I just finished the book. So good. Can't wait to see how the movie plays out. One question, Rorschach's line about "the world will look up and say 'save us'" where in the book is that? I don't remember reading it.

Third panel, I believe, though it's way more melodramatic in the book. :D

EDIT: What the hell, I'll just include the entire thing.

"The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout 'Save us!' And I'll look down, and whisper 'no.'"

Yeah. In the book he says (paraphrasing) "All the whore and politicians will look up and shout save us, and I'll whisper 'No'". Most likely it'll stay the same for the final movie since trailers usually have leftover/different-set-of dialogues.

EDIT: Beaten with style.

Also,
so it seems the new ending is set up so it looks like Dr. Manhattan caused the explosion? So Veidt is framing him by making it look like he caused the catastrophe? I wonder if that means the cancer subplot is out.
No need to spoiler tag things. I doubt the cancer subplot is out since thats what drives Dr. Manhattan to Mars. Plus it paints him in a suspicious light.

It's in. Seen in the trailer when he says "Leave me alone!!"

Also, it's funny to see the burning superman effigy :lol
EDIT: here -

That explains it than. I had watched the teaser trailer when it first came out, thought it looked good, reserved the book at the library, finally got it a couple weeks ago, read the first few chapters, watched the trailer again and heard the line and thought it was cool and was expecting it to pop up at some point. I was confused when I got to the end and didn't see it.

Not everyone's read the comic.

True.
Though if Ozy is intending to frame Dr. Manhattan it does give him extra incentive for leaving Earth.
So in that respect, I think this ending may be a little better.

The Crimebusters and what would be the "Watchmen" are two different things; the Crimebusters were a failed attempt at creating a superhero team. The name "Watchmen" comes from the translated Latin quote that appears sporadically throughout the comic, and refers to the notion that these superheroes are entirely dysfunctional and human, rather than the superhuman, transcendent figures that comic book superheroes can kind of become sometimes.

At least your stealth edit was more creative :p

I think if the film has the Kovacs interrogation just frame for frame like in the book, I believe it will have justified its entire existence.

They fucking nailed Rorschach, the actor is pretty ugly too. And im glad Manhattan sounds like that, I was a afraid they were going to use James Earl Jones with a megaphone or some weak shit like that.

I just watched that motion comic someone posted a page back...Whoever did the voice for Rorschach there should have been the choice for the movie, damn. I hate the batman growl shit (for him, i mean)

Does anyone know the name of the first song in the trailer? It sounds familiar. Maybe it's been in another movie trailer recently?
"Pruit Igoe" by Philip Glass from the original score for the film "Koyaanisqatsi".

Problem is, after have watched every trailer, I still don't know what the fuck is supposed to go on in this movie.

I had never even heard of the watchmen before all this pizzazz about a movie, but from what I can gather the watchmen are a group of superheros getting assassinated and turned into villains (in the eyes of society) by a man (or group) wanting to start a nuclear war or something

this is definitely midnight showing for me

I dunno I think his voice isn't monotonous enough as described in the comics.

I'm ok with the growl style but his tone is still too human, he was described as sounding more like a creep.

Not only is the new trailer awesome, but it's also awesome to see jett's meltdown over the slow-mo.

I honestly hope the entire movie is in slow-mo and he runs out of the theater crying.

Slow motion makes sense.

First of all, action in a comic book could be scene as a form of slow motion as well.

Secondly, it really works thematically. People like Nite Owl and The Silk Spectre (and The Comedian as well in a way) get aroused by the action. Making the action and violence almost poetic and beautiful means we see the action like these characters do.
It also suits Veidt, as he he is supposed to be the worlds greatest athlete. He moves faster than everybody else.

Thirdly, it works as a comment om modern action movies, the way the graphic novel commentend on other comics and superheroes.

And finally, as wise men like Peckinpah, Woo and Chappelle knew: everything looks better in slow motion.

I think the big difference is one had Nolan to trust, the other does not. Also, there was a terrific performance visible in that trailer. Not so here.
Bingo.

That trailer, while better than the first one, doesn't get me excited. When I see this, I'm definitely going to have to objectively judge it as a movie and movie alone, otherwise I'll be spitting vitriol.

Not half as good as the first trailer. The public will think it's cheesy, and the movie will do modestly.

