Remember that I was responding to a post that said copy and paste from the source material = movie failure.

(Then you can in with your 5 movies...)

Adaptions can be good. As long as it retains the core thrusts of the original. (The Shining) Sticking to the source material can also work if the source material is already good. Saying that only adaptations work paves the way for scrambling things just for the sake of scrambling them.

But Cronenberg is right.

You rebutted with Batman and Robin and so I gave a list of things that diverged and worked.

There is not a film that is 100% faithful to the source. It is impossible. So the only way to make an adaptation (good or bad) is to expect changes.

Isn't it awesome that we're having a debate as to whether the non-squid ending we haven't seen yet works in the context of the movie we haven't seen yet?

The internet is a true winner.

Then I gave a list of things that diverged (Sin City's better cause Jessica Alba's character was never topless?) and didn't and you countered with, "So?"

Fun insta history... I guess.

It's possible to make changes without drastically altering characters, missing the point etc. Any change made to a movie that fans resent/resist is met with "It's FILM!" That line of thinking is worthless.

I am beginning to suspect wilful nonsense on your part....

I rebutted your Batman and Robin with a list of five 'good to very good' films that diverged from their sources.

Your point was rebutted. You had already established the possibility of the movie being bad (Batman and Robin, cited). Listing more shitty adaptations does not bolster your position, it only reiterates your point.

Just as it is true that divergence can lead to Batman and Robin, it also can lead to the Shining.

Either one of us listing more movies does nothing to change this.

Now do you understand?

I am not the person with whom you have had that discussion.

Also, judging the changes out of context before you see the film is worthless.

Ugh at those posters. Anyway when Cronenberg did A History of Violence, he didn't dumb it down for film. Whereas the Watchmen stuff does look dumbed down for film

Part of the problem is that a lot of really hardcore fans don't want mainstream audiences to see this, period. They think that will dilute its specialness and make their appreciation for this secret, lofty work of art, somehow less worthy and impressive.

I'm just the opposite. I want to spread the love. I want my friends to stop thinking I was the invisible man for Halloween, or that my buddy was from the Blue Man Group...

Your buddy dressed as Dr. Manhattan gives me a chubby. No offense, just sayin'.

edit: I bought pretty much the same coat at a thrift store for my scarecrow halloween costume, only I had to rough it up it to look more raggedy.

Doesn't food in the SW universe come in pill form? Or am I thinking of something else..

The Jedi have food pills but it's just for emergencies. The SW universe of course has food and drinks. Blue milk, dude.

Also, my buddy is a NeoGaffer too. He might be sad you called him chubby. ;_:

Ah. So I should've said "So?" to your first list of 5 where listing anything was already meaningless.

Now do you understand?

There's nothing to understand. You said listing 5 movies proved something, then said listing any more was pointless. Makes perfect sense.

I am not the person with whom you have had that discussion.

Yes. You merely continued it via tangential lists.

Also, judging the changes out of context before you see the film is worthless.
I don't reward random changes from the "But it's FILM!" gallery with $$. The film is not independent of the source.

Close.

We don't want the movie to be shitty. Mainstream audiences like shitty stuff. We're worried that they'll make The Watchmen shitty to curry favor with the mainstream.

It's not rocket science. Since the Lumiere Brothers the book has always been better than the movie.

Personally, had I not even read Watchmen, the squid ending would be greatest stunt to pull on the audience. Everyone would leave the theatre thinking 'WTF' instead of 'hmm...nuclear proliferation'. It would be a hoot.

It's like taking Star Wars and making all the alien characters into normal humans. Han and Bob flying the Millineum Falcon. "Punch it Bob!" "You got it Han!"

Would today's Hollywood make a blockbuster with a seven foot guy in a monkey suit as one of the co-stars?

Okay, I'm sorry. I'll rephrase it.

"It's like George Lucas decided to do another Star Wars and used a computer generated alien extra with the type of humor only kids who watch Dora the Explorer would find funny as the sidekick instead of Chewie".

You mean Jar Jar?

I wish somebody would make a real, freaked-out Alan Moore movie, full of all the acid trips, inter-dimensional beings and crazed serial killers hallucinating into the future that the author intended.

It's been a long time since a movie blew my mind.

Read the novel so you can bitch about the movie with the rest of us.
I was under the impression that the movie had been out and was not even in theaters anymore, so I was about to watch it on stream. I then realized that it was titled as the movie which isn't even out yet (my friend laughed at me when I told him I was about to watch it.)

In short, Ive made a huge mistake.

Ok so I know nothing about the graphic novels, and I'm about to watch the movie. Will I be missing out on much?
It's just 12 issues collected into one volume you can grab at any bookstore for less than $20 MSRP or much less if you look around. Go read it. The director has even stated that his movie has no chance of ever being as good. Just read it. Will you be missing out if you don't? Yes, you'll be missing like 80% of the Watchmen.

Or they'll go see a stupid ending and say "Wow. That was supposed to be some huge graphic novel? It's just like every other super hero movie. I still don't get what happened anyway."

Basically, they're sacrificing the ending for the sake of stupid people who will be lost regardless. This makes the change moronic.

i like it

i don't like the new posters. something really weird about them. too. . . clean or something. the characters just don't look right, but it's not the costuming or anything. it's the clarity and perspective of the images. i donnu.

I personally like the Comedian one and ofcourse the Rorschach one. The Comedian one is actually kinda funny and ironic. A man lighting his cigar with a blowtorch saying 'We're society's only protection'. :lol

they look excessively staged in my opinion. Everything's pixel perfect, and that's what makes them look weird methinks

I agree. look staged and silly. and the quotes don't really feel all that striking without previous knowledge of the book, I think. Obviously I can't erase the book from my memory, so trying to pretend is the best I can do, and in my little play-pretend; I'm not getting much from those quotes.

Didn't dig the The Spirit's marketing using quotes when they unveiled the women of The Spirit. Don't dig the using quotes on these posters too. There's something off-putting about it.

I won't lie. I feel this way -- mostly because I feel that the movie will fail to deliver justice to the comic. If I was optimistic about the movie, there's no doubt that I would feel otherwise.

I mean, let's face it. Despite its brilliance, 95% of the people who end up seeing this aren't going to be motivated to read the comic. If the movie fails to deliver justice, the majority is going to think that Watchmen is a poor work as a whole.

Any movie with Carla Gugino is fine in my book, whether it will be a worthy film adaptation remains to be seen, but Carla = hotness.
Yes. My god. She looked amazing in Sin City.

Yeah, I kinda don't see the point in doing it as well. "Pictures" alone could've made a bigger impact, I think. Let the viewers make their own mind about such images
