I take a loooong time to brake, and I brake very gently. My ex would always get on the brakes later than I would and I would sometimes do that same sort of thing. I would apologize for it because I knew it was rude, but it's sometimes difficult not to do if someone has a very different driving behavior from you.

If he just does it all the time, though, throw him out of the car.

funny as hell, sure. Rude as hell? I dunno. For real, in situations like that, where I'm fearing the driver, I'll either drive or follow you in my car.

I dated a girl and first time she picked me up, she was a look/talker. I had to break it down to her, talk to me, but look at the road. She was also a gesticulator. Then again, my best bro is the same way, and my oldest ex used to fix cars and do doughnuts in parking lots (and people's front lawns) for fun.

Next time he does it, unbuckle his seatbelt and stop short. Some habits can be unlearned.
 
I'd say my wife and I are split about 70/30 in terms of driving, with me being the larger portion. On road trips it is more like 95/5 in my favor, she doesn't like to drive in unfamiliar places so I don't make her.
 
I drive on dates and during inclement weather. She drives most of the other time.

Mainly this is because she gets motion sick if I drive.

Naw. The only time it's ever been an issue is when people were being particularly shitty on the roads and she pulled over and asked me to drive because she was getting stressed out.

As far as I know, it's never been a social thing for the men to drive. My mom drove just as often as my dad. Usually it was just a choice of who's car was being used.
 
My wife refuses to drive if she can get me to do it.

I used to not mind much because she was the embodiment of the Asian female driver stereotype, but in the eight years we've been together she's become a good driver with experience and now it's a bit annoying that I'm always the one that has to do the driving.

Can't blame her though. Driving is stressful and tiring.
 
I guess those ads answer the question.

I hate when people like fly up to lights or stopped traffic and slam on breaks at the last min.
Like I get that brakes on new cars are at the point where you can pretty safely come down from 50-60mph pretty fast( in a pretty short distance). But like what are you gonna do if the brakes give out or someoe pulls out in front of you. I always watch my rearview sitting at stoplights and its always new cars doing it. like damn I'm sitting here braced for inmact while this benz is doing 60-0 test right on my ass

We have been together for 11 years now. Yep. And for the first two years I drove him and his bros around whenever they wanted in the old-ass boat my dad handed me down. And he's the one who's been in two accidents, one of which was him (minorly) rear-ending a car at a stoplight.

It's ruuuuuuuuuuude.
 
The driver always choses the tunes, thats why I like to drive. Not very fond of listening to Beyonce, Aguilera or Timberlake. That said, I really don't have a problem if she wants to drive.

I think she sees it as a courtesy if she is driving, then I can have a drink or two.

It also has to be said that she is better at parallel parking than I am.
 
I'm not paying for all that gas. My last relationship we alternated, it also depended on the situation. Or just deciding before we went somewhere.
 
This is one of those remnants of the past that, at some point, were widely accepted and now aren't. There's no good reason to keep this strain of thought around (never was either).

Just know some guys will insist they drive with courtesy in mind while others think women are weak/can't drive. It's something to be judged on a case-by-case basis.

Or, if they can't be written for they are 'unwritten' rules, maybe you can sing them to a voice recording file and post it up online somewhere?

The problem with unwritten rules is that they vary a lot from town to town, culture to culture, even if we assume they are somewhat general.
 
I drive all the time. Alot of it has to do with the fact that I love driving and also I'm 6'4 and wont be fitting into any ford focus .


If we are on a road trip like driving to disney she will drive for bits of it , but never as much as I do and mostly to just let me get some quick sleep.

My father always drives whenever we go somewhere with the family, my mom pretty much refuses to. It's the same in my whole family, and also for the few friend's families that I've been in a car with.
 
Girls can drive just like guys, my current gf hasn't got a driving licence so there's that but I've been driven by ex-gfs or female friends without me ever questionning the fact. I'm not going to be the only driving, especially on long rides.
 
I do the driving when my wife and I are in the car. One exception is when we've gone on long road trips and then we'll typically take turns.

Truthfully, it feels odd when we're both in the car and she's driving.
 
I always drive, and my wife only drives when I'm drunk. Both she and I prefer it this way. In addition we are very type cast in our marriage, she stays home with the kid .. cooks nightly, cleans, laundry etc.. and I make bacons and bring them home. I fix stuff, kill bugs and drive the goddamn car.
 
