Warhawk PS3 dedicated server cluster - Awesome display

As long as you were on the dedicated servers it was lagfree (I was playing from Australia even). I had lag on certain user hosted servers though.
I never had anything close to a lag-free game, even on servers.

Erm, correct me if I'm wrong, but I just looked up this model number and the server seems to have a single Xeon processor. How would that even keep up with a single PS3 -- not to mention 5 of them?
You can have more then 1 processor in them. 2 might be the max, but I know the earlier generations supported more. 12 gigabyte max RAM, is also a lot more then the 256mb you get with the PS3. Not to mention the complete fault tolerancy you get from a server system.

PS3 has now officially blown me away, @ 4 AM i was charging my controller upstairs @ usb on pc, ps3 is downstairs, i always have a cloth on my ps3 when i dont use it so it doesnt atracts as much dust, i accidentally touched the ps button without knowing and went to sleep.

8 hours later my ps3 made an airplane noise. i turned it off panicking, and wait 2 hours. turned it on, and to my surprise it still works, ive been playing for a day and a half now and i notice no damage at all. holy fuck thats impressive imo. But i now turn it off @ the back when i dont play, just to be sure :lol

Apparently a little known fact but the PS3 has built-in overheat protection. The system will beep and turn itself off before any overheating damage is done. If it gets to that point, it will not turn on again until it cools down.

People who have had their PS3 die on GAF (all 5 or 6 of them) have mostly had bad Blu-Ray drives and one person's power supply bit the dust. No overheating.

My PS3 has been on for a little over four months straight now. Not under a cloth though. :)

So you know what I'm talking about right :D
Ya your right, it may cost that much. However, a single unit can host more then 1 game. So the upfront cost comparison isn't really valid. Fault tolerancy is the issue here. Say the power supply dies in the PS3 server. That server is completely down, until they either replace the whole unit or get a new power supply in there. A server that costs $2-5 should have redundant power supplies and will not go down if a power supply dies...or if a hard drive dies...or if a stick of ram goes bad...etc etc

That's cool. I hope to see some similar pics for Halo 3 dedicated servers in September.
Given the P2P nature of the Beta, I'm not holding my breath for those pics to show up. :(

Dedicated servers such as these are awesome, and Sony deserves a massive amount of credit for setting them up. I'd give my left nut for dedicated servers on Halo 3.

Don't most electronics do this? PCs, at least, have been doing it for as long as I can remember.

Highend electronics do it, well most at least. Some PC's do it and that's because the motherboard has either a temp sensor trigger/fail safe, a lot of cheaper motherboards don't have these. The 360 sure as hell doesn't have one.

wow, then i wonder what it takes to make it overheat and beep, it didnt even do that but it had the loudest noise i ever heard a fan make, it was in dimmed sleep mode @ xmb, luckily i didnt have any heavy games running :D

Good to see Sony is taking the online gameplay seriously. And not half-assed seriously, but actually going the extra mile to do it right.

What there were never rumors of hosting your own PC server for this game. Its always been dedicate your PS3 as a server or play on your PS3 while your hosting as a server.
I think your thinking of UT3?

The ability to host your own PC server was a feature some beta users were asking for in the boards.

Oh.
Just because people asked for it on the beta boards doesnt mean it was going to come to fruition.

Yeah, I know. I'm actually surprised at the amount of feedback/suggestions they took from the beta boards and decided to implement into the final game.
