Anyways, you guys all misread my post - I wasnt saying that the film wont do decent at the box office (Im really not sure one way or the other), but rather that its STARTING OUT in a rather huge hole (because this settlement wont be a small figure at all), so it has to perform all that much better than a regular release would.

Well, WB is probably looking at this a bit differently, they own the complete rights to Watchmen (since they own DC), so they make money for every copy of the comic sold as a result of the movie, etc.
 
I read the script that Hayter wrote.

Ugh.

I hope that Tse dude went to town when he did the rewrites, because what I read was awful. The dialogue almost never followed the nove, most of which would be really good on film, and when it did, it was from the most basic scenes. Rorscachs journal is like more like a bitter superhero than the guy we know from the novel, and all sorts of stupid scenes were added.

Wha...? I thought they were going for just under 3 hrs for the theatrical cut and over 4 hrs for the director's cut :(

From what I've been reading, Snyder has been using the Tse script more like a set of loose guidelines and like 300, they've been using the graphic novel as their storyboards. I was watching some behind the scenes stuff where they had stacks of Absolute Watchmen books they were using as references for everything.

They nailed everyone's look except Ozymandias'.
 
Hmm...choosing whether a guy who looks almost exactly like a character, but can't act worth a damn or a guy who looks similar to a character but also has the acting chops to back it up...decisions.

I'm not happy with Ozy's casting, but Titan certainly wouldn't be a better choice. The guy is as stiff as a 2x4.
 
Watchmen - TV Spot

TAGLINES and ACTION. More milking of the "Save us" line, sounds like a different recording for this though. Anyone seen these on tv yet?

Yeah, it's definitely the happy byproduct of all this. It's a win-win, as it adds more to the burgeoning army of The Bitterly Disappointed.

Hey, I like 24. It's fun, mindless entertainment. Unfortunately, Watchmen looks like the exact same thing, which is a 789 degree turn from the source material.

i just started reading it, and i noticed that dr. manhattan has an oddly placed underwear (similar to the one added in the trailer) in every scene he is supposed to be nude. who knows what else might be censored!

i bought this at barnes and noble.. im returning it tomorrow.. anyone know where i can get an uncensored version?

there is nothing on the cover that denotes that it's censored.

manhattan wears clothes at the beginning and then wears less and less as time progresses. Chronologically that is, as the story jumps around a bit. When he's first unveiled by the government he wears a full suit, then its a smaller suit, then just briefs, then completely nude.

Watchmen hearing CANCELLED - Settlement in the case could be near

A settlement could cost Warners tens of millions of dollars. A case involving copyright ownership of Warners' "The Dukes of Hazzard," which Feess blocked from release in 2005, ended in a settlement worth a reported $17.5 million.

With "Watchmen," an adaptation of the Alan Moore graphic novel with a budget in the $130 million range, the financial stakes are higher. According to sources, Fox is asking for upfront fees as well as a percentage of the back-end.

Although Warner Bros. has long insisted that Fox's case was meritless and sought to have the case dismissed, the studio stated in court papers that Gordon or his lawyers may have failed to give Warner Bros. the proper documentation about "Watchmen's" rights in a timely fashion when the production was coming together.

The studio said in a filing Dec. 8 that Warner Bros. "never received the very documents upon which Fox asserts its claims" until a year after the studio believed it had acquired its rights from Gordon. Furthermore, Warner Bros. said, Gordon's attorneys did not alert the studio "that it should contact Fox."

Feess has been unimpressed with Gordon's conduct during the litigation, saying in an unusual and harsh footnote to his Dec. 24 ruling that because Gordon repeatedly invoked attorney-client privilege during a deposition, he was no longer free to offer any additional evidence on the copyright dispute.

In a letter Wednesday to Feess, Gordon tried to correct the judge's thinking, with lawyer Patricia Millett saying that Gordon had suffered "significant public scorn" from the lawsuit. In that letter Gordon complained that the 1994 deal that has governed the case was either the result of "a mutual mistake by both parties [Fox and Gordon], or a unilateral mistake made by his counsel, on which Mr. Gordon relied."

Saying the letter violated court rules, the judge returned it to Millett unread.