I don't have a SO, but it would be whoever's car we are in. If we are in mine, I'm definitely driving. In hers, it's up to her. If she doesn't want to drive, great. I prefer driving 99.99% of the time. Not worth arguing over.

It's the same for my family. Both my parents (obviously) have tons more driving experience, yet I always drive.

He has comical anxiety problems. And, as I said originally, he freaks out whenever ANYONE but him drives--it's got nothing to do with my gender OR our relationship. When you've been in an eleven year relationship and the worst problem your relationship has is still better than this, feel free to shit on my completely excellent and radically equal relationship.

This is a "fun at parties" moment.
That is not what "third wave" means. The definition of "feminism" can be debated all day long, but Third Wave means intersectionality. It means understanding that fighting for Rich White Women isn't the same as fighting for women. Nothing socially conservative about that.

"Not the good ones" is a great way to counter oppression. Tell people who want to fight for fairness in the world that their high heels disqualify them. Get yourself a nice tiny group of intelletually compact members.

Feminism demands personal change and growth not once, but throughout life.

Social conservatives have been trying to co-opt the language of feminism forever. I went to an all-girls Catholic high school where I was taught about how the power of women was so monumental, and something to be celebrated, and something we could enshrine within ourselves by being immaculate, competitive with each other and passive towards men, and always acting within the context of The Family. They taught us that the people who wanted legal abortion were all men who sought to use women for sex without the consequences of paternity. They told us that we were ultimate power feminists, because we had pride in our wombs.

Those people are not Third Wave feminists. bell hooks and Maxine Hong Kingston are Third Wave. Don't let impostors trick you. Also solidarity forever.
 
My ex never drove. EVER. Fucking pissed me off. The only time she drove was when i broke up with her. Felt good man. GF after that always offered. It felt so awesome.

Had a large thing typed up, then I realized for the last two months I have been conflating new wave feminism (www.facebook.com/NewWaveFeminists) with third wave. Jesus christ I hate my brain. After re reading the wiki page on third wave I realized that its the type of feminism that I like. These one though, the new wave assholes, they are just republicans calling themselves feminists.
 
I've never encountered this situation (public transit, lol), but I'd assume that the owner of the car is the one that drives. Probably not that simple, of course.

When it comes to driving we share the responsibility pretty evenly. I have no problems being chauffeured around, gives me time to post in threads like this :).
 
I drive mostly unless we are going somewhere that requires patience to find a park. Finding a car space is one of the most stressful, rage inducing activities I've ever engaged in.
 
My dad always drives my mom. She drives herself obviously, and will drive for about an hour on a long trip, but other than that always my dad. When I was little, like under 5, we sold a car to this woman who came with her boyfriend/husband and when she got in driver seat instead of the guy I was so confused. I just thought the man always drove.
 
'The guy drives' seems/seemed to be an unwritten rule, especially among religious and more old fashioned people (from my experiences of course).

Sure, I'll try to give a really general list of stereotypical unwritten rules:

  • The male sleep closer to the window and/or door.
  • The male opens the door for the female.
  • The male carries heavy things.
  • The male may cook for the female, but only if he's good at it.
  • If the female is not good at cooking, the male takes her out to eat more often.
  • The male does most household tasks that are physically strenous, unless the female is a stay-at home wife/mother.
  • The male should tolerate physical assault to a degree. He may only speak up if he gets lasting bruises anywhere visible, and only then in a joking manner to his other male peers.
 
It's the man's job to drive. It's the woman's job to navigate.

These are the gender rules I learned growing up. Then again, I was born in the sixties.

That being said, my wife is welcome to drive whenever she wants, and we split driving duties on long hauls for safety reasons. Given all that, she generally always wants me to drive. Not sure if it's a "woman thing" or a "societal expectation" thing.
 
I always get the "sad face" when I suggest my wife drives. So most the time I do it unless we're going somewhere where I might be drinking (as she doesn't) and I navigate, good job I like driving.

Also she hates driving anywhere she doesn't know because she can't, by her own admission, follow a sat-nav.

Hate this shit. Men that can't cook disgust me. Its like not being able to wipe your own ass. Its such a basics thing to humanity that if you are unable to cook you really aren't fit to be an adult.
