WASD! Huh! What is it good for?

Before WASD I was using some wild and wacky control setup to play Descent.

It worked pretty damn well but I don't think I can ever use the same control scheme again. My fingers aren't as flexible as they used to be.

This is the only answer:

ESDF - movement
Shoot - LMB
Jump - RMB
Shift - Bring up iron sights/Aim/Zoom
Space - Crouch
All the rest of keys around ESDF - Can be assigned per game.

This configuration gives you complete control of your movement and aiming with your fingers placed in their natural position.

There is nothing natural about having to stretch my pinky finger to reach shift and ctrl. The only answer is your choice of preference. I used to play WoW with so many awful macros and played almost every class. Was all over my keyboard with no problem.

One thing that's always bothered me is... Why isn't there "half a controller" for PC use? Something with an Analog, shoulders and some more buttons in the back? It's so obvious oO

I like WASD and it works great for most games. ESDF is superior with more keys to use though. I never did understand control schemes that used arrow keys or keys that were awkward to reach. For 2d games though, keyboard can be awkward use if movement is very important. Top down games are fine with a keyboard

Hearing people use WQSE instead of WSAD reminds me of the Sit vs. Stand wiping phenomenon. Blows my mind that WQSE is a thing.

Thought the thread was for this:

You have to stretch to hit shift when you're hands are in the normal typing position on the home row? You must have tiny hands. My left pinky has no problem hitting the shift button.

It's not really good for movement. PC games have never been prone to emphasize movement and it's likely because WASD is a poor replacement for a dpad in a 3d age.
My jaw literally dropped when I read this.

Go play Warsow or Tribes for fucks sake. Go watch vids of Q3 ski maps. The PC is the beginning and end of emphasizing movement in the 3D age.

never understood WASD. totaly useless, since there arent enough buttons around.
always used RDFG

for games like rocket arena i had to use all the buttons around as weapon shortcuts (Q for grenade, E for rocketlauncher, Z - not english layout - for shaft, T for shotgun, U..., H..., B..., etc)
Y for crouch, space for zoom...
and its usability was better for many different games... used E and T for leaning, when the game allowed it...

imho, WASD is as useful as the cursor keys

I wish I had switched to ESDF when I first had the idea floated past me (maybe a decade ago). Now I'll never be able to switch from WASD.

Earlier this year I played some Quake at a net cafe, and they had a keyboard with macro switches on the left.
I kept trying to use Q(Caps Lock)AS :[

It really is a shame that it's literally impossible to combine Mouselook with any analog movement in most PC games. And it's especially annoying given that every game has analog movement available but only when you switch to full-on controller mode. As soon as you switch to the mouse it's four-way digital only.

First time it really bugged me was in Bioshock 2 where there wasn't even a walk button. Nothing is less immersive than tapping forward to move slowly through a particularly tense/scary/stealthy part of a game.

Actually games are way better at this now.

For example, I played through the entirety of Dishonored with my PS3 Nav controller and mouse.
So good :]

maybe I should compile a small list of games this works with/how to guide

Holly crap, didn't even know this was possible!

He and others have been told a number of times. I don't think people quite understand.

ESDF is probably technically superior. A home row anchor key makes tactile spatial recognition easier. The number of readily available keys left of the pinky is higher. There's no appreciable reduction in the ability to hit space. The number keys are arguably easier to reach.

But I don't care. I can't do it. WASD for life.

Love the mouse. Hate the keyboard. would much rather get some kind of controller accessory (Ex: like commissar mentioned the PS Nav controller. 1 handed, has dpad buttons, analog, X, O, L1 and L2. more than enough keys you need for standard inputs).

WASD is like some hack way at controlling. so unrefined. Plus, not to mention they're stiff buttons, movement should really be given an analog stick.

YES PLEASE!

I've been using ESDF since I first started playing FPS games (Duke Nukem 3D), so I'm all about ESDF, but I do realize that the WASD potentially has a huge advantage over ESDF: the Left Alt key. I never use Left Alt, but with WASD, I might; it gives you an extra button for your thumb to press. With ESDF, I only use the space bar with my thumb. Other than that, though, I think having the extra keys to the left of your pinky is the reason I go with ESDF over WASD.
