What do you shoot with?
This is the only answer:
ESDF - movement
Shoot - LMB
Jump - RMB
Shift - Bring up iron sights/Aim/Zoom
Space - Crouch
All the rest of keys around ESDF - Can be assigned per game.
This configuration gives you complete control of your movement and aiming with your fingers placed in their natural position.
Even when I'm not gaming, my left hand rests at WASD.
There is nothing natural about having to stretch my pinky finger to reach shift and ctrl. The only answer is your choice of preference. I used to play WoW with so many awful macros and played almost every class. Was all over my keyboard with no problem.
My jaw literally dropped when I read this. It's not really good for movement. PC games have never been prone to emphasize movement and it's likely because WASD is a poor replacement for a dpad in a 3d age.
Actually games are way better at this now.It really is a shame that it's literally impossible to combine Mouselook with any analog movement in most PC games. And it's especially annoying given that every game has analog movement available but only when you switch to full-on controller mode. As soon as you switch to the mouse it's four-way digital only.
First time it really bugged me was in Bioshock 2 where there wasn't even a walk button. Nothing is less immersive than tapping forward to move slowly through a particularly tense/scary/stealthy part of a game.
Actually games are way better at this now.
For example, I played through the entirety of Dishonored with my PS3 Nav controller and mouse.
So good :]
maybe I should compile a small list of games this works with/how to guide

Go play Warsow or Tribes for fucks sake. Go watch vids of Q3 ski maps. The PC is the beginning and end of emphasizing movement in the 3D age.

ESDF is probably technically superior. A home row anchor key makes tactile spatial recognition easier. The number of readily available keys left of the pinky is higher. There's no appreciable reduction in the ability to hit space. The number keys are arguably easier to reach.
But I don't care. I can't do it. WASD for life.
