I think the only time Rorschach speaks normal (both voice and grammar) is during
his childhood until the Roche incident. During the short lived crimebusters meeting, you can see that his manner of speaking and the smooth lined speech bubble are different from the present day Rorschach.

I'm think the new ending is just fine. It's much less extraneous. The old plot about a growing conspiracy and then,
Space Squid!
seemed an odd addition. The point was to
unify humanity. The new ending does this and deals with Manhattan. I never understood why he didn't smash Ozymandeus after he found up. Sure, he couldn't tell the truth but he could kill that prick.

This new plot wraps of other loose ends and doesn't add anything unnecessary. I feel that a movie script should be like a perfectly engineered product. It's not about what additions can be made but it's finished when there is nothing that can be taken away.

I'm re-reading the Watchmen, and I have to say I'm enjoying it even more than I did the first time. Catching future references and foreshadowing really show the depth of this book.

For example,
the whole Max Shea subplot, knowing Ozimandias' plan in advance, realizing precisely what the Comedian is talking about at at Moloch's, and more.

actually, it's in every scene he doesn't have his mask on. i just always imagined it to be the cloth muffling his voice.

btw, i just finished the comic book, and it ends in a rather unsatisfying way, though i think thats kind of the point. all this mystery and intrigue kept in the dark for so long, only to end with the madman getting his way. it's rather poetic really.

There is a lot to suggest that
Veidt's plan will eventually fail, such as the Black Freighter allegory, the Ozymandias allusion to Percy Bysshe Shelley 's poem, Dr. Manhattan's final words, and much more.
 
The scene with the Nite Owl screaming is definitely
when Manhattan kills Rorschach.
. I really don't mind this new addition. It makes sense. Nite Owl and Rorschach were close friends after all. They fought crime together in the 60's and all that. I really like this scene in the trailers. Actually,
when I read the Watchmen, I found it kind of strange that there is no single panel where you see Nite Owl reacting to Rorschach's death.

Rorschach saying that he won't accept Veidt's deed, you know he's gonna get killed. Or am I wrong?

I saw it coming. Ever since
Manhattan mentioned that he saw himself killing someone in the snow, I was left anticipating that moment. When he accepted Veidt's ultimatum only to have Rorschach reject it, that was when it clicked.
 
Ever since reading it years ago I always admired Rorshach's unwavering sense of justice...
and was pleased to know at the end that it might not have all been in vain

but I didn't really figure Manhattan was talking about killing one of the group when he first mentioned killing someone. For whatever reason, I was just thinking about a nuke going off and Manhattan killing random looters or insane guys or something...lulz. Then when Owl says Ozy is behind it all I then thought Manhattan would end up killing Ozy. It wasn't until everyone seemed to play around with accepting what Ozy had done that I considered Rorschach to be the one :(.

Also what exactly is the new ending? I heard something about
Manhattan somehow creating a nuke or something but I don't understand how that really goes along with Ozys original plan of outside sources creating the massacre. Does Ozy just make the world unite against an "insane" Manhattan who then simply disappears? I suppose it works in theory, but at the end of the day it seems like the world would simply blame America for basically creating him and losing control of him. I probably like the idea a little more than the giant alien shit though. I could see how everyone could live in absolute fear of Manhattan, considering his power is simply godlike in that world. A rogue Manhattan would be catastrophic.

I thought the same way you did at first, but in the comic
the monster is made to look like it originated from the Institute for Intraspacial Studies, so the US would be just as responsible for bringing a giant psychic space monster to Earth as it would be for a pissed off at humanity Dr. Manhattan.
 
Wait, so if
Manhattan actually is the replacement of the squid, then doesn't that generate some holes in the plot? Either Ozy created all of these events to basically bank on the fact that Manhattan would see reason at the end or Manhattan was working with Ozy through the whole deal and set this whole thing up. I'd suspect the former though, as it makes Ozy seem that much more of a genious imo. Also, Manhattan essentially acting as the greatest villain the world has ever seen while at the same time being perhaps the greatest hero would be an interesting dynamic. I daresay I like it much better than the squid actually...

with Ozy out of the way. That's why I like the new ending

That's part of what makes the ending such a wrencher.
Not only does Ozzy kill all those people, they basically leave it to him to structure the world as he sees fit afterward. The only actual challenges to Ozzy's vision are Rorschach's journal and Manhattan's comment just before he leaves again.

