Weinsteins pass on CLERKS 3

“[The Weinsteins] passed,” Smith said. “I went in with a $6 million budget and they were like, ‘Oh no, Kevin. This is too high.’ Bob offered us distribution, but they weren’t going to finance it.”

“Clerks II” reportedly cost $5 million to make and grossed $24 million Stateside in wide release.
They don't want to bother with such small amounts.

Smith was completely in the right over the Red State incident. Just shows how petty the ruling class of Hollywood is

Lol remember when Smith made Red State and then retired from filmmaking and then made Tusk and then also was working on this.

wait Tusk actually happened? how bad was it?

What was the Red State incident? And how was Smith right?

Smith basically worshipped the ground the Weinstein's walked on for pretty much giving him his career. They turned down red state so he made his own company even named Harvey boys after the Weinstein's.

He invites them to the first screening of the movie and Harvey is in the back shouting loudly watching football etc. during the first 7 minutes of the movie. So he goes into the back and bluntly says shut the fuck up and that offended the Weinstein's sensibilities and he left.

Last I heard (which was some time ago), Smith WANTED the Weinstein's to pass on Clerks III because then he could personally fund it (or get investors). They would have the right do it legally because the Weinstein's would actually get another chance to buy the film as per the licensing agreement.

The actors, particularly Jeff Anderson (and producer Scott Mosier), did not want to make a movie for the brothers because they weren't paid their promised back-end profits even though the film CLEARLY made money. It was shot for 5M, grossed 27M and had a big life in home sales. Smith's camp actually audited the Weinstein brothers last year.

So, movies probably not dead. Gotta wait till the next Smodcast to hear the full story I'm sure.

It's not out yet.

He's actually making three low-budget campy horror movies in a trilogy he's calling "the true north trilogy". Tusk is done filming, Yoga Hosers is going into production later this year and Moose Jaws is being written.

Don't get the hate Clerks 2 gets, its just as biting as the first one.

Kevin Smith's stuff quality wise is pretty mixed. Clerks 1, Clerks 2, and Chasing Amy, fantastic movies. Chasing Amy being the best movie he made. Dogma was okay. Everything else? Not really feeling it. I also don't like he handled the criticism over Cop Out. A bad movie is a bad movie, issues on set aren't valid for diverting criticism.

thank you weinsteins

The Weinstens make good decisions every now and then.

Best hollywood news in years.

My dawgs.

His movies were pretty revolutionary for their time and opened the gates to a lot of great work, but that's the only way I can view them. Can't stand Kevin Smith.

Well you could just not go see the movie instead of being dicks about it.

Beat me to it. I've never understood this mentality. It's not like he's taking money out of your pockets to make it. Nothing you like will be kept from getting made, and beyond actively seeking out Kevin Smith news, you'll probably never hear much about it unless it turns out to be a surprise smash.

Yeah guys, small fan favorite movies being in the same theaters where remakes and superhero movies get shit out every month would suck so fucking much. Its so much better Clerks 3 never gets made, its influence and Kevin Smith's influence would ruin everything I like. If Clerks 3 was made, every project green lit afterwards would obviously be like Clerks 3, and I hate Kevin Smith.

This is why they passed

I just want to add. Thank you Weinsteins.

A twitter post from 2009, that's pretty damn clever.

I just want to add. Thank you Weinsteins.

Oh, they passed because the dude that's publicly and candidly talked about fucking since '94 talked about fucking his wife in 2009?

I like Kevin Smith...I really do, but we don't really need a 3rd Clerks movie do we?
He seemed really enthusiastic when he first started drafting the script.

I like Kevin Smith enough to want to see him succeed with his passions. I liked both Clerks movies thus far and would've been down for a third since the guy was really into it.

Clerks 3 doesn't come off as a cynical project or cash-grab. I bet Smith legit wants to do it and deliver a great movie to his fans.

Via @Kitties4every1 "Will Clerks 3 still be made?" Heavens yes, just not with the Weinsteins' money. And all involved are okay with this.

There you go

I liked Clerks 2 more then the original. Just wanted to get that out there.

I really enjoyed 2 though I epic trolled some really uptight religious friends into seeing it with me. Moment that Donkey showed up sealed the movie for my enjoyment in trolling

fucking bullshit

IIRC Kevin has a beef going with Weinstein ever since they were screening Red State and Harvey was talking very loudly and checking his phone during the movie and he told him to shut the fuck up

at least according to Smith they havent been talking much after that, which honestly seems like it influenced this decision since 6 mil is a wet fart to the Weinsteins and Clerks 3 would make much more than that

This guys movies are so bad. Every one of them feels like a school project.

A fellow film-school graduate recently asked me to list my top ten favorite films of all time. Chasing Amy made number 7. It's a decently prestigious list too; that movie is brilliant.

Clerks is also easily one of the most impressive directorial debuts I've ever seen.
