Watchmen Trailer

The thing that I'm concerned about, regarding the ending change:

Dr. Manhattan's already left Earth. What will the people of Earth "unite" to do, follow him into another galaxy? Besides, everyone already knows that Dr. Manhattan is invincible and immortal; what good would uniting against him do? A big dumb alien squid is one thing; a god is another.

Ozy almost had it worked out. He at least surprised him

I think it's more of a
"Keep fucking around with nukes and I'll wipe out the rest of you" thing. Either way people are forced into action by fear of an outside force coming down on them.

You missed the last page or two.

I can't tell if they are calling this group the watchmen in the movie or just doing it to avoid confusion in the trailers.

You just figured this out now... oh and BTW:

There's no alien squid

It's not like it was confirmed anywhere else. Trailers are usually a splicing of things to make it more understandable.

And I can't tell if you're trying to be an asshole with your second comment or if you just figured this out now.

Actually, uh, the last page or two was why I made that comment. Most people were talking about
how the plan doesn't make sense because Doc is on the American side, while I thought that the bigger problem was that trying to unite against an indestructible superman is a bit pointless.

The voiceovers in the second trailer that came out approximately a month ago made it pretty clear that they were referring to themselves as the watchmen. Why do it in the trailer if they're not going to do it in the movie? That would be even more confusing.

It's fairly common for footage and lines shown in trailers to not necessarily make it into the feature length movie. Lines and the delivery of lines can be cut or changed completely for a trailer.

Now I could understand if
the giant squid were changed to a UFO or something similar. That makes sense. The idea of inventing an alien force is the point, so it doesn't really matter if that alien force is a giant squid or a UFO or a flock of little green men. The Doc Manhattan thing just flat out doesn't make sense seeing as he is on the side of the Americans, even if he does leave them to go to Mars. And as other people pointed out, you can't unite against an unstoppable force. All the firepower in the world can't stop the Doc. He can blink the whole universe out of existence if he wants.

There have been several instances of this though, in the characters' voices as well as in WB publicity materials.

I'm well aware of things in trailers not showing up in the actual movie, like Bond with his MP5.

I'm still not buying all of this talk about the ending being changed. I think if they're going as close as they can to the book with everything else, they're going to keep the ending entact. There's no reason not to.

I'm willing to bet that the rationale behind it was that if they are not going to include the Black Freighter story and the subplot about the writer and artist being missing, then that completly eliminates the foreshadowing for the squid ending and it would come out of nowhere. It's still wrong because they could still make Ozy manufacture any kind of a fake alien invasion causing a catastrophe and it would work fine IMO. But there have been multiple reports of this ending that all match up.

also, if this were to happen then the US would simply be losing the very thing that has been deterring the USSR from attacking all this time. It makes no fucking sense whatsoever.

Just caught the second official TV spot for Watchmen. They go with the "Someone's picking-off costumed heroes" angle this time. Much better than the first advert, I think.

That makes no sense at all if you think about it.
Manhattan could make every single nuke on earth vanish with a thought. He'd never need a hamfisted message like that if he decided war was going to end.

I believe it's actually something like 60% of the USSR's nukes he can destroy

I'm stoked for the movie. Would it ruin it if I read the graphical novel first?

There's never a bad time to read Watchmen. Considering that the movie will inevitably fall short of the novel (no matter how good it is), I would guess that watching the movie first will tarnish your reading of the book.

I don't think so... you'll rack your brains wondering how the hell this would even work as a movie and then you start thinking of the possibilities. I'm more hyped for the movie now than I was before I read it.

There were reports that the new ending was only a misdirection. If Snyder went forward with his plan for the other stuff on an extended DVD, I could see the original ending being in that for the "ultimate" Watchmen experience if the new ending is correct.

But it's not Manhattan doing it. Ozy fakes the message from Manhattan. Manhattan then goes along with it because revealing the truth would do far more damage.

On top of that, as soon as 1 nuke disappears Russia would launch the rest. He's powerful, but he's not God (yet).

Doesn't matter. Even then, folks would still know what he's capable of. It's a very sloppy non solution.
But he's not capable of that. If he was, he would have done it already for the government.

isn't the decision about this movie supposed to be made today? What happened?
The hearing was canceled. Fox and Warner Bros. came to an agreement with lots of love and Watchmen fans get our movie this March.

I think part of the problem with Ozy is they are trying to sell him as being brainy, and in the movie world big and burly and brainiac are nearly mutually exclusive. He has very little time to develop in the comic compared to the other characthers, so the "look" is critical. If you think about it, outside of the murder attempt and the last stanza there is very little room for Ozzy to be developed as the worlds smartest man. In the comics there is the magazine interview that sets him up nicely.

Does anyone else see the love child of Christopher Walken and Jude Law here? Everytime I see him that's all I can think of.... worrying.

My only problem with Ozy is that he looks too young, I know in the comic he maintained his fitness scheme and placed importance on his image, but for someone who should be in their 40s that's pretty optimistic. Maybe Manhttan also helped advancements in facelifts.
