Weird Americanisms (UK vs USA thread)

I hope my British friends will be pleased to know I have ordered an electric kettle off Amazon to see what all the fuss is about and to conduct my blind Tea Taste Test.

Here's the one I ordered:

I'm not ordering a Hot Water Bottle though, so you can forget about that.

Well done

Not if you look at this thread for example.

Well, the last 2 pages is either trolling or some startling lack of knowledge from the Americans.

I have been to the US several times, NYC, Seattle, San Diego, Chicago... I wonder how many Americans in this thread have been to the UK, and how many of the ones that have left London...

By any chance, when you were here, did you take in one of our movies where the patrons swing from the chandeliers and have a dance party during the screening?

Did you try the biscuits?

Don't just use it for tea, but for any cooking process which requires hot water.
Pasta?
Just boil up the water in the kettle and pour it into a pot for instant hot water - no waiting for the water in the pot to boil up!

Need to dissolve something for the purpose of baking?
Same thing.

Nope, that whole debate passed me by, I only go to the cinema here when it's quiet, other people can't be relied on to be silent in any country.

Did you try the biscuits?

Yes, but I wasn't in the south so I am not sure how good they were, it seemed the South was where the real good shit was (BBQ for example).

lol british food for the most part is crap sorry if it offends.

It would offend more if you backed up your statement with examples based on experience.

I reel this back to my first post on the subject (as I feel we are getting pissy), US and UK food can be great / crap depending where you go, both country's are multicultural and have a massive amount of choice to the point where it's almost silly to say "british food" or "american food".

The single worst Americanism is.... "I could care less". The weirdest thing about it is that it appears *SO* embedded within American society that it appears in music and multi million dollar films.

Do people just say words without understanding what they're saying? Stupidity at it's finest.

Thats the funniest thing about some of the americans in this thread trying to troll, they don't actually know enough about other countries to do it effectively. Endearing almost.

I'd say a lot of the Brits in this thread have proven they don't know shit about the American customs or behaviors that they're trying to lambast as well. Stupidity transcends national borders.

It's a hallmark of American irony.
It's actually the best Americanism just judging by how enraged it makes foreigners.
I know people who say it that way simply because they know it doesn't make sense, and it's glorious.

You're taking it too seriously, man. And those planes you jumped the puddle with? They go both ways! People have pierced the veil of mystery that is the English motherland.

Just to fuck with people, I say it really sarcastically. "Well, I could care less..." the "but I just don't" is heavily implied. It's fun.

Fair enough. It's more apparent to me when it goes the other way obviously. Think I was entitled to a little snipe after the last couple of pages ;)

Anyway it has been an interesting thread, mostly been a lot more civil than I was expecting.

They fucked with my gf's cooking by default, you are lucky I don't retake Boston with a broken Newcastle Brown bottle and a snooker ball in a sock.

:)

Most people are pretty ignorant of other countries. I'm not saying Americans aren't ignorant, but acting like we have a monopoly on ignorance of other countries because of your anecdotal experience of some time in the states is a bit unfair. The cities you've been in are pretty cool, real America is much different than big cities, obviously. And a lot of the best cuisine is found in the south, IMO.

Newcastle??? And you call yourself British? We drink that shit over here en masse!!

I think we've rubbed off on you a bit too much. Go get you some Fullers!

People do this lol?

American here btw.

Yes, and most likely these people cannot cook (my opinion), like my mother, sister and brothers.

I leave some pot or a kettle on the gas range (when it is off) for water boiling, but I like tea and french pressed coffee.

I shudder at the thought of softening butter in a microwave, just prepare and leave that butter out the night before.

Literally, the only thing my over the gas range microwave is used for these days is to provide light on the gas range, provide heat exhaust for the gas range, reheating of refrigerated left-overs and a clock.

So you're against impromptu baking sessions? I seriously don't get the disdain some of the Brits in this thread have for microwaves. The microwave isn't going to magically change your butter's flavor.

Hell, if I'm really pressed for time I can brown butter in the microwave and it turns out exactly the same as it would if I used a pan.

Congratulations that you have had the means to travel, but have you thought that maybe the reason people haven't traveled is because they can't afford it? Not everything is based on ignorance like you guys seem to believe.
