They're just taking a que from the author himself, whom is not satisfied, nor will he ever be satisfied, with any film adaptation of his amazing works.

The thing is, though, Alan Moore is pretty much completely insane, and he won't deem any adaptation worthy until they give him full control over it. He justifiably hates having other people touch his work.

I think that, so far, this looks pretty good. Better than my expectations, at least, since I was somewhat iffy on the costumes when they were unveiled. While I'm not expecting this to live up to the Watchmen graphic novel, there's no reason that it can't make for an entertaining movie.

Plus, Snyder sells me on his enthusiasm, what with doing the Black Freighter separately and doing all the web episodes stuff. It seems like he knows he can't get all of the content into the movie, but he wants to try to make it available anyhow.

I'm still reserving judgment and won't let myself get too hyped, but I am more positive on this now than I was before.

Well, shades of grey is probably the easiest answer, although he is ostensibly a good guy. His character arc takes place over decades, basically. To go into detail would probably involve massive spoilers.

Considering his role in the background of the story, I certainly wouldn't call him a hero, though he is the only superpowered character featured in the book (there are others featured a bit... indirectly).

He's not really a villain, either.

He's like Reed Richards, if Reed Richards would give all of his creations away for free and ceaselessly designed them (with all the implications such a trait would have in terms of society's technological level). He's also rather like Superman if Superman were completely just a compassionless tool of the state. What's that phrase from the book? "God exists, and he's an American."

He's more of a...force of nature than anything. He's definitely not your "rah-rah must save the day and kiss the baby" kind of hero.

I was curious after watching the trailer for Watchmen close to one gazillion times just how it all matched up to the Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons graphic novel and with ten examples I think you will get a pretty good idea of what Zach Snyder is going for and judge for yourself if he is on the right track or not. Personally, I think he has it nailed even though this appears to be a slick version of the comic, which is sure to create detractors, but after all is said and done it depends on how he condenses the 12 chapter novel into a 2:30 hour movie.

i warn you that, obviously, the comparison contains spoilers for people who are not familiar with the comic.

I don't know if they'll do anything special for a movie version other than a new cover. Don't wait.

I don't think they can really do much with a re-release. The Absolute Edition of Watchmen already has plenty of extras with the script material and recolored pages. I'd just get the regular $12 paperback. I can't imagine them doing more than releasing the Absolute Edition again or just printing more paperbacks with a new cover.

EDIT: Yeah, just a new cover. DC is releasing this in November.

It has the recolored art from the Absolute Edition and then some sketch material. Price is $39.99

After seeing the trailer before The Dark Knight (Which I'm seeing again tomorrow) I borrowed the graphic novel from a friend. I've been meaning to read it for a long time and the trailer put me over the edge. About half way through.
