They're just taking a que from the author himself, whom is not satisfied, nor will he ever be satisfied, with any film adaptation of his amazing works.

The thing is, though, Alan Moore is pretty much completely insane, and he won't deem any adaptation worthy until they give him full control over it. He justifiably hates having other people touch his work.

I think that, so far, this looks pretty good. Better than my expectations, at least, since I was somewhat iffy on the costumes when they were unveiled. While I'm not expecting this to live up to the Watchmen graphic novel, there's no reason that it can't make for an entertaining movie.

Plus, Snyder sells me on his enthusiasm, what with doing the Black Freighter separately and doing all the web episodes stuff. It seems like he knows he can't get all of the content into the movie, but he wants to try to make it available anyhow.

I'm still reserving judgment and won't let myself get too hyped, but I am more positive on this now than I was before.

So whats the deal with Billy Crudup's I-touch-you-and-you-die character? Thats the one interesting looking thing in there for me.

You haven't read Watchmen? He's Dr. Manhattan aka God. He can do basically anything. Really.

Nuclear accident of some sort that turns him into an all-powerful superhero. Pretty standard issue stuff.

Read it. Or wait and watch the movie and then read it, I guess.

But is he a villain? It almost seems so. Or is Watchmen more of a shades-of-grey type of affair?

Well, shades of grey is probably the easiest answer, although he is ostensibly a good guy. His character arc takes place over decades, basically. To go into detail would probably involve massive spoilers.

Considering his role in the background of the story, I certainly wouldn't call him a hero, though he is the only superpowered character featured in the book (there are others featured a bit... indirectly).

He's not really a villain, either.

He's like Reed Richards, if Reed Richards would give all of his creations away for free and ceaselessly designed them (with all the implications such a trait would have in terms of society's technological level). He's also rather like Superman if Superman were completely just a compassionless tool of the state. What's that phrase from the book? "God exists, and he's an American."

Oh man it looks so good. It's a shame that almost the entire trailer was in slow motion but what are you gonna do? They need to sell this shit to a larger audience.

He's more of a...force of nature than anything. He's definitely not your "rah-rah must save the day and kiss the baby" kind of hero.

Manhattan is not a villain, he's no hero either. It's just that he doesn't actually give a shit about anything; not surprising, since he's the most advanced and powerful being on Earth and probably beyond. His mind works on a different scale.

*massive spoiler*
But I enjoyed the hell out of it when he owned Ozymandias at the end. That was fantastic.

It's actually a pretty good description of the characters involved. Kind of poignant really.

yeah, good description for a fifth grade

but I guess it works well for that particular category Snyder is aimin at

There isn't a rolleyes gif big enough for how pretentious and annoying this kind of "ho ho ho, this graphic novel is art and cannot be altered" crap is. Really, you're getting down on Snyder for a statement of fact about the story of the thing? It's not like he said this was the core vision of the graphic novel or anything.

They're just taking a que from the author himself, whom is not satisfied, nor will he ever be satisfied, with any film adaptation of his amazing works.

This is so true, this topic is testament enough to that. If they can adapt Dickens they can freaking adapt Moore, and no amount of ego-inflating self importance is going to change it.

Dunno if he is on the scale one way or another.
He seems like he is ticking along a to do list. He knows he's going to do every single item on the list, he knows what will happen when he does it, but only really reacts to the events in a concrete way when they hit the present time. Dunno if he even has free will.

perhaps the fact all of his works have been translated into shit movies has something to do with that?

if your own works, works you've spent years on, would be treated like crap you'd be as pissed as him, don't kid yourself

oh, and ego? self-importance? Have you ever read one of Moore's interviews? Guy's as down to earth as your typical bloke, unlike that asshole Miller who's always reiterating the fact he's a god writer

If there's anything 300 taught me it's that Zack Snyder is better at making trailers than he is at films. I've watched this trailer probably 15 times now, but I'm going to remain cautiously optimistic until it comes out.

Just finished the book...WOW!

Not just manga or comics, its one of the best pieces of fiction I have ever read.

WOW WOW WOW!

