WaPo: CIA director distorts intelligence community’s findings on Russian interference

CIA Director Mike Pompeo declared Thursday that U.S. intelligence agencies had determined that Russia’s interference in the 2016 American presidential election did not alter the outcome, a statement that distorted spy agency findings.

“The intelligence community’s assessment is that the Russian meddling that took place did not affect the outcome of the election,” Pompeo said during an appearance at a security conference in Washington.

His comment suggested, falsely, that a report released by U.S. intelligence agencies in January had ruled out any impact that could be attributed to a covert Russian interference campaign that involved leaks of tens of thousands of stolen emails, the flooding of social media sites with false claims and the purchase of ads on Facebook.

A report compiled by the CIA and other agencies described that Russian operation as unprecedented in scale, and concluded that Moscow’s aims were to undermine public faith in the U.S. democratic process and help elect Donald Trump.

But the report reached no conclusions about whether that interference had altered the outcome — an issue that U.S. intelligence officials made clear was considered beyond the scope of their inquiry.

“We did not make an assessment of the impact that Russian activities had on the outcome of the 2016 election,” the report said. U.S. spy agencies are “charged with monitoring and assessing the intentions, capabilities, and actions of foreign actors,” the report said, but do “not analyze U.S. political processes or U.S. public opinion.”

Former U.S. intelligence officials voiced concern over Pompeo’s statement.

“This is another example of Pompeo politicizing intelligence,” a former senior U.S. intelligence official said. Pompeo “is the most political CIA director since Bill Casey” during the Reagan administration, the former official said. “This significantly undermines the intellignece community’s credibility.”

The statement might as well hve come straight from the Kremlin. Shit, any official government statement or release nowadays has black caviar all over it.

Raise your hand if you didn't expect this.

Anyone? Nobody?

It's not really surprising - there have been concerns about Pompeo politicizing his role before and the Washington Post had an article back in July or August about how people in the CIA weren't entirely confident in him.

If he's saying this shit publicly just imagine the shit he's pulling behind the scenes.

He still can't do anything to the Mueller investigation, though.

Fuck. Mueller needs to start dropping bombs or someone needs to start leaking them to the press. I’m starting to even doubt manafort or Flynn will be indicted, much less any fall out leading to a trump impeachment. I know this takes time, etc, but the wait is killing me.

Did you listen to Pompeo during the original hearings? Dude coddled Trump's balls as if it were his job description. He does not have our best interests in mind.

Here's the deal, though: They can undermine the credibility in the public eye all they want. That doesn't change facts that the intelligence community in the U.S. and around the world are finding about this case.

You're right that it doesn't change that. It also does noting to stop it from happening again. Trump's fragile ego is more important than our election integrity. So long as GOP wins they don't give a shit.

I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if mueller drops a shit ton of impeachable dirt and the GOP will just shrug it off as partisan/fake intelligence. The trumpets will eat it up and they know it. Watch it happen.

I went to my grandmas funeral in South Dakota earlier this weak and the willful ignorance and blind defense of trump over there is frankly startling. Somewhere between 25-50% of the country is like that too. It’s frightening. Fox News and conservative radio are probably the worst things that have ever happened to this country.

The only assessment that matters is that of our infallible dear leader President Trump. Prayers for his continued blessings and god-fearing leadership.

The pleas for Mueller to save us are getting a lite old. He could find nothing worth acting on, or only collect enough damning evidence after Trump finishes his second term.

Cheering his investigation is no substitute for calling your representatives.

Our CIA director may as well be a Russian puppet.

That is a mind-boggling thought.

He's not a Russian stooge. He's saying this because saying anything else would probably cause him to lose his job. So it's fair to say that his courage level is somewhere below Comey's.

If you honestly expected any of these Russia investigation findings to end up getting Trump impeached I've got a bridge to sell you. No matter what they find it'll just end up like this.

They're not done.

The CIA said on Thursday that the U.S. intelligence community has not reached new conclusions on Russian efforts to interfere in the 2016 election, hours after the agency's director, Mike Pompeo, said that intelligence agencies had determined that the meddling had no effect on the results.

“The intelligence assessment with regard to Russian election meddling has not changed,” Ryan Trapani, a CIA spokesman, told The Washington Post, “and the director did not intend to suggest that it had.”

"We did not make an assessment of the impact that Russian activities had on the outcome of the 2016 election," the report reads. "The US Intelligence Community is charged with monitoring and assessing the intentions, capabilities, and actions of foreign actors; it does not analyze US political processes or US public opinion."
