Weekend Confirmed Ep.58 - 04/29/2011 - Christian Spicer gets his user data stolen

I'm loving Garnett's analysis of the PSN situation. He's totally right, and I'm fucking amazed that people are defending Sony at all over this.

It's an absolute mess of a situation and Sony are looking bad whichever way you look at it.

I agree it's an absolute mess of a situation but I don't think we really know enough to say Sony is 100% at fault for this, They deserve to be taken to task for the information gone missing but I don't think it's really known yet if they held the informaiton for longer than they should or once they have specific confirmation what information was stolen than they released it until we get that there's still alot missing that we don't really know.

SF can learn a lot from MK9.

How's that? I don't see other than maybe single player modes that MK9 can teach SF, SF has a better fighting system and if you look at SSF4 has just as good of an online mode.

I disagree with Jeff Cannata when he gave Dragon Age 2 credit for treating a gay relationship exactly the same as a heterosexual one ("To the games credit, there is no reference to your gender, there is no reference to whether or not thats odd").

If the game was truly progressive it wouldn't just ignore any potential issues that could arise from being gay in a medieval-esque society that in all other aspects is filled with bigotry, particularly in relation to class and race.

That's the problem - games don't want to say anything or offend in any manner, so they invent these literal fantasy worlds in which everyone is bisexual and there is no racism or sexism.

I'm cool with that, but I don't know if the complete absence of difference is necessarily a positive.

@ the PSN chatter now and GL is being completely stupid about the PSN "shutdown". Whats not to get? they needed to pull it down to prevent any more intrusions. They didnt say that the hack caused the shutdown, they didn't make that connection.

Its like crazy talk from the worst in the PSN hack thread. And when the others try to present the other side of the argument "THE APOLOGIST TEAM" "YOURE ON THE APOLOGIST TEAM".

and to bring in an"external securtiy team" - he even raged about it like this is a problem?? Maybe these are experts in tracking/identifying the problem? LOL.

Jeff and Christian are both a lot more logical about this.

I think both Jeff and Garnett are right regarding the PSN outage.

Garnett's right that Sony is playing double speak games. They new shit was compromised right away but they intentionaly waited to get confirmation and a more acurate description of the scope of the data breach from a third party before they disclosed it to consumers to give legal and PR more time to craft the vague deceptive statements made.

Jeff's right that it's not as big a deal as people make it out to be. Change your passwords, change your credit card number and you'll encounter no problems. Unauthorised charges on your credit card does suck, but you are not responsable for them and getting the charges reversed is not difficult. The rest of the information was already publicly available for those who really wanted it.

That was the only thing that bothered me--and it really hurt the discussion. Garnett has some very valid points, but drawing battle lines like that and putting someone on one side or the other is totally antithetical to grown-up conversation.

Oh God, forget the basketball talk. How could Garnett butcher his explanation of Omar so badly? Being gay isn't a central part of his character? His motivation for the duration of the damn show stems from him being gay. And he got the entirety of his actions wrong. Money laundering? Drug running? WHAT THE FUCK?!

Please, please, please. If you aren't familiar with something, don't use it as an example.

That boy was beautiful.

I liked the show without the warning, to be completely honest Garnett. I wouldn't mind seeing that segment axed altogether to give you guys more time with games you've been playing and news. Not to say that if something came up that you really wanted to talk about, you wouldn't be able to; I just don't think you should force it every episode. Just my two cents.

spicer suggests outland's mechanic is very similar to ikaruga, jeff does not immediately agree and actually seems not to understand.

Leopards don't change their spots.

Oh, please. There's been topics in Off-Topic where there are videos of people torturing the hell out of animals in slaughterhouses and all people do is blast PETA. Animals are animals. As crimes go, dude paid a ridiculously heavy price for what he actually did.

I didn't know Outland was a metroidvania. Gonna check it out.

we need a remix of Jeff doing the barber lady LOL. Del Rio get into it

Ok dude. You convinced me.

The way I understand it, the hackers caused some of the PSNs outages prior to Sony pulling the plug and that was what they were referring to. As for those comments about Sony needing to pull in 3rd party experts when they should have had them already, that could be a valid point. But, the way I see it, it's a covering their ass move by Sony. Instead of sitting on the issue themselves they brought in "experts" to get to the bottom of it asap.

I'm not an apologist for Sony, but I work in IT and this is pretty normal. I have Cisco certs up the ying-yang but if (and when) I'm confronted with a critical system going down I get Cisco involved. Even if I know what the problem is and know I can fix it in a day, management will invariably ask why didn't I contact Cisco to get it fixed faster. Many times it won't make a difference, but there it is. In Sony's case they don't only have management but class action lawsuits and politicians asking questions.

I see bringing in the experts as preemptive damage control.

Could also be them having to use a third party because the internal engineers found that credit card data might have been compromised and having to do so.

I find that scenario much more believable than Sony being clueless. If this isn't a law already, it should be. A something-something certified company needs to be consulted which is legally obligated to report to the authorities if personal data has been compromised is a much better system than everything being handled by internal teams.

His crime was because of the illegal gambling in addition to the dog killing. He committed numerous crimes.