What an ending, you agree with
Ozy
and the
hero go along with everything, jesus, so awesome.

But :( at
Rorsharch, easily my favorite character, but he went down with his convictions intact, and he might get back at Ozy anyway.

So, so good.

After reading this, I still like the trailer. But I recognize that it wont be as good as the book.

My favorite quote from the book...

*MAJOR SPOILERS*
"Do you seriously think I'd explain my master-stroke if there remained the slightest chance of you affecting its outcome? I did it thirty-five minutes ago."
*******

That was, without a doubt, the greatest twist in any form of entertainment in all history.

haha, so true.
I was like O_O. Easily the best build-up I've read in comics, and probably in all fiction

like I said, I also loved
Ozy's lack of words when he thinks Manhattan is finally dead, and he comes back 20 times his size smashing through a wall, and then humiliation-age begins:
"I am disappointed, Veidt. Very disappointed. Reconstructing myself after the subtraction of my intrinsic field was the first trick I learned."
" This world's smartest man means no more to me than does its smartest termite."

haha, take THAT dude

not sure if it's been posted yet, but rope of silicon did a great trailer-to-comic shot comparison.

I was curious after watching the trailer for Watchmen close to one gazillion times just how it all matched up to the Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons graphic novel and with ten examples I think you will get a pretty good idea of what Zach Snyder is going for and judge for yourself if he is on the right track or not. Personally, I think he has it nailed even though this appears to be a slick version of the comic, which is sure to create detractors, but after all is said and done it depends on how he condenses the 12 chapter novel into a 2:30 hour movie.

i warn you that, obviously, the comparison contains spoilers for people who are not familiar with the comic.

One of my biggest concerns about this movie is how Dr. Manhattan would be handled. Of course we haven't seen tons of him yet, but it looks like they nailed it.

this x10

....seriously...this movie looks incredible and Day Fucking One!

....now I just have to finish the actual book =/

and *major spoilers from the book*

i wonder how they'll handle the GIANT LAME MONSTER. that shit was seriously retarded.

Also, it seemed like he killed a Viet Cong solider or something; plus there's a dude burning people in what seems to be Vietnam. So Vietnam plays a part in it? I need to buy Watchmen; even as a dirty poor I have no excuse considering it's like $12

Yes, Vietnam is featured in a flashback scene. BUY IT.

Since we're not talking specifics, with specific regard to what you're mentioning, I believe the scriptwriters have altered the nature of the climax. It remains to be seen how they try to handle that element of the plot.

What's amazing is that the Pumpkins song is already near the top 50 songs on iTunes now. Shows how powerful the use of it was. I had forgotten that there was a slower version of that song on the soundtrack. Great use in the trailer.

Get it from the library.

A lot of Watchmen involves brief flashbacks to various points in time. There are a couple of scenes in Vietnam.

Giant Monster Doo-Dad turns Watchmen from flawless, incredible work to flawed, incredible work, IMHO. I don't think the comic ends very well. Probably why I like From Hell a bit more.

After seeing the trailer and one of the web episodes, I'm definitely going to pick up Watchmen. But, should I get it now or wait until it's re-released when the movie comes out?

I don't know if they'll do anything special for a movie version other than a new cover. Don't wait.

I don't think they can really do much with a re-release. The Absolute Edition of Watchmen already has plenty of extras with the script material and recolored pages. I'd just get the regular $12 paperback. I can't imagine them doing more than releasing the Absolute Edition again or just printing more paperbacks with a new cover.

EDIT: Yeah, just a new cover. DC is releasing this in November.

It has the recolored art from the Absolute Edition and then some sketch material. Price is $39.99

From what I read in the EW article out this week, he changed the
cataclysmic event to something else
.

Interesting.

Oh, and this has gotta be one of the movies I'm most exited about.

Which, of course, means disappointment when it comes out.

I gotta say, though, the
Mars
scene looks -amazing- in the trailer (and is that even a spoiler, since it's in the trailer?)

After seeing the trailer before The Dark Knight (Which I'm seeing again tomorrow) I borrowed the graphic novel from a friend. I've been meaning to read it for a long time and the trailer put me over the edge. About half way through.