I think although some purists are indicating they want word for word pane for pane adaptation, I don't think some of the dialogue would work well on screen. Some of it might have to be cleaned up. Part I'm excited about, and hope doesn't get changed too much though is Dr Manhattan thinking about the past, present and future all at the same time - 90 seconds in the future etc. the cogs falling. As for the Octopus thing... I can see how that would be a hard sell. They do need the explosion, they need a reason for the explosion, and the idea of an invasion, the telepathic visions of the other world were meant to be what unites humanity against a common enemy... I've got an open mind on this if they've really changed it.

It seems like a very risky movie. Alternate history, retired masked vigilantes, the spectre of nuclear war, atrocities committed by many of the characters, bizarre rationale of the villain and surprising consequences... i'm wondering how audiences will swallow it, and whether the director can pull it off.

I'm excited having read it though, its now my most wanted movie of the year.

Animated movie coming to DVD. Heard they might edit it into Watchmen for an Extended Edition later on.

The whole Black Freighter thing means nothing if they don't have Ozy teleport the fucking squid to NYC in the end though, so it would be pretty stupid to edit it back in without editing the squid in as well.

The Comedian IS killed in the film, and his scene at Moloch's place, so he had to have seen something. My guess is that he's seen a model of Manhattan being made, or something, thus warranting the kidnapping of the artists and scientists to the remote island

I know, I mentioned this before -- as the thread is more about everything Watchmen (film, comic, litigation, etc.) than a "Watchmen Trailer" -- but I don't know, at this point an official thread about the film would be nice.

The more I think about the impact on the overall movie by changing the ending the more pissed off I get. Just film the god damn story or don't fucking film it. Make a different movie with your own stupid ending.

You know there is a rumor floating around that the ending actually is what happens in the graphic novel, they were just curious to see how audiences would react to hearing a different ending was filmed.

Its a long shot, but I wouldn't lose all hope yet.

But if there's no giant alien squid, why are there any kidnapped artists and scientists on the island? And I don't get why the whole squid thing is such a hard sell. I wonder if the people saying that have ever heard of a movie called Cloverfield.

Dave Gibbons: Well, the original script I read had
the bad guy dying and the good guy riding off into the sunset with the girl in his arms. You know, the sort of Hollywood ending you'd expect. But the first thing that Zack said to me when I met him was 'Don't worry, that character doesn't die' and he knew that was the key to it, that the ending had to be ambiguous. A lot of people seem very attached to the giant squid that turns up at the end of the comic - that isn't a problem for me, as long as the emotional message at the end of the story is the same and it's left open-ended. On the last cut of the movie I saw, that was certainly the case.

But I can understand why they wouldn't want to put that in the movie, it might be a bit of a leap too far for the audiences. But it was always the way we intended to end it, there are lots of clues all the way through the comic.

it's an act of terrorism or a giant squid from space, the threat has to come from outside. Apparently when Reagan met Gorbachev to sort out the end of the Cold War, he suggested to Mikhail that an alien invasion might be just the thing to pull everyone together. Of course the irony of 9/11 is that it did pull everyone together - just not for very long. But I'm getting all political now...

I wish it didn't bother me so much, because I generally like what I've seen so far of the movie except a few minor quibbles. But I'm not sure I'll go see this with a different ending.
 
Just finished it last night for the first time. I'm over 20 years late to this argument, but here's my take:

The only thing that bothered me through the whole story was Manhattan. For a man who has reconstructed himself and attained god-like powers, he acts painfully human. He is insecure, hypocritical and the only direct impact he had on the events in Watchmen was to murder Rorschach in the end, which, if he could truly see the future, he wouldn't have bothered doing. Because of the journal, people would eventually hear Rorschach’s story anyway, either they believe it or not, and even Veidt wasn't too concerned. This may be blasphemy, but I think the whole story would have worked better without Manhattan at all. I guess the counter argument would be that he did see the future and without Rorschach no one believed the journal I guess...but I still didn't like it. Every other part of the story, including the squid...was totally awesome. Not what I expected at all and I'm ashamed I didn't pick this up sooner.

I always took this as a kind of suggestion on the part of Moore that certain human motivations are inescapable. And that the distance and perspective that supposedly comes with godlike powers is, in-part affectation. The character is a critique of the motivations and behaviors of Superman, no?