Eh, I'm not saying Sony was going to see those IPs and do anything nefarious with them, I'm saying it was wrong to go after them. Period. Outside counsel is still Sony. A company shouldn't be given a free pass for whatever their legal team does when they're the ones who brought the lawsuit.

And even if you could argue Sony shouldn't be taken to task for that, it's still a relevant and worthwhile discussion that Garnett (and to be fair, most podcasts) never once touched. If Sony hadn't settled we'd still probably be the only ones discussing it, and that's wrong.

After all, shouldn't Garnett and others have been sticking up for the consumers who make up their very audience? Instead, we got silence.

Nothing happened and nothing would have happened to consumers as a result of Sony wanting to show the geographic distribution of viewers of geohot's youtube videos. It was a non-issue, beat up by people who didn't understand the discovery process, as was explained countless times in the geohot threads.

It's the dumb reasoning that if you rent or buy used games you aren't supporting the company.

Especially renting.

Something tells me if 1D_FTW doesn't care about animals being tortured, he probably cares even less about people making money off animals being tortured.

This is a Fantasy story set on a fictional world that isn't ours. You shouldn't necessarily equate our understanding of medieval culture to the culture of the world Bioware created. It may have the trappings of medieval Earth but it is anything but. While there is bigotry, the world that Dragon Age takes place in may have evolved at an early point to become accustomed to same-sex relationships.

Not sure I fully understood Garnett's opinion on RDR. He wanted more scripted events throughout the world, or something?

He wanted them to be fewer but more meaningful, involved and (hate this word) emergent.

It sounded to me like he wanted the main story line events to occur more around the world rather than letting the player explore the world himself and discover new side missions and areas.

I like the way it is now. It is great to explore (and hunt) a world that isn't just there for a story purpose.

I have to agree with this. Jeff and Christian made some valid theories concerning the shut down and the delay in the notification.

For the Wii vs Hardcore chatter, I love how Garnett didn't understand what Jeff was talking about. Seems like they're on different pages in this ep.

Weird vibe to this show, but Spicer helped far more than he hindered.

I'm all for ditching everything but for 'What'cha Been Playin?' and a few news items. I'd much rather you dudes talk about what you're digging, vs. trying to create a topic live while recording the podcast.

Tighten it up a bit, keep it under an hour, and rediscover your muse.

Along with Giant Bomb, this episode is seriously making me want to try Mortal Kombat, even though I hate fighting games. Goddamn it!

I usually hate fighting games also but mk is really good. I bought it after hearing giantbombs podcast and watching the quicklook. It has returned to form and is absolutely beginner friendly. Not to mention getting your friends together and playing co op or vs is really fun.

Yeah I have to admit I've done a 180 on Spicer. He's a real solid guest.
yeah, i couldnt stand him when they had him to his "standup" garbage, but when he's just a regular guest i actually like him

I've listened to every episode of Weekend Confirmed as well as every episode of 1Up Yours. I'm very familiar and aware of how this show works with the different segments etc. But I have to say lately this show has been so irritating and unnecessarily long that I'm thinking about saying to hell with this podcast. Then this week starting out with the sports talk..... geez. I'd love it if they really shortened Whatcha Been Playing. That segment is way too long winded. Cmon, tell us what your playing with a little info, then move on. Garnett's attempt at humor ("I don't want to talk about games.... lets keep talking about sports" and then always throwing in the sexual innuendoes...) ain't that great. Just this episode as Jeff was talking about DA2, and Garnett throws in his stupid digs at him, he made the comment almost under his breath "It's uh.... hard to have an.... adult conversation I guess". I was agreeing whole heartedly. Don't get me wrong, I love humor, but I'm here for the gaming talk. That's what I really liked about bleahy. No muss no fuss... it's gaming. Then every week, the remixes from the last week.... I'm glad I can fast forward past those. They are getting old and boring.

I know it's my choice to listen or not. I'm just gonna have to use the time stamps they give (which I appreciate) so I can jump to the segments I'm interested in.

I'm not trying to be harsh or negative here, I just wanted to give my opinion and get some of it off my chest.

Yeah his standup stuff wasn't my cup of tea, but for whatever reason, the best WCs are usually the ones where he is a guest.

Garnett needs a foil to keep his shit in check, someone to take the place of Shane or Luke. Right now it's a collection of yes men.

They seemed pretty apathetic towards the wii2. Barely filled 10 minutes when gaf has been running non-stop with the rumors. I can't blame them though, I'm not really feeling it either.

Thinking about it I'm not really excited for E3. I'm sort of interested in the NGP and thats about it. I can't think of a game I'm exicted to see. Maybe Verses 13 or 13-2? Ehhh

I excited for E3 podcasts though. Bombcast has 5 guys now, rumors of a WAHP Cross 8-4 Play are flying around and even the PSNation guys are renting out a theater and selling tickets to a live show

You ready Garnett? I was slightly disappointed in last year's Weekend Confirmed effort. Time to step it up and show these kids why 1UP Yours @ E3 was the definitive set of podcasts each year

Emergent is a perfectly good word that has a specific and appropriate meaning when talking about game design and gameplay. We gotta stop hating words just because people use them a lot. Words that don't mean shit (epic, generic), on the other hand, we can do without.
