Well, couldn't it?

(But yes, what a dumb thing to put on the front cover. No pressure, Snyder!)

*shrugs*

It might be. I'm giving Snyder a free pass, and trying to go in with an open mind.

300 is a dumb movie (I thought it was at least a fun watch), but the source material isn't anything deep either. Snyder did an accurate adaptation of the graphic novel. I'm really interested to see what the guy is doing with Watchmen. He seems to be trying his hardest to stay true to the comic.

Zombie movie fans complained up and down about his Dawn of the Dead. Everybody wanted Romero to get more involved. "Romero will do better!!" But once Romero gets more involved, we get a Land of the Dead that was inferior to Snyder's Dawn, and the even shittier Diary of the Dead. My point is, sometimes us fans need to just shut the fuck up and wait and see. Yeah, of course we should talk about things we're liking and disliking about the look of the movie. But some people are just hatin' to hate.

Watchmen fans should be happy about this movie either way. The trailer alone has gotten a lot of people interested in the comic, more so than any comic recommendation thread I've seen recently. And once the movie is released, even more people will go out and pick up the graphic novel.

If people honestly don't think this project can be pulled off, I'd suggest just ignoring it. Why follow a movie you don't think will turn out well? So you can pull out old posts and say "I told you so."

I love Watchmen. Rain or shine, this movie isn't going to change that.

Ace post, Grizzlygin.

As far as Citizen Kane thing goes-- Kane was a masterwork of form, highlighting things film could do that had never been tried. It's also very much a character study and told through a variety of perspectives. It's also held up as a watershed for the form and one that made people take movies more seriously.

I doubt any of that will apply to the film, but the comic certainly fits the bill. And "Adaption of the Citizen Kane of Comic Books" doesn't have the same ring.

Honestly, I KNOW that Watchmen won't work the same way as a film. The graphic novel is just not written in a way that would work within the limitations of cinema.

HOWEVER, the trailer has my hyped to all hell; day one, even if I have reservations.

So now that we've had "the Godfather Part II of comic book movies!", next up is Citizen Kane? I cant wait for the Caligula of superhero flicks.
oooooooooo that would be super duper

Which track from Koyanisqaatsi is that?
My favourite part, actually.

Prophecies

In the movie, it starts when a lot of drawn out shots of New York city blocks in rubble, then long shots of people minding their own business. Half way through, it switches to a rocket taking off, then exploding, and a 4 minute shot of a piece falling back to earth.

Citizen Kane?

Did someone from Empire see a rough cut or is that based on the preview from Comic Con? Seems pretty unprofessional if its the latter.

It's not unprofessional at all. It's what magazines do, they hype things up on their covers. And it's really not that much of a stretch.

Citizen Kane - arguably best movie of all time.
Watchmen - arguably best comic-book of all time.

Ergo, the Watchmen movie is the Kane of comic-book movies. Arguably.

Hopefully someone puts up the rest of that footage. It's got a lot more that was cut out and I'm sure you guys would like what they show in it. It definitely made me a believer in this movie. The music in it is great too.

It had a shot of Laurie and Dan kissing as a nuclear bomb goes off that gave me chills. I think it's from Dan's (or Laurie's, I forgot) nightmare after they sleep together. It looked pretty cool.

Someone needs to make a Rorschach mask that uses new LED technology.
Speaking of, and this might not be the best place to ask this question, but I am looking to create my own Rorschach mask for a Halloween costume. It obviously won't move, but I am kind of struggling on where to start. I want this thing to look good. But I also want to be able to see out of it.

Any suggestions?

I don't know, I can think of one that's better. ;)

Working in a bookstore, I've seen interest shoot through the roof in Watchmen - we've been selling them like crazy.

No matter how the movie turns out, more and more people are checking out the book, and that's never a bad thing.

anyone know when/if there will be anymore volumes of the animated novel (itunes)? the first one was awesome :D

All that matters IMO:

DC Comics’s Watchmen Back to Press for 300,000 Copies

"Riding a wave of interest and excitement over the new film adaptation of Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbon’s classic superhero graphic novel Watchmen, DC Comics is experiencing a boom in demand for the book, shipping more than 300,000 copies of the graphic novel in the two weeks since the release of the film’s trailer...

...“I don’t think there’s record of a trailer moving books with this velocity,” says DC Comics president Paul Levitz. “Bookscan records Watchmen selling 10,000 copies in one week. We’ve put more than 300,000 copies in print in the last two weeks. That’s a pretty amazing record for a 21 year old book.” In 2007, the title sold about 100,000 copies.

So they're giving away the whole plot for free as a promotion for the moive?

Weird.
I think only the first episode is free.

edit: Used to be free, that is.

Yes, they're doing all of them eventually (leading up to the film's release, which is about two episodes a month). As of today, however, they cost $2 each.

yeah that motion comic...hmmm yeahhhh it sounds almost as bad as the Invincible one

When's the next Absolute Watchmen reprint coming?

Wow, that motion comic is pretty slick. I could see that selling pretty well on dvd if they released it right before or right after the movie. I'd say maybe just get a more diverse voice cast.

Man, it's not great but it is no where near as bad as the Invincible one. Jesus what a mess that thing is. This one isn't great but it's not awful. Just change the voices and it would be better.

Yeah might have been a bit harsh, at least I could stand this one for more than one minute.

(And, er, also, someone wrote it. Take our word for it.)

I have read Watchmen before, several times actually, I'm just saying that when it comes to animating a comic, I think it is well done for the most part. I really didn't like the Metal Gear Solid digital novel and the way that was handled. Some aspects are really bad to it, like the effect when Dr Manhattan teleports someone is completely ruined in this.

I mean they didn't list Alan Moore as writer in the opening credits.

Prime crotch said:
Isn't it though because Moore refuses his name to be involved in any sort of adaptation?

Whatever it is, it's pretty ridiculous. Comics need a fucking union. They shouldn't be allowed to show that, credit all the people involved and then act like the words, and practically every inch of rendered line (ever see a Watchmen script?) were just fabricated out of thin air.
