ideology just got 12,84 % in the general election.
- There was almost 4000 xenophobic hate crimes reported in 2013.
- In 2012, approximately 106 000 persons were victims to 184 000 xenophobic hate crimes. (source)
- If you have a Swedish name, you have a 50 % higher chance than someone with with an Arabic name of getting a job interview. (source)

These are just some examples of racism in Sweden, and even though racism is one of the biggest problems in Sweden today, it was barely mentioned in any debate before the election.

But I guess that's just "some casual xenophobia", smh.

I fucking love Sweden but their system is doomed imho. It's based on equality but it only works because they have such a small homogenous population. I think that will be really hard to preserve in the future.

I havent encountered one person under 40 that can't engage in a English discussion.

No. Learn swedish.
I work in Finance, generally reconciliations, settlements etc.

My mate from high school works at Stockholm University(He studied there too) and I have a standing offer to stay with him for awhile. I've got over £10k saved up to get me started.

I have a very very basic understanding of Swedish that I work on in my spare time online because there aren't really any courses near me plus scheduling conflicts.

There are definitely some pubs in Gothenburg where on some nights you exclusively get British bartenders and waiters.

Wow.

Spot on.