Yeah, but he's a crazy person. That's Moore's point -- he's critiquing the nut-job, Libertarian vigilante wacko and the musings that drive them.

That doesn't make Rorschach not a good character with an admirable sense of justice. I think that's the greatest triumph of Rorschach; even if he's crazy, you still like him and empathize with him because you're made to see from his point of view, so even if you don't agree with his beliefs, you're able to understand why he holds them.

GODDAMN I love Watchmen. This movie has me pumped, and talking about it has made me appreciate the graphic novel even more.

Why do all of the voices sound so stilted and mechanical?

I don't like that at all. It takes away everything that's good about the comic by making it too easy to take in without any reading or imagination. A movie is one thing, but animating the comic and adding voices? What's the point?
 
Oh god it just gets worse. The inflection in the voices is non existent, and all sense of humor is completely lost in what's being said. Sorry, I'll quit watching and commenting.

With the new hardcover edition of Watchmen out should I bother with the absolute edition? I'm more or less curious what I would be missing if I bought one over the other.

Throughout the book you see Ozy setting up for the post attack world. He's trying to set up his utopia. Not to mention if he's not controlling the whole thing properly the squid could be discovered as a fake.

Wow, my reaction was completely the opposite. I was always baffled by the retaded, simplistic, childish black and white view of the world of Roscharch and how he was willing to keep his head permanently incrustated up his righteous holier-than-you ass even if
that would mean the death of millions.
Ozymandias has always been the true hero of Watchman to my eyes. Then again, the different reactions that the same characters produce are a testament to the Watchmen awesomeness.

since this thread got bumped, does anyone have more info about this possible cancelllation/delay? I'm thinking its probably going to end up with a settlement and will go ahead as planned, at least I hope. I dont think I can wait much longer than 3 months.

Some good stuff in the footage, including first looks at
young Walter Kovacs and Janey Slater
. But what happened to the "graphic" Dr. Manhattan explode-y scenes attendees said they saw? Was expecting flying Vietcong guts and whatnot.
 
Found a link of that new iTunes footage over at the watchmencomicmovie.com forum, and it's great! It looks this movie is really going to be a good representation of the graphic novel, but holy smokes I can understand if people who see these trailers wouldn't understand shit about what the movie is about. I mean, what do people expect when they see a dead Dollar Bill lying on the floor? He's just a flashback, if you know what I mean. Also little Kovacs looks alot like a kid from the devil. Rorschach's inkblots looks so freaking awesome. Also the shot of Dan sitting in his basement next to his costumes is so awesome. This movie looks like it's really going to nail it, if you ask me! Check out the vid here, before it gets taken offline!!

Holy fucking shit.

The iTunes footage is pretty much solid proof for me that this movie is going to rock, at least from a purely visual standpoint; the cinematography and art in just about every shot of that footage is seriously beautiful stuff.

Let me see, then:

Visuals: Look like they will be awesome. Some may dislike the slow motion, but I like it and think that it is a nice, stylized way to sort of imply the graphic novel nature of the story.

Actors: Well, from what I've seen, they're all pretty spot-on (I was kind of worried about Ozy, but there's one really good shot of him just turning toward the camera in the new footage that made me rethink my stance; I think that he'll be good). I especially applaud Rorschach and The Comedian, who appear, from the little we've heard, to have basically nailed their characters's voices and mannerisms.

Music: Philip Glass is basically made of win, so I count this as a plus.

Story: Here's where the true heart lies. Can the story keep its integrity with a new ending and some of the finer details cut or altered? I think so and remain optimistic, but I accept that things may just not work.

Color me excited.
