Warhammer 40K Dawn of War 2 multiplayer beta

New update detailed:
DAWN OF WAR II BETA UPDATE

Some of you have noted that we updated DOW II today. Here is the deal:

Relic is really excited that the Beta is finally available and the initial response has been great. Even during this exclusive period, we are receiving a tremendous amount of quantitative and qualitative feedback and believe us, we’re listening. Through your forum posts and automated reports, we’ve identified a lot of previously unreported bugs, compatibility problems and balance suggestions. Some of these issues can be addressed immediately in the Beta (I’m looking at you Tier 3 Tyranid crash!) while others will be addressed with the launch of the final game.

Some of the Beta updates we’ve already made include:

• Support for languages other than English, French, German and Spanish
• Eliminating the most frequent gameplay crash that resulted from playing as Tyranids and reaching Tier 3
• Unlocking the camera controls so players can zoom right in on the action like Company of Heroes
• Improved targeting against Tyranid Spore Mines

• Improved logging for identifying crashes and compatibility problems

We really appreciate your participation and understanding. Through this Beta we are going to really improve the quality of the final game from a performance and balance perspective. We couldn’t do it without your co-operation.

Many of you are probably wondering about balance updates and if any are forthcoming. We are looking at the balance feedback and match results very closely, but the Beta has only been live for three days so making any balance changes now is a bit premature. We would like to let the current multiplayer balance cook for a little while longer before putting something else in the oven. 

PS: As of right now, 237,185 DOW II BETA games have been played! That is an amazing number, bring on the 1 million mark!

The Relic DOWII Team
Damn, watch my IMBA Mines drop like flies now.:lol

Had some great back and forth matches tonight. The more people are learning the game, the better the matches become.

kind of getting the same feeling. I like it, but wish there was more...if that makes sense.

I am curious what makes it shallow so far?(I haven't played the demo yet)
is it because it feels like COH with a different coat of paint?

DoW2 feels pretty shallow so far. Relic's take on RTS-lite?
That was my impression at first, but the game's deeper than that. Definitely shallow in comparison to CoH, but mainly because of the lack of emphasis on cover/suppression.

No, its like they put enough CoH in to give it that flavor, but took out all the depth behind it. There's no base building, VP and APs can be traded at a whim, tech advancement is very quick and the unit cap is low. Cover and suppression are there but are marginalized. I think those looking for CoH in Space or even a direct sequel to the first DOW will be disappointed. It is a much different game, can't say if it's something that will stick yet.

All I'm going to say is wow at how shitty this games performance is. My HD M3650 and core 2 duo can barely avg 20fps in a 1 on 1 game with mostly low-medium settings. (the exception being textures and model detail) With all low settings I only avg 30fps flat on the startup screen. whoever said this game is extremely optimized is fucking crazy.

fix your computer, the game doesn't run poorly.

p.s. you're playing games on a laptop, don't complain about performance on a message board ever

love, druz

Warp Spider Exarch commander's knockdown wargear ability is superpowered. It's pretty much a guaranteed kill if you use it, since it does a knockdown immediately after the enemy gets up, can't escape or retreat at all. Did a 1v1 against Tre and he was like "......................................." after the fifth time or so I killed his commander.

Does anyone know if capture points across a team are shared for resources? I know that you can build power gens on an allies energy point, but what about just regular requisition? I couldn't really tell in the games I've played so far.

Well I think I've decided to put my pre-order RTS money on Empire Total War instead of DoW2.

I'm not a Warhammer fan though, so take it as you will.

I gave the wrong Steam name earlier. It's Kevin_Jack2.0, not kevinj44.

Which Core 2 Duo, and what resolution are you running? Also, texture detail is what will kill your card the fastest. If that's on high, we've found your issue. The Mobility 3650 is pretty much the lowest card that can play this game, so you'll need to use low and medium, with 1024x640 or maybe 1280x800.

Texture detail should only affect performance if your card doesn't have enough memory.

Knockdown in general is brutal. Shotty-equipped scouts brutalise just about every other kind of T1 infantry.

T5750 I believe and my res is at 1280x800

I seem to have fixed the issue pretty much, 1st vsync is automatically set to on and can only be disabled using ati tools, and 2nd, my manufacturer(dell) lowered the engine speed of the gpu to about 150mhz or so below what the the speed is actually supposed to be. i'm now hovering around the mid high 20's with the same settings i talked about before. i could potentially get more frames if i update my drivers to the the last version that came out in december(mines the one that released in november)

Yeah, I just did this to someone in my last game. It uses energy for every shot, but by the time your energy is used up, their commander is pretty much dead.

Yes, and 256MB of video memory isn't enough for comfortably setting textures to High.

Stupid confirmation e-mail isn't going to make it in time for me to get a key. Maybe Fileplanet will have a key giveaway soon.

