Watchmen Trailer

Not open for further replies.
For those with PS3's, you should check out PlayStation Home tomorrow when it goes live.

Zack Snyder has made a short introduction video for Home users (live in EU home now). You can check out the latest trailer in the auditorium.

There's various Watchmen posters around showing each hero with a quote next to them.

Watchmen clothes and items will release sometime in the near future.

There will also be a (not yet detailed) competition where the winners will be able to participate in a virtual QA with the film makers in a upcoming Watchmen Home Space.

I'm about halfway through the graphic novel now and I'm really looking forward to the movie based off of this footage. It looks like it's going to be very faithful.

It is ridiculously excessive, is it not? And I thought Peter Jackson was bad.
I'm not saying I like the slow-motion, but if you think about it, using a lot of slow-motion in an adaptation of a comic-book/graphic-novel is actually kind of warranted, isn't it?

So is the Black Freighter even going to make it into the movie or is it just gonna get it's own DVD release?

Supposedly as its own DVD when Watchmen hits theaters, and then when Watchment comes to BD/DVD the rumor is Black Freighter will be integrated back into the main film.

Does anyone know for sure if the ending is changed?

New 'Watchmen' Ending: A Zach Snyder Fakeout?

Well, there's more news streaming in on the "Watchmen" front. It seems as if the alternate ending cooked up by Zach Snyder that we reported on last week may have been an elaborate scheme to test audience response to tampering with the source material. As usual, spoilers lie ahead--read no further if you haven't read the comic or don't want to know about the movie's (alleged) ending.

According to io9, the Portland, OR test screening may have been a scam staged by the studio to gauge the reaction fans would have to a squidless "Watchmen." Even Kevin Smith got in on the action, offering his defense of the different ending. So, did Snyder in fact excise the interdimensional space squid that destroys New York in the comic in favor of an Ozymandias arranged, Dr. Manhattan-esque nuking of the Big Apple? Or is this just more misinformation designed to whip the already frenzied masses into a full-blown fanboy hysteria? Hopefully, we can find out March 6 of next year. Unless, of course, Fox has its say.

Please tell me this story is correct and that it's all a hoax.

Since the date of that article Snyder has said there is no other ending; they filmed only one. Who knows.

Look, the comic ending works when the audience has committed to it being a comic book (and a very hardcore, nerdy one at that) On a screen, for a mainstream audience, it would be literally laughable. If ANYTHING needed to be changed for film, it was this.

If you can't accept that, then just stick to the comic book.

What happens in place of the squid? If nothing happens other than a large explosion, wouldn't the likely result just be for the US to find a scapegoat and then start a war? I don't get how the ending could make sense without the squid.

new impressions from chud:

watchmen: the first 22 minutes

Instead of the feature we got the first 22 minutes, introduced by Rorschach himself, Jackie Earl Haley. I had already seen the opening of the film through the credits, but what came after was new to me. It's also, I believe, the most important stuff I've seen yet, as I think it gives an idea of what the meat of this movie will look and feel like.

It will look and feel like a real movie.

That's a weird thing to say, but there are lots of people out there who, having only seen the trailers released to the public, are jumping to the conclusion that Zack Snyder has made a Watchmen filled with speed ramping and flashy money shots. From what I've seen this isn't even remotely true at all. The footage is stylish - well shot, with rich visuals and dynamic compositions - but it looked more like a modern take on a noir film than anything else. What I saw was moody, sometimes muted. Snyder allows his takes to be long, eschewing a quick cut style that many seem to think would rule the day in this film. The 22 minutes I saw didn't feel like an action film at all (except, of course, for the opening fight scene, which I've already described to you).

. . .

The film is packed with details. Every frame seems to have something that lends depth to the world or background to the characters; there were elements in the opening scene that I missed the first time around and only caught here. This is definitely a movie that will have a high replay value, both for the uninitiated and the hardcore fan.

Finally, the performances seemed right on. Maybe it's because I've been seeing more and more of this footage over time, but both Patrick Wilson and Haley seem perfect in their roles. My first look at Stephen McHattie as Hollis Mason was a good one; he gets across a certain air of wistfulness without forcing it. He's also instantly likable, a trait that's key since he'll only be in a few short scenes in the film and his character needs to have an emotional pay off.

some spoilers abound that in the link. but it's a good thing we don't have any "the movie is all slow-mo" naysayers around here! whew!

edited in some new great info. sorry i left it out the first time; just wanted to be sure to avoid the spoilers for those who didn't want to see them.

