Good joke.....no seriously though its original. And not completely irritating in anyway whatsoever.

I made a joke a few months ago that the Warhawk servers will be PS3's with extra cooling/fans....:lol

Holy lord. Well, aren't there some games that do that for XBL?

Unreal Championship on the Xbox did the exact same thing. Though their commitment to hosting Xboxs as dedicated servers was questionable. I seem to remember it was a relatively small number that they shut down as more players started appearing online frequently. I used to leave my Xbox on running a UC server quite frequently. Don't know why, I hated that game. I guess I bought the thing so was just trying to make it useful in some way.

If anything proves their dedication to this game being a success...this does. I love that they went with PS3s as their sole architecture - even on the Sony server-side. That really bodes well for those of us that are excited to host our own matches, etc.

That's cool. I hope to see some similar pics for Halo 3 dedicated servers in September.

I don't think they'll use PS3's for Halo 3, but hey, you never know.

That's pretty awesome.

I'd love to see the network admins having to run and maintain a cluster of Xbox 360 :D

that would be called a dance club, with flashing red lights.

PS3 has now officially blown me away, @ 4 AM i was charging my controller upstairs @ usb on pc, ps3 is downstairs, i always have a cloth on my ps3 when i dont use it so it doesnt atracts as much dust, i accidentally touched the ps button without knowing and went to sleep.

8 hours later my ps3 made an airplane noise. i turned it off panicking, and wait 2 hours. turned it on, and to my surprise it still works, ive been playing for a day and a half now and i notice no damage at all. holy fuck thats impressive imo. But i now turn it off @ the back when i dont play, just to be sure :lol

that's actually pretty funny to me.

i wonder if they'll just keep using the current console they have to power their servers. i guess it'd sort of make sense in a way...but i can't imagine them staying with all ps3s 5 years from now or whatever

I guess the rumors of hosting your own PC server aren't happening... :lol
What there were never rumors of hosting your own PC server for this game. Its always been dedicate your PS3 as a server or play on your PS3 while your hosting as a server.
I think your thinking of UT3?

I said SIMILAR pics.

Then again, maybe the power of the PS3 could help Halo 3 finally trump Timesplitters.

Oh :lol i was still trying to figure it out actually.

I need to level up my Intelligence .

Someone please price a server allready.

Not only that, but it also shows their commitment to the "open" architecture of Warhawk. Even Sony's servers are PS3s.

bigger then the ps3, it was kinda closed off you could say, it covered the whole ps3 @ sides/front/back

i thanked god that it still works.

Let's start with water that doesn't look like it's being controlled by some lunar module in the fuckin' sky, okay?

Wouldn't it be cheaper without using PS3s?
Keeps the production lines busy. Costs a fortune to shut them down and start them up, buy allocation etc etc.

Oh and this is very cool. Microsoft should feel real shame when they see these pics.

No kidding. Maybe we'll finally get water that doesn't flow in a pattern.

I'm not familiar with any other rack-mounted server solutions that would be significantly cheaper than a rack of PS3s, even if off-the-shelf PS3s aren't necessarily the most ideally configured to be servers. Not to mention the PS3s would have been purchased at cost. Given that they're being used in a dedicated fashion for one game, it's probably the most economical solution in that context.

It probably has the advantage of keeping their server codebase fairly unified across user and hosted instances, as well.

Well since sony makes these and probably has warehouses of them to spare it makes sense to use PS3s as servers.

The Warhawk IGS method means that instead of us forcing players to be connected to the SONY “mothership” for any and all games, we instead let players host their own servers on their own PS3s. This is fairly unique and it enables a couple of really nice benefits.

Could just be using the games server hosting option. Ease of use FTW! Who has an extra PS3 laying around and a fiber link at work?

Yes it would be. A ~$2000 HP DL380 G4 Server might cost more then the PS3. But it's not like you'd need a server per game. One of those servers could easily handle 5 games, probably closer to 10.

8 hrs? I left it folding for 3-4 days, like 20x so far and nothing ever happened...

I think he was more worried because there was cloth on it while it was powered up.

Umm the 360 requires towels not the PS3! Just in case you didn't know!:D

Roger, that. It wouldn't take too much porting cost to wind up swamping any savings on commodity Intel/AMD servers, particularly if the Warhawk server engine is split up to run on the SPUs.

I wonder why each "blade" in the rack has to be connected with TWO USB cables, and not just one...external storage, I presume?

Looks like 150 PS3s there. (Two-sided rack) Wish Team GAF had one of those for Folding @ Home!

Erm, correct me if I'm wrong, but I just looked up this model number and the server seems to have a single Xeon processor. How would that even keep up with a single PS3 -- not to mention 5 of them?

The servers they use at some of the places I have worked are EXTREMELY expensive. A lot more cash than their desktop counterparts.

Also places like this: Terrasoft Solutions are selling PS3 clusters as cheap supercomputers.