EDIT: Got one with 57 keys remaining!

The game isn't optimized yet, there is supposed to be a noticeable improvement from beta to release according to Relic. The beta client is apparently a month old and if they were to implement the optimization changes, it would have delayed the beta.

I'm not feeling Space Marines, the support units are fairly awesome but the Tac marines really don't have enough power to be a bread and butter unit, they've got a lot of health but just don't do enough damage, shotgun scouts are all round better value.

Out of all the armies I think Space Marine must be the most punishing to play, everything's so expensive - if you lose a unit that's pretty much it.

I've come to the conclusion that I will be buying DOWII for the campaign/comp stomp with friends. I just don't think I care to play this game on a competitive level, since victory point matches feel incredibly one-sided. Either you/your team are raping, or you're being raped. There's really no middle ground. That's just MY experience/thoughts, and I'm sure some people have had matches that were even. In any case, if you don't want to play a match that ends in like 5min, you have to play annihilation, which takes FOREVER. I feel like DC had the perfect speed and pace in the series, and that DOWII is taking it back to vanilla DOW speed.

oh wow, the game rocks. i'm not a hardcore rts player by any means, i can barely tell what any of you are saying in your posts :P i also hated dow 1, but we've been playing 3v3 comp stomp on hard and i'm loving it

went from, will probably never buy it, to buy it when it gets cheaper, to day one can't wait until its out :)

I've already alleviated most of my FPS issues from my last post I explained, but if the final version of the game will indeed be more optimized than the beta that'd be great. I wouldn't count on it though, as I've been in plenty of beta's and whenever a dev talks about optimization coming in the final release,(I'm looking at you crysis beta) it's almost always complete bullshit and performance stays exactly the same.

SupCom, on the other hand, got a performance patch that doubled the framerates for a lot of people. It just depends on the dev.

I played the demo for about 2 hours and I gotta say... I 'm not really feeling this point-capturing gameplay at all. It does make it feel like RTS lite like someone mentioned before.

Oh and why do the Tyranids feel so slow and rigid? I played Starcraft II at Blizzcon for 20 minutes and the Zerg feels and looks a lot more, I don't know, swarmy? (lol)

I will give it another chance later tonight and go with the Orkz, but I gotta admit I'm just not that impressed thus far.

I'm sure there's got to be more options within the gameplay in terms of units, upgrades, e and play types with the real deal. I hope.

Starcraft was my favorite RTS up until Dawn of Wars release. I loved CoH even more. I have never played these games competitively. All were for enjoyment. TBH, I was not really looking forward to this game until my friend started to hype me up for it.

After playing about half a dozen games I must say that I love the game so far. At first I was really apprehensive, it took me a while to get acclimated. But, now I must say that I'm impressed. Eldar are more my playstyle right now, but I'm genuinely interested in putting time in on the other races. Pre-ordering when I have the chance.

Nah, I doubt it. They'll likely scale with the expansion releases. I have NO problem with how they did Dawn of War ->Soulstorm outside of Winter Assault, which felt very lackluster in terms of additions. I just want to play as IG and have more story campaigns. I hated the way Relic just dropped the idea of having a linear story like the original DOW with the expansions, and I'm glad it's coming back this time. Hopefully it sticks.

I'm warming up to the Space Marines. Can keep the pressure up with my medic hero and such. I'd love to see the Necrons in the next expansion though. Was my favorite race to play.

I'm trying to figure out the Tac marines myself. The cost makes sense when you get to tier two and can turn them into powerhouses but I don't find them super effective for their cost at tier one.

It does make it feel like RTS lite like someone mentioned before.
I understand that impression, but rather than lite, for me, it feels focused. I've never been able to properly juggle base expansion and maintenance, economies and combat in traditional RTSs. All I need to worry about in DOW2 is the combat, and it's a heap of fun.

I haven't touched the Tyranids yet, but the Orkz feel really swarmy to me. Hopefully you'll dig them.

seems like the people not liking it are the hardcore rts players, if this is rts lite then count me in. i haven't got the ridiculous amounts of time needed to master the supcoms and coh's of the genre, this'll do fine for me :D

Tyranids can be swarmy in some situations, like in this video around 1:00

That's a lot of units =O

My friend has 2 keys he wants to give out to GAF people (he's not approved for posting yet I guess), and I have too much to play now, so here:

I said 2, but here's 3, since he said one of them was already used but he's not sure which:

ZTL2E-BGGW6-K6KNQ-PHPSY-FCJRA
ZTL2E-AZNPE-8HJ3A-NTFX3-IB4YF
ZTL2E-A5ENG-7QXCN-E34AL-N8F7Y

If none of them work, tell me and I'll yell at him and etc. Post if you take them so people know.