The possible excess of flashy slow-mo shots is, by far, my biggest concern about the film. I really hope that this turns out to be the case.

Look, the comic ending works because monsters destroying cities has been utilized in movies since the dawn of the genre, when the audience has committed to it being a comic book (and a very hardcore, nerdy one at that) On a screen, for a any audience, it should actually stick to the fucking source material. Especially material as celebrated and cared about as this.. If ANYTHING needed to be changed for film, then it should have never been made.

If you can't accept that, then you're a stupid whore.

Fixed. :D

hey guys, i'm very uninitiated (though i'm thinkin of going out and grabbing the graphic novel today and just being done with it :lol) but i've seen a few trailers now... does this also involve superheroes from other 'universes'? in the trailer the other day I thought I saw superman, and in the link at the top of this page I thought it was captain america. dont know if i'm just seeing similar characters and leaping to conclusions though.

sorry for the n00b questions. :(

naw man, it's sort of a collection of characters who seem to loosely mirror superheroes from the d.c. universe. they're all original characters, though, and you don't have to have any prior knowledge from outside the universe to enjoy it (presuming the movie itself is enjoyable of course)

ok. i thought i saw a doll in a window that was a caped man in blue... that's what was making me think superman.

sweet. i'm actually pretty pumped to go grab the novel. borders has the price jacked way up though which is lame.

oh, yeah, you'll love the graphic novel. the movie is still a toss-up, but the graphic novel will definitely impress you i think. it's a classic.

Really? I always remembered the price being $19.99 for the entire graphic novel. Actually, I just bought a copy of the book for a Secret Santa gift exchange that I had with my friends last Friday from Borders and it was still $19.99 w/20% off the cover price.

Actually, come to think, during the Keane Act riots, in the trailer, I think I saw a Superman effigy being burned.

It's a DC property, technically, so the comics and all the films and everything are Time Warner owned. Snyder et. al. could probably use a Superman effigy if they wanted to. Superhero comics were supposedly popular in the Watchmen universe before the Minutemen / Manhattan / Crimebusters appeared.

The special collectors one is like $79.

Hmm, I got my copy of Absolute Watchmen for $55 off of Amazon a few weeks ago - just checked the current price, it's at $58.80. If not from Amazon, then Absolute Watchmen is $75, unless someone raises the price.

So, ehm, are we screwed?

Judge Rules for 20th Century Fox in Watchmen Case

Source: New York Times
December 24, 2008

This hasn't been the best Christmas Eve for Warner Bros. as the New York Times reports that 20th Century Fox has won a ruling against Warners towards their claim over the rights to Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' graphic novel Watchmen, which director Zack Snyder turned into a nearly completed film.

Originally, the matter was going to be settled at a trial set for late January, just six weeks before the intended release for Snyder's movie on March 6. In a surprise ruling, Judge Gary A. Feess concluded that 20th Century Fox owns a copyright interest and have the right to distribute the movie themselves, having acquired the rights to the graphic novel in the late '80s before shelving the intended film. Judge Feess has suggested that the studios work on a settlement or an appeal rather than going to trial, but we probably won't hear the results of this decision until the New Year.

Bummer, or what?

Really, noir? So it will be in black and white, have half the scenes in near-darkness, and feature narrating detectives and hot femme fatales?

Is there an HQ version of this "theater preview" floating around somewhere?:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVwh4b2KGX4

Tons of footage I don't think I've seen anywhere else before. What theaters have been showing it?

Woah, that looks awesome.

Ugh, it hurts to know that the movie might get pushed back.

Pushed back? From my understanding won't we be lucky to have it just release?

Uh, bummer for WB. We won't notice a thing. They probably have to hand over some cash to Fox, and slap their name on to the film. That's about it. Fox said they don't want to cancel the film or alter it, but they want a piece of the pie since they 'own the rights to it'.

ugh huge bummer. I've lost faith in 20th century fox. the studio seems to take control of the movies, turning whatever comes out into something they think will please everyone.

I really believe that the movie will now be cut down and edited to be more accessible to more people.

The audio's more clear in this version, but it's still a shitty cam recording:

Still awaiting HQ goodness for the preview of the movie I'll never get a chance to see in my lifetime :(