It shows, especially in such an extended context, how god fucking awful Rorschach's voice is. He sounds like a 350 pound wrestler.

I really want this film to be good, but it's really not looking likely.

edit:
In regards to the footage, the highlight is the opening credits montage which sets up an alternate version of history from the 1940's through the 1970's in which superheroes were around - all set to Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changing".

Fucking hell...

Read the novel.

Anyways, to be honest, the dialogue threw me of a little bit, and I don't know what to think of Dr. Manhattan's voice. I'm liking the hell out of Rorschach though. I'm gonna see this movie, no matter what. Every Watchmen fan should IMO.

I think Rorshach's voice is fine. I'm in the camp that expected something more from Manhattan's voice though. He's the one whose speech bubbles were always emboldened. I expected some James Earl Jones type voice when imagining 'YOU DISAPPOINT ME VEIDT'. He just sounds like Billy Crudup.

That said I'm still anticipating this at full throb.

I don't see Rorschach's voice as a problem at all. The problem is Rorschach will never satisfy everyone as it's entirely down to the voice in the reader's head.

While it was perhaps a little to close to Bale's drawl for Batman (a deliberate move I wonder to appeal to TDK fans?) it was still close enough to how I imagined it in the graphic novel.

On the whole it still feels very close to the spirit of the original.

As for it's chances of being a hit. At this point it's captured enough 'nerd hearts' to at least check it out on opening weeked. I can imagine the first week being huge ($40m +) and then trailing off a solid but not spectacular (300-esque numbers) final gross.

ehhh Rorschach sounds like a guy trying to impersonate Bale's Batman.

Moore does a pretty damn good Rorschach voice.

Like I said before, I wouldn't be surprised if that was a deliberate choice. There's no doubt in my mind that WB will paint as many parallels between this and The Dark Knight as they can before release.

In fact, again, I wouldn't be surprised if the TDK DVD or Blu Ray has some kind of Watchmen extended trailer or small featurette with it.

Interesting.

Do you have a link?

Disappointed with Manhattan's voice, also not a huge fan of Rorschach's stiff looking clothes.

But if those are my biggest complaints (besides lack of squid), then it can't be that bad...

I don't Haley's Rorschach voice sounds like Bale's Batman voice at all. Both are gravelly and low, sure, but Batman's is pretty much neutral in tone. Rorschach's got this swaggering scorn quality, which is is appropriate.

I always heard him as a kind of cross between the voice of someone with a trache box and the vocal cadence of a mildly retarded person, in all seriousness. Very flat, no swaggering scorn at all. You can see it in his face in the psychiatrist interview. This guy is completely shut off until he goes into full out rage on someone. It's all in the eyebrows. If this was a guy who talked like this, he'd look angry all the time. But he's not.

He's Rorschach.

I dunno, and obviously this is a point of nuance anyway.

It's just that Rorschach has a lot of resent and scorn for the world around him; it makes sense to me for some of that to come through in his voice, and that's how I more or less "heard" him.

Low affect sure, facial expression neutral, even under a mask, but what I took from my reading is that he thinks that other people just don't get it and never will. That he, and maybe Blake, understood how things really were, and he's the only one who can save these ridiculous, filthy people from themselves. Even when biting off more than he can reasonably chew, like breaking into the military base to talk to Manhattan. He knows the score. Clearly someone's trying to kill them all, and he has to convince these other fools.

The voice is as low and gravelly as I expected, it's just that I guess there's a little undercurrent there that sounds right to me, but not necessarily to you. And it is little, I mean, it's not like he exaggerates "Oh, save us" with a different voice or something... it's all gravelly, all low.

Actually me too. I always heard a more monotone voice in my head when I read his lines.

same here....right now I'm indifferent with the approach to Rorschach voice. Maybe it'll grow on me

I loved Otterman's voice though because it's simple and what you wouldn't expect. The idea that you have this all powerful being but he wants to be relatable as possible and not freak people out

Trailer was great btw

I liked Manhattan's voice. I mean yeah, when I was reading the book, I could only imagine a James Earl Jonesy voice in my head, but the book never implied Manhattan's voice was anything more than monotonous. So yeah, it works.

Rorschach sounds good, although sometimes a bit too forced. We'll see.
